1. Guest,
We need good tech writers that are willing to help out here at ZL-OA. If you like taking photos of jobs as you perform the steps on your repairs, have historical ads/documents from old magazines, or any else you think belongs in the Technical Library than you might be able to help. Send a private message to Furchin, Mudrunner88, Chris, Jarney, Wuputt, or Markus56 and we can lead you in the right direction to get started.

The starter clutch seems to be the Achille's Heel of the Eliminator 900.

And it looks like to be a pain in the neck to repair.

But how often does this failure happens??

My bike is 69000 km, I don't know if previous owners did it. I hope I'll never have to... ;)

:hello: The 900 is prone to starter clutch failure. I know of 3 that has gone bad. The ZL 1000 was up graded by KAW. To change one the cases need to be split. You would have to order one from the ZL 10.

:hello: Good 2 cents. :notworthy:. What's 2 cents = to German. :laughing7:. I bookmarked this on my deak top. The starter clutch from the connie will also work. It may be the same part # as the ZL 10.

(Just) my 2 cents means in German 'hier noch meine Meinung dazu' equal to IMHO but only @ the beginning or the end of a sentence; as you can see @ the end of the repair text the ZZR 1100/1200 starter clutch will fit as well, I bought 2 in the bay for 40€ (~$US 49) each incl. the idler wheel...next winter job on my ZL&GPZ. :laughing7:

Here's a pic of the ZZR starter clutch I bought which is different in construction to ZL900 and GPZ 900R:

:hello: Are they OEM used or new. Are they the same O. D/I. D. & same amount of teeth on the gears.

The parts are good used ones; a member of my preferred 900R-page has changed his starter clutch w/ this one on his GPZ, but you have to replace as well this idler wheel - the orig. one will not fit like he told me. Normally you get it as a set when seller is fair to you.:laughing7:

:hello: I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable doing all that work & using used parts.

The ZZR-parts are built so strong, they will survive the bike:laughing7:. I'll do as well the starter chain upgrade.

:hello: 10 4 on that. :notworthy:. I have all the connie parts for the 6 row chain up grade except for the starter chain gear shaft. Last month I ordered one from parzilla & they told me that it is on back order from KAW with no ETA time. I just hope that it won't be discontinued. I've been looking for a used one with no luck. So what all parts do you need. Are bearings different than our ZL 9/10. Parts marked in BLUE A. https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawasaki/motorcycle/2004/zrx1200r-zr1200-a4/balancer IMG_6048.JPG

I reserched the starter chain gear shaft. They are the same part # for the following bikes. ZL 9/10, GPZ/ZX 9/10/11, ZG 10, ZX 1200 all years. No need to order one when going to the 6 row starter chain up grade.

:hello:Not for ZL/ZX9, they have 12046-1068 instead of 12046-1083 so I have to change all parts concerning the wider chain...
