OK..... tank swap idea

Anyone got wiring diagrams?

I need to know which sensor trips the fan and which trips the temp
light.
Also need to know pos. or neg. trip.
ZRX 1200 motor uses only two and I see three on the ZL two on the thermo housing and one on the rad.
I`m guessing the rad. sensor trips the fan as the one on the ZRX trips
the fan but throws a pos.and the ZL has one wire which looks to me like
it throws a neg.
I can always change the polarity with a relay if need be.

Here's the good guff, assuming your ZL’s switch specification and configuration were as per Kawasaki's (as my Aussie model is, numbers in degrees Celsius). Oh, I apologise if I’m trying to teach you how to suck eggs, I may be way off track (i.e. I’m telling you nothing new). At the very least, the following may help others understand the ZL cooling system.

The 1st item in the system is the 110 switch (fan ON) immediately before the thermostat. This is located here because it's where the hot water (i.e. hottest part of the system) rises/flows to before the thermostat opens and if the thermostat is U/S (unserviceable - stuck closed) it will turn the fan on when water reaches this temperature.

The 2nd item is the 97 switch (fan OFF) at the base of the radiator. This is located here because it’s where the water is coolest before heading off to the heater (engine). The 13 degree separation between the specs of the 1st and 2nd switches provides the normal operating range of the cooling system. It also prevents the fan from rapid cycling on/off as it would if it were controlled by a single switch.

The 3rd item is the 120 switch (over temperature light) immediately after the thermostat. This is located here for similar reasons as the 1st 110 switch; however the fan ON switch takes priority over the ‘idiot light’ (being before the possibly stuck closed thermostat).

When you say “Also need to know pos. or neg. trip” I assume you want to know whether they switch on or off (I also assume you know its power is positive to the switch as they close circuit to – ground).

With regards to the ZRX system, advice from my dealer is that the switch on the thermostat operates the light and the switch on the radiator performs the function of both ON and OFF switches for the fan hence the two wires (the fan only cools that which is in the radiator so why sense temperatures elsewhere in the system like the ZL does with the 110 switch before the thermostat).

Am I on restrictions? Sorry, I do carry on sometimes and yes, you're correct, but then again these were 360 words (1,642 characters) and I was trying to tell more than ‘a picture’/diagram, so to speak. In less words this time… :lol:

While your drawing (and mine) describes each switches name and temperature, it doesn't tell us whether each one turns things ON or OFF, nor does it show which side of the thermostat each switch is located (in fact it doesn’t even show the thermostat housing nor that these are fitted to it). The ‘Cooling Fan System Wiring’ schematic in the supplement (18-30) shows which switch turns what ON and Off, but again not where each is physically located in the system.

I didn’t have the ZRX wiring diagram but I did find the cooling system schematic on the net. While the ZRX cooling system diagram shows the single top switch as the 'Water Temperature Switch' it's not clear how the single 'Radiator Fan Switch' functions in lieu of the ZL’s dual switches (i.e. does it turn the fan ON, OFF or both and how many wires come out of it, my dealer says some have a single wire and some have two). I suspected MachIV didn't have access to a live ZRX to confirm these things but I did assume he had the diagrams like I did. Some of us need to see the real thing to fully appreciate these complexities, then the diagrams make a comprehensive understanding.

Hey Rocket, hope you don't feel pissed on - I meant it only general and NOT personal so sorry for the "hard" words :oops: . I only read the question of Mach and found the pic in my folder and coz this diagram is often asked now it's free to be saved on any HD. The more info we can get here the better for everybody as we're at least one big family with same passion...aren't we? :P

just checked the ZRX shop manual and the rad. sensor trips the
fan w/positive(2-wire sensor)
Thermo.housing sensor trips the temp. light.
I can use a relay on the ZL rad. sensor to change the polarity
for the fan.
I`m using the ZRX wiring harness so I wanna keep it as close as I
can.
 
well Today was a good day. but for shits and grins I put a vn750 tank on my Eli........ it wouldnt take a whole lot to mount and I dont think any welding would have to be done but just "sitting" on the bike its a good look. the vulcan tank is a bit bigger and has some nice clean lines oh is off an 86 VN750 Vulcan

LOOKS COOL MATE .ANY IDEA HOW MUCH MORE FUEL IT WILL HOLD??THATS MY PROBLEM,IF YOU THINK YOUR RETURNING POOR MILEAGE PER TANK FULL TRY ADDING A REAR AXLE TWO 16" WHEELS AND A WHOLE LOT OF STEELWORK :D WILL BE LUCKY TO GET 40-50 MILES PER TANK.CAN STILL SWAP FOR LARGER TANK NOTHING IN PAINT YET.ANY ISSUES WITH BARS STRIKING THE TANK???? THANKS ANDY :bom:
 
Hey thanks for the details on the cooling switch layout! that helped. Still I'm not sure which wire on the ZRX's harness should go to the 110 sensor and which to the 97...
The other thing that's bothering me is the two center plugs. the ZRX motor seems to be a little taller and the plug holes, directly under the frame. So what sort of plug spanner (wrench) are you using and did you trim the rubber covering down on the plug caps, or is there an alterative?

Sorry Rocket..but this bit's wrong. The 110 AND 97deg switches BOTH switch the fan both on and off. The 110deg is in circuit when the ignition switch is 'on', and the 97deg is in circuit when the ignition switch is 'off' allowing the 'run on' of the fan after ignition switch off. They are 'single point' temperature sensors and the differential between switch on and switch off is acheived by nature of the fact that the system full of water will take quite a while to cool, this is what prevents rapid cycling on/off.

To answer Mach's question about pos/neg trip the sensors on the ZL are a negative switch ie when the temperature is reached the resistance goes low and connects the negative side of the relays to earth (ground), thereby switching the fan on.

Thanks for clearing that up. Now all I need to know is which wire switches the fan on and which switces it off. Unfortunatly I don't have a manual. Does it say which is which where it describes how to test the sensor? Or have they not written such a test?

Ok I guess I have to accsept "Dork of the year award" for not having read this post through...

Still thanks Kawasaki-Krazy. However I'm still stuck on the problem with the two middle Spark plug shafts.
Do I trim the plug caps down or is there an alternative?
And changing the plugs. On the Eli the shaft are so tight that the only alternative to the original plug spanner is a home made box spanner. So with the frame directly over the shafts and the ZRX motor seems a little taller, what are you guys using?
