Valve spring question for 1986 ZL900

I have bought a set of Kent cams "Fast Road" spec and I was wondering since they have higher lift and duration, can the stock springs handle the revs? Do ZL900's have dual valve springs? I am in the process of purchasing igniter and leads from Holeshhot, 972cc kit from wiseco, full exhaust maybe carbs from a GPZ900 or zx1000(34mm-36mm). Just seeing what the thoughts are from the group.

springs

Yes a zl 900 has dual valve springs, you don't need havier spring
For what about de pistons, you can better use the pistons and cylinders of a gpz1000 or a zl1000
The fit and also have 980cc and are a lot cheaper (used of course)and give the same increase of hp
Wiseco pistons will also give you a higher oil use
A 36mm also fit,but you need the intake gummies of a zl 1000 otherwise they are to little
Don't use the intake gummies of a gpz1000 because the are a slitly differend
If you use higher lift cams you also have to think about the headers, because the are a big restiction(you can open the valves more but the headers are not big enough to get rit of the gasses
Hope you have enough information
Sorry for my english (i am dutch)

Great information

Thank you for yoru information as you cleared up a lot of questions for me. Believe me, your English is better than my Dutch. I will probably stick with the stock carbs, full exhaust, and cams. I will be looking for the 1000 piston kits. Should be a good runner by the time I get it on the road. The data on the carb boots is where I know I would have bought the wrong items.

When i changed out my tensioner and chain last year I installed new valve cover gasket and the seals around the plug wells. I didn't think of it but I should have replaced the rubber bushings under the valve cover bolts. Well it's still leaking and has ruined 2 of my new spark plug caps!

The fix:

I bought 6 10mm washers approx .072" thick and installed them under the valve cover bolts to add extra pressure to the valve cover gaskets. I'll let ya know how this works for me!

Me too

I think I am having an issue like this also. I just changed the plugs and I think that oil is getting into #2. The bike sputters at low speeds but when you twist the throtle it has no problems. Is this an easy fix?

Thanks, Steve

Steve,

If you're doing a valve adjustment get the 5 gaskets and 6 rubber bushings for the valve cover and follow the procudure for the valve clearance adjustment. BTW I think the maintainance interval for this is every 5000 miles. You need to use 2 feeler guages on the rocker your adjusting to keep the rocker from tilting,,,understand?

I use the lower end of the tolerance. By doing so I have more lift and duration than I would using the higher end.

Mark,

I'm in the middle of adjusting my valves and will take your advice. Where do you order your gaskets and bushings from? Bike Bandit has some but I'm a cheapskate and always looking for a lower price. Thanks.

Hey Andy, check your local stealer, it may be cheaper to just pick em up rather than pay the shipping!
