Please Help - Oil Leak

Exhaust leak

I just noticed air comming out of the exhaust pipe right where the muffler clamps on the the pipe. I tried tightening the clamp but i didnt want to over tighten. So i got underneath and looked. I see there is like a little slit with a hole, right next to where the clamp is. Should i move the clamp over that hole where the air is coming out? Or does the leak not hinder performance and just leave well enough alone? Thanks

hey TCH;

If the carbon gasket, that slides over the muffler pipe is in good shape and if the muffler is slide into the "Power box" all the way, then you shouldn't have a leak or see a hole.
I replaced mine muffler gaskets last fall. About five bucks each. Well worth the ching.
Actually I replaced all of the exhaust gaskets. It took about four hr.s.

Starting at the head pipes, rmoving the radiator, and making my way back to the mufflers.
Don't forget to use Lock tite on the threads during reassembly. :D

I also just noticed there are tiny holes in the bottom of both of my pipes. Is that normal or were they drilled? Thanks

Hey TCH, The Tiny holes on the Bottom are meant to drain away any Moisture Build up in the Mufflers, I presume theese are the ones you are Talking about????, Later Rocky :twisted:

Make sure every now and then that you clean out those drain holes. A simple 2 second job that can save you megabucks!!! Trust me, I know :lol:

What do you mean clean them out? How? Use like a pipe cleaner thing? (the bendable thing that has little brissles?
 
Just use a small object to make sure that any debris has been removed. A small screwdriver or similar to prod the holes clear will do the trick

Hey Gang,

I just fired up my ZL and have a problem. I have a pesky oil leak by the water pump, that I can not pin point. Instead of guessing which gasket is the culprit. I would like to replace all the gaskets around the water pump area.

Has anyone had this problem? What gaskets do you guys recommend I should order/buy to cure this leak?

Thanks for any info you can supply.

I'm still going through this problem. The cure for me will be a water pump. I tried replacing the o-ring and the inner seal(12x28??TC), but the shaft must be worn. still leaking. Also when i had the pump out i noticed corrosion around the sealing surface on the pump cover, so another reason to replace the pump.

TIP:
For finding oil leaks. Clean area, spray with desenex foot powder, run bike and look for leaks. Foot powder makes it easy to see them. Also easy to clean-up. Courtesy of Krayz1
 
My ZL is also leaking oil at the moment. But it appears to be around the oil drain plug. Thats what I get for not using the Torq wrench when I changed the oil.

So I will make sure its tight and then go from there.
 
i have notice the same on my bike seems to be getting worse

discouraged to hear from zlmark that a gasket swap didnt cure the problem.,but at least he was man enough not to try and blame desenex.
 
I can get all the o-rings and seals for the water pump if someone wants them.
I'll have to search for the info again but I know where to get them and they're not pricey.
 
The foot powder sounds like a good idea, I will try.

I think I will start by replacing the o-ring and inner seal (if I can find)?

If not, I sure could use your help Snake, to locate the parts for the water pump.

It is not the o-ring that causes the problem but the seal
A complete set for the waterpump is for sale on Ebay
(seal and o-rings) for a few dollars

I've noticed a niggly oil leak from a similar place, from just below the water pump, it's slowly been getting worse, not much, just a drop or two after I've gone for a ride, I thought it was the oil sender unit first off as it was a bit loose, so I tightened it up, but it's coming from higher up, but by reading this thread, I now know where it is coming from.

I asked my local bike shop about it and they reckon I shouldn't worry too much until I've got oil floating in the coolant!!!! so I promptly got a water pump gasket kit on order (about $40.00AUD at another bike shop), but is it very difficult to swap them over myself?

I'm not much of a bike mechanic, just the normal oil services, filters and plug changes are my forte, plus I don't have many tools, so would it be better to get my local Kawasaki dealer workshop to do it?

Pity we don't live closer, i'de give you a hand Mick. I haven't had this problem yet but i've been thinking about fitting an electric water pump, they make them to fit most cars so i'm sure i'll find one small enough to fit a bike, that way i can blank off the original pump hole, preventing future leaks and gain horsepower to boot :good luck:
 
Oh, I don't know panther, the Sunshine Coast, QLD isn't that far away, only a couple of hours drive, we go to Toowoomba from Inverell all the time (it's the closest decent clothes shopping centre for the missus). I'll have to meet up with ya one day and say g'day, maybe even organise to go for a blat up into the Hinterland, eh? I've never been there, but I've heard it's got some great bike roads.

Anyway, I had a more investigative look for the oil leak after my last post and the leak seemed to be coming from where the water pump mounts onto the side of the engine block, as there was a fresh oil run, so there has to be a gasket starting to breakdown around there somewhere, the water pump itself isn't leaking, but I did check the water pump bolts for tension and one of them, the one that also has a soft metal, plastic coated, flat strip type, electrical wiring retainer for the oil sender lead, didn't have much tension on it at all, actually I undid the bolt with my fingers, anyway, when I pulled the bolt from the water pump housing, I noticed the bolt threads were coated with clean, wet oil. While I was cleaning the bolt, I noticed a solitary drip of clean oil come from inside of the bolt hole, so the gasket must be weeping from inside the bolt hole as well.

Hopefully, cleaning and retensioning the bolt there may tighten the gasket back up and fix the oil leak problem.

If it pops up again, I'll just get the local Kawasaki dealer workshop to replace the gasket, that way too, I'll get the work guaranteed.
