ZL 600 Jetting and Mods(I finally got it right!)

Hey, guys! Just wanted to drop everobody a line and relate how y'all(yeah, I'm in Georgia!) have helped me IMMENSLEY in getting my "96 600 straighted out---

Took off the #@%$#% airbox and accompaning junk, and went to UNI socks and a Dynojet stage 3 kit. I'm running Cobra F1R's, and had a plug(!) that stripped out, so re-threaded/Helicoiled all four cylinders for 14mm plugs, now running NGK B8ES's. When I first started the beast with the origional setting as directed by Dynojet, the bike ran good---for about a mile, then just quit running! Classic rich syndromes-wouldn't accelerate, blowing black smoke, wouldn't idle, and stalled/wouldn't start. After pushing the beast home...Next day, changed some stuff! I used a combination of info from about EVERY post that had to do with 600's or carbs, and here's what I came up with---

Needle circlip in groove #3-
130 main jet-
2 turns out on the idle mix screw-

Got it to run WITHOUT the filters on it, but put them on...nothing past 3k revs. Sooo... went another 1/2 turn in on the pilot air screw, and checked the installation of the filters, and...OMG, it idles! It runs! And...it RUNS like a molested primate! Now, I see what you guys have been talking about!
Revs to redline in each gear, just a little fussy down at the bottom, but other than that...WOW!!! What a difference! I put a filter on the end of the head breather, along with about 6 inches of hose, so I would maintain vacuam at the valve, to keep the vacuum on the petcock for adaquete fuel. Used a Mr. Gasket oil breather for this, as it was kinda large, and could create kind of a venturi effect. I mounted it behind the right side cover, so it's in the airstream. I'm setting this up for the AMA/Prostar BikeWeek Nationals, at Valdosta this weekend, so I also put about 8 inches of hose on the crankcase vent, and ran it into the empty air filter cavity, with a filter on the end, sitting in a cut-off plastic bottle/catchcan, in case of "catistrophic failure"!(Per the Rulebook!)(OK, I'll admit it...The UNI sock filter were not fitting at all, so I cut them down and bought some rubber 2"-1 1/2" neck-down adapters at Lowe's, and put a course piece of foam UNDER the sock...and found it was CHOCKING off the airflow, so I took out the coarse foam, and it all cleared up! The adapters are 50mm at the 1 1/2" side, so they fit REAL well over the carb inlet! Hose-clamped on, and I got a filter!) This has been an odyssey that's coverd the last three months, since the end of the drag race season(for me) in November, when the carbs grunged up, and I decided to do away with the airbox. I REALLY could NOT have done this without out the help of articles from---ANY of you guys that posted ANY info on ZL600's on this site--believe me, I"ve been through all the posts, and there is a wealth of info---I must have used a piece of everything that's here---including some info on the 900's and 1000's that was at least a guide as to what I could do and where I could go with this thing, especially in the wee dark hours, when I was THIS CLOSE to putting a bullet between the beast's eyes, and leaving it to rot! A great big THANKS!!! to all of ya, now I can concentrate on racing, and stop dirtying up my wife's kitchen sink with gasoline and carb cleaner!(LOL!) Wish me luck, guys, I hope to do us proud, and mabye I'll see ya at the races! Take Care, God Bless, and......

ELIMINATORS ROCK!!!!!!!!

Right on, glad to hear yyou have it all worked out, i hope to be posting some news on mine in 2 weeks, i'm getting anxiuos!!

Be sure to let us know how you make out this weekend.

Post some pics if you can...

Good Luck!!!

Yeah it takes some fiddling around here and there to get it right.

I did all the jetting and removing the airbox. Put in new plugs, new wires, and inline filter and new fuel line.

And damn if I didn't use a too flimsy fuel hose. It pinched and I had no tools to get to it under the tank when I took it out for a test run.

The 600 is not a light bike pushing it uphill in riding boots.

But she screams. Now I just need to replace the starter. Got one just gotta get the time before it warms up. Remove the old install the rebuilt then rebuild the old.

Yeah, I know what you mean aboout pushing these things! Ran out of gas once, at 3 AM, on the Interstate, 5(!)miles from the nearest exit/gas station! NOT an experience I want to repeat, at least in this lifetime!

Yahoo and google searches bring us up first in the zl owners search. we are beating the zl camaro and vettes out now.
:dancingfool:

oops, forgot tough guys don't dance :rotf:

Is there any way you can post a few pictures of your project for me. I'm currently in the middle of removing the box and installing a stage 3 jet kit. I would love to see what you came up with. From what I'm understanding you didn't put your filters directly on the carbs but made extensions for the filters? Thanks!!

If you get the correct size filters for the carbs you will not need extensions.

I already gave them a go once. Direct bolt on, we just rebuilt the carbs, took a torch file to the jets and all the small holes (not families with the technical names). I noticed a considerable difference in power but it's bogging at 6k rpm. That's when I desired to go to the stage 3. I have not ordered it yet, but will in the next week or two. I was going to try to fiddle with adjustments this weekend to see if I could make it rich enough to use the filters. As of right now I have a pop in the exhaust in between shifts. If I recall that means it's lean as is with the box still on.

Are you running stock jet size or something different? Without the correct size jetting you will stumble at higher rpm. What exhaust, stock or aftermarket?
