blowin fuses

I have a 1986 zl600 and it keeps blowing the fan fuse, this in-turn cuts power to everything else.
Anyone know whats going on?

Most Likley a Short[ Probaly on the Frame Somewhere]SORRY I suck at Electrical, Check Everywhere Your Harness Runs along the Frame, Corroded Wires Etc, I would Say thats Your Culprit??, Later Rocky

Cuts power to everything else? Do you mean the bike won't even start? Does the horn work, or turn signals work when it's blown?

Just curious becuse I still have an unsolved electrical issue where I lose everything except the start button, on off switch, and turn signals... I know my fuses arn't blowing but if the fan wire is losing connection on my bike that could be my problem..

If you could post more details it would be much appicated...

This is going to sound really dumb but I dont know where the oil filter is on my ZL. I guess I used to have it serviced in my local bike shop years ago when I used it regularly and I didnt bother to check. I'm here at work thinkin about it and dont recall noticing a filter sticking out anywhere obvious. I'm going to be servicing it myself from now on and this is one thing I haven't got to yet.
Any advice on where this is or even an exploded diagram of the engine...

Thanks,

B

On the 900 its right smack on the botton of the engine. There is a bolt that holds a round plate. The filter is the old type open filter, not the spin on type like cars. You should get new rubber gaskets with the new filter but just in case keep the old ones, plus pay attention to the location of the rubber gaskets so you don't end up with any leaks.

YO dude, Download the service manuals for the basic stuff as it's all here. IF you need copies of them on CD, I can send them to you, but the guys here can send it to you cheaper than I can. Read the manuals and you will have a LOT of the answers you need. If you're NOT mechanically minded then do NOT try to work on your bike as you might just screw other things up trying to fix something.

This is an older bike and doesn't have a lot of the new technology of the newer ones and should be an easier job to do, but you HAVE TO HAVE at least a basic understanding of mechanics. If you can't find the oil filter, then don't try to do a valve adjustment on your bike. Take it to someone that KNOWS what they are doing.

I do NOT mean this as a cut on you but you have to think about things FIRST. Look in the manuals.

Best of luck to you.

Funny you talk about adjusting the valves, a couple of years ago I had a buddy adjust the valves on my bike and for some reason he was making a lot of adjustments on a bike that only had 5K on it. I would like to go through it again this spring and double check it I had good step by step instructions.

Rammy, From what I understand about this and all the other bikes running this motor, it's an engine that does require a valve adjustment more often than some. I would guess it to be on the same order as a volk bug but not quite as bad. 5555 This comes from a mechanic that I know of that is supposed to be a racing mechanic. I'm just sorry I can't get the dude to come down here to help me with mine. He's a few hundred miles from me and I can't push the bugger there. 5555

Thanks for the advice guys, just what I needed.

SD, I do have mechanical knowledge but have not done any maintenance on the ZL before, was too lazy many years ago. Have done major work on alll my cars and 4x4's engines and trannys etc since so I am used to gettin dirty. I was just sittin at work and thinkin about my bike (as ya do...) and realised I need to change the oil and filter before I set about starting up the ol girl after her couple of years sleep. I have been doing the peripheral maintenance the last few days (carbs, calipers, electrical, plugs, filter etc) just hadnt got around to the oil yet... All of my other bikes had the filter out front between the down pipes, I just realised the ZL had no filter there... I do appreciate your input though, thank you for looking out for me.. Thats what this place is real good for...

Blag, you're not the only one that was wondering that. Luckily for me my other half's dad is an ex-mechanic and owns a ZL1000, so I just rang him to ask. First bit of maintenance I've done on the bike myself so far. He's helped me with everything else.

You're correct about the valve adjustment SD, it is required a bit more frequently on this motor. It's not that difficult, just make sure you use two feeler guages, one under each adjuster, or else you'll get the rocker twisted and then you'll be in trouble.
Later,
