1. Guest,
We need good tech writers that are willing to help out here at ZL-OA. If you like taking photos of jobs as you perform the steps on your repairs, have historical ads/documents from old magazines, or any else you think belongs in the Technical Library than you might be able to help. Send a private message to Furchin, Mudrunner88, Chris, Jarney, Wuputt, or Markus56 and we can lead you in the right direction to get started.

Today I emailed a Kawasaki Specialist in the UK and asked him about spares and what was used and if so what was on other machines in the range between the years the ZL's were manufactured and if so what was the compatibility of parts and resources!

So although I find the site, a little confusing, for Basic Information, (Spec's and History), I do not doubt a lot of work has been put into the site's interface, but, for those in the know, what is the compatibility of parts with other models and what is the availability of parts, (NEW) across the board, so to speak?

And can Kawasaki Japan be connected direct over this issue?

    Many thanks

    John H

You probably won't get a worthwhile answer from either as they just don't have that sort of information.

I am trying to work on a list of parts that I have used and did suggest a couple of weeks ago that anyone that has used an alternative part put it up under a a thread.

Engine wise, there are mutiple other models that are fully compatible and so are most of the electrics. It's just those little bits that are causing problems. There is a current thread about throttle cable that I hope will resolve what we can use as no one seems to make them for a ZL.

As previously mentioned, engine wise we are in a fairly good position.
Parts from Gpz900, Gpz1000, Gpz1100 Water cooled ones, Zrx1100, ZZR1100 can be used (some need mods).
Other parts can be a lot harder to source!

Parts for the bigger machines are not applicable to me.
I am particularly concerned about the smaller 4's, I have a 398cc bike and it's the 400ccc and the 600cc engines that are applicable to me at the moment, most of the "grey" imports, from the Japanese "Home Market", that came into the UK are in this class as well as 465 (?), twin!

What about rear shocks and exhaust and silencer systems?

Everything is cheaper in the "States and I believe that Kawasaki built some Eliminators there, but probably most were the 900cc and 1000cc machines at a guess, as your "Home market could better support them!

As far as I know all Kaws sold in the US were imported. Model-wise Europeans had a lot of bikes that were never sold here. Mainly because EPA certification is time consuming and costly.

Big CC Kaws were made in Lincoln starting in '78 with the Vetter KZ1000. Our Eliminators were born in Lincoln.

C'mon boys, give ZLrider a break. I read it somewhere in an article I now cannot find, about USA production, but what about the other bikes, that is not the 1000 and 900, any idea where they were produced!

I don't think we have on the site what you are referring to. At one time a member was working on a list of discontinued parts or superseded part numbers. If you know what part you are interested in you could use a parts site like Partzilla to find the part and they would list all compatible bikes in which the part was used. Some of us have a Kawasaki parts reference CD that does the same thing. I don't know if it is still available but it was from Zedder Enterprises and sold on ebay.

I'm trying to put a list of parts that can be used as substitutes but want to have each confirmed and tested before I make a mistake and cost people money.

Thank you, the ZL 600, I just picked up is listed on the Log Book as an 1986, Chasis Number JKAZLA16GA004033. The most obvious missing parts are the headlight and original Speedo/ Revcounter mounting. The Speedo and rev counter are there, so I will need some pictures of an original ZL600A, it also has engine damage, the Ebay seller failed to mention in detail, the barrels may/will possibly need a rebore and the head may need a new valve set, but haven't had chance to look at it yet, or check that the engine and frame numbers match! The exhaust system is off the later model and not like the Baloney sausage type it should have, like on my ZL400A the price was good though, so it a case of a complete restoration, the colour has been changes from Red to Blue! However, it will be exactly like the $00A except where mine is Black/Blue-Grey and Gold pinstripe, I may have this one Black/Red and Gold pinstripe or replace the red with amber like on the early Triumph Tridents so colour schemes combinations, work well and better than others!

Perhaps it would be wise to separate out the posts for the Eliminator 4's into Big 4's 750cc & up and Little 4's 600/400 and then twins 450/465cc?
Spare lists likewise with compatibility in a cross-referenced section!
