new tire

When the dealership puts on a new tire, do they have to drain all the gear lube and put new stuff in? I am jsut curious because i use synthetic and want to change it back if they fill it back up with normal fluid.

New Tire..........

Hi.

Normally not. You don't have to drain off the Oil for replace the Tire. And if You are doing that , it should always be with Hypoid Oil acc. to specification.

No Gear Oil , No Motor Oil !!!!

I use mobil 1 sythetic gear lube 75w-90. I was told it is okay to use and people on here use it. Or should i not use it?

New Tire..........

Hi.

Can't say it dosn't work. I have been told nothing else but the Hypoid Oil. But if You had a good experience with the sythetic gear lube, it can't be so different.

But , it's not necessary with dismount the final drive for new tire. Only if You have some extended wheels/tires on, it could be necessary.

Have a nice weekend

Here's a thought,
why waste your money on the expensive oil? It really is a false economy (in my view). The manufacturers specification is quite adequate, thats why they specify it. Just think of the additional money you're spending on the synthetic oils (and each time you replace it) and compare those costs with the additional life you might get out of the final drive. Really, has anyone blown a rear end attributed solely to the manufacturers spec oil (perhaps over extended intervals would be more likely the cause), for that matter, has anyone blown a final drive?

Just a thought...

gear oil

Hey Tchfall15,
In no way should the dealer be replacing the gear oil in order to change the rear tire. The gear oil in the differential has nothing to do with droping the rear and changing it. This is a straight forward operation and easy to do. Don't let 'em hornswagle you into something you don't need.
Furchin

Horn what?

Ah furchin;

I don't know anyone else with such a confident comand of the English language.
Here in Canada, we spell Hornswogle with a "silent" O. :D

More to the point, You and Rocket are correct. No need to chage any fluids for a rear tire swap and manufacturers recommended lub.s should be fine.
Don't forget though. Things in the lubricant world have chaged quite a bit since the manual was printed in 1985.

hornswagle, hornswogle, neither is correct

Bbond2000,
I admit my mistake in the spelling of the word meaning to trick or cheat. But alas we are both wrong. The correct spelling is HORNSWOGGLE. And to rib someone from the great white north it's command with two M's  Enjoy your day. Furchin

Anyone try a 200/70-15 on the rear?
I`ve been told by a friend it will fit.

New Tire..........

Hi.

Yes , You can put on the Metzeler ME880 , 200/70x15.It will fit your ZL900.

But it has to be installed not inflated !!!

:x !@#$%^&
Well now I know for next time, just put on a brand new 170. Even deflated I thought it was a bit snug. How long does it take to wear out a Dunlop 404?? :?:

Hey MACH, The 200 will Fit but it wont "Fill out" Properly because of the Rim Size and will look about the Same as a 170 or 180, Later Rocky

mr4spd69
I also just fitted a Dunlop 404 (160/80-15), it was a toss up between that or a Bridgestone G702 Exedra. My local dealer refused to get a Bridgestone for me ‘cause their sales rep is a problem child, didn’t matter how much extra money I was prepared to throw at ‘em. Anyway, so far I'm wrapped about the traction of the Dunlop but its still early days to gauge the wear factor.

WRT the wider tyres, I'd be careful to ensure the manufacturer recommends your choice for your rim size. I suspect your insurance company (if you have a policy) would look for any excuse to refuse a claim should you come off (bike damage and/or personal injury). Of course the choice is yours, but I (we) care…

I recently fitted a Metzeler ME880, 170/80-15 to the rear of my ZL1000.
Have been happy with it so far but about a week ago I came home from a quick blast up a local "hill" near here and noticed a bunch of "localised" small cracks had appeared in the tread.

Have a look at: http://www.alphalink.com.au/~birdrock/ME880.htm

Anyone here got any ideas what has caused these, anyone seen anything like this before, is it "safe" to keep using this tyre??

I'll go back to the place that fitted it and ask them to, but am interested to hear your views.

tires

Rossco1, I too had a tire that developed cracks similer to what you show. Although mine were closer to the rim and not as clustered as yours. Mine seemed to run parallel to the rim. I asked my neighbor, who owns a Yamadog dealership about safety. His response was to change the tire. Reason being, this wheel supports a tubeless tire and you have no way of knowing when or if the tire will give out. If the tire had an innertube within it you would be safer by having backup support. In the interest of safety I changed the tire. The tire in question was an Avon, supposed to be a real good tire. It had around 2000 miles on it and was about 2 years old. I went with a Maxxis Classic tire and am real pleased with it. The cost in the USA is real cheap compared to other brands. Furchin

Furchin, what size tire did you mount up and where did you get it from. Side note, I got the hold of him and he is shipping it to me. Thanks a ton! Matty

Furchin, thanks for your reply.

I've been in contact with the Aussie importer/distributor for Metzelers and they've been in contact with the shop that sold me the tyre.

I went back to the shop where I bought the tyre today and they replaced the it for me no charge with the view to sending the tyre back to Metzeler for analysis. They're going to keep me informed of what they find.

Both parties were not able to give any concrete explanation for the cracks at this stage but agreed that it certainly shouldn't have happened.

The coding on the side of the tyre tells that it was made in July last year, (2804 = 28th week, 2004), so it wasn't as if it was old stock and had been sitting around getting hard/going "off" or similar.

Will post any info/feedback I get from either party.

tire size

MrMatt, the tire size that I mounted was 170/80-15. It is a Maxxis Classic. Cost me $73.00 plus shipping. It was bought from Discount Motorcycle tire & accessories in Arvada, Colorado. I have heard that they are no longer in business. Must be true 'cause I had them in my favorites and can no longer bring their web site up. Anyway I'm sure there are other sites or companies that sell this tire. If I come up with a good one I will let you know in some way. Ask Knightkadosh about this tire and how it looks, I'm sure he'll give it a favorable review. At least he did when we went riding. Later, Furchin

Cracked but not broken

Well Rossco;

I took a look at your pic.s.
The symptoms you are talking about I have seen on racing tires after they have been used for a race or two.
I'm told it is caused by the excessive heat on the asphalt of the race track, combined with the abuse of excessive sliding, creating enough heat to literally cook the rubber compouund of the tire.
We here in Atlantic Canada don't get heat like that here often but, I understand this is quite common in the midwest US, Florida and Cali.
I might be totally wrong but that seems to be the expanation.
Hope it helps.
