Got Tank painted need cap rubber

Hey I got my tank painted on my ZL9 and the rubber around the filp up cap got destroyed. Anyone know where to get it? The local Kaw dealer told me that to get it I would have to buy the whole cap.... $400+

Help :!:

trim

You can also use automotive trim. It works pretty decent and looks fine. You can get strips of it from your local automotive shop or go to an upholstery shop. It comes in balck or chrome at the automotive places. Unfortunately it's not long enough to go all the way around so you'll need two pieces of it. I think it comes 2 or 3 strips to a package. Later.

Finding a gas cap cover on Ebay isn't the answer to finding the surround rubber, for a cap that you just spent time and maybe big $$ to get painted, unless you are looking to try and remove another used one!!

For anyone trying to do a repaint, you can try 3M adhesive remover. You will have to soak it for a while, then carefull as you peel off the seal.

Bigger issue, is trying to get the seal glued back on STRAIGHT!! Either way, it is a labor intense project, especially if you are trying not to tape lines next to the seal!

Good Luck!

new tires fitted (love that expression), carb sync, de-smog, fresh air, fresh plugs, flush and fill brakes- clutch.

Stealer charged me 200 plus to mount front and rear . I knew they were high, but damn. Tacked on a 30 charge per tire since i bought them elswhere.

would be halfway to paying for that tire changer i was looking at.

the carb sync was easy.if you havnt done it , try. If i can anybody can.

number 1 spark plug was rusty. eeeeeewwwww.
frame rails complicate swap (plugs) a bit.

new fuel line and inline filter.. I hate short tubes.

de- smog was a snap. just good to get that extra junk out of the way. bought caps from z1 enterprises.(carb)

made cap at valve cover like vin said.
remove, invert butterfly valve, replace pointing rear.

cut off tubes except for grommet portion at smog port valve cover.
took a 1/2 lag bolt, shortened to 1.25" w/ sawzall, pressed into grommeted smog-thing from valve cover w/ a 6" C-clamp, re-install: bingo.
feel like a selected contestant on the price is right.Ding ding ding ding ding....

lessons learned....
easy on the oil on that oil filter. I was sparing and it still looked like a skillet frying sausage in my airbox.

you get pretty good at taking off the tank and putting it back on as a novice paying his dues ( love the fuel gauge clip the most)

I am slowly learning some skills. i am not a natural wrench.

the fluid swap in brakes/clutch was simple. i finally read it where i understood.

take the cylinder covers off (means use the right size screwdriver) mine were so tight I tapped the phillips w/ another large
handle, then clamped vise-grips at a right angle to the driver .
I could see the torsion , laying into reverse, and honestly thought the screwdiver might snap.
the snap was the cylinder screws letting go.

I put tubes down on the nipples, left caliper 1st, using an actual 10mm box wrech and not ,say, needle nose plyers or toenail clippers...
carefull there , remove the cover.
pump the lever gently, as the juice flies into a pan (like when we were lads) just add new fluid intermittently to keep the cylinder swimming and keep out the air. soon all the Reagan era fluid is gone, and we glint as brightly as the end of the clinton years. (I'd a let her blow me too, u know hillary wasnt gettin' on that thing)

well I'll ramble more in the darkness later,
but the story ends with a zl1000 pulling a fatboy(me) down the road like a mule w/ a poker shoved up it's ass

Alright! Sounds like your headed down the right path,, thanks for the entertainment :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:
