zl600 carbs

Hi small problem here, just taken the carbs off to replace the throttle screw stop assembly. I think i put everything back as before, pipes and linkages BUT the bike runs ok until you put some rev`s on it gets to about 4-5,000 rpm and then promptly drops out. As i haven`t changed anything else i am assuming it is something to do with the carbs, Does anyone have any ideas where i could have gone wrong?

Did you take the carbs apart while you had them out? Mine did the same thing after paying a dealership to clean them. Found out they pinched the diaphram on one of the carbs when they put it back together so the slider would only go up so far causing what I called a flat spot at 5K.

No i never took the carbs apart. I did wonder about the diaphrams ,i noticed that the slides don`t move when the throttle is turned just the butterflys. Is this because the slides work on vacum from the engine?

Yes but they should move and have a little resistance to them, the slides if they move to freely you may have vacumn issues. Take the carbs apart and REALLY CLEAN THEM.

Adjust the tabs on the floats CAREFULLY just a hair. Check the float valves they shoud be pointy as a missle they should not have a step at the end of the cone. Check for dirt and debris.

I changes my fuel line and used 3/8 inch car hose reinforced to keep from pinches. Added an inline filter from Purolator clear plastic and about 3 bucks at Advanced auto. keep the carbs clean and you can see the fuel rushing or not through the plastic.

CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN those carbs.

At about 60MPH my tach needle starts to fluctuate by a couple of hundred RPM and gets worse the faster I go, by the time I get to about 90 it bounces around really bad. Is this an indication that I need a new tach or something completely different.

This seems pretty common. Mine bounces quite a bit in the upper ranges. There was a post on KERA iirc, where someone took a tach apart and found one of the hairsprings broken. The bad news is that I don't see a way to take to take it apart with destroying it. I'm keeping my eyes open for a swap from another bike, but most use mechanical tachs.

MAKE BE NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR PROBLEM BUT I ONCE HAD A BLACKBIRD THAT DID THE SAME OR SIMILAR AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE MY VOLTAGE REGULATOR( REGULATOR/RECTIFIER)MAY BE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BEING A HONDA BUT THE TELL TALE SIGN WAS THE DEAD BATTERY AFTER A WHILE ONCE IT GAVE UP COMPLETELY. GOOD LUCK ANDY :pale:

Me thinks that was my post:\

Well maybe not, I've had this done to mine (for the same reason) and you can't see any evidence when it's refitted. Its a **** job but the pro's do it the same way, mechanical method of prising the bezel open bit by bit (carefully so as not to tear the edges) until it is able to be lifted from the body. When you put it back together just reverse the operation and the rubber anti-vibration ring should hide all the evidence.

Please don't destroy the bezel, if you do tell us all where you find a replacement (we'll wait, honest).

Hey Rocket

When I click on the link you posted WITHIN your link, all I get is

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: message_die() in /home/elim/public_html/db/db.php on line 88

Yeh, sorry I didn't check first, I just found this one and dumped it into ZL-OA. It seems the link has been broken due to maintenance or some other issue with the site.

It's unfortunate, I have more than 330 of my own posts invested in KERA (fourth top poster http://www.eliminator-us.org/kforums/memberlist.php) and we are now running the risk of losing it all (a total of 6760 articles).

Are you asking me to go hunting for it?

No not at all. :nonono:

This is a job I've been putting off on mine for quite some time. I knew someone had described how to do it but I couldn't find the post. I guess I'll just have to go careful.

I know what you mean. Kinda makes you think we should take individual back-ups of what we post eh?

I know what you are saying here. I belong to the venture riders site and that site is large and has some seriuos traffic. well about a year ago they had a crash and the database backups were corrupted, lost everything. Had to start from scratch. Luckily alot of the tech stuff had been saved by members who either submitted them or others who saved it just for reference. So if you read some thing here that ya really like then it might be a good idea to copy it into a txt file and start your own little library. I do a weekly backup myself and the hosting has daily backups. I'd like to think we have all the bases covered here but ya never know.

Sorry Rocket, too lazy to look over there this morning. Like to give credit where due.

That being said, the way the gauge was designed, they were not meant to be taken apart but that doesn't mean they can't be. I repair aircraft instruments and I'm sure I can fix it, but I guess my coconuts are not big enough to risk wrecking a semi-functional gauge. If anyone has a dead gauge they would be willing to donate or sell, I will take a crack at it.

I am watching this post, my tach starts bouncing at 4500 but stabilizes at 5000, might just be the start of what you are seeing. It has been doing it for three years now so I am not too worried about it!

I hadn't notices it before but since reading this post a few days ago, I have noticed my speedo needle jumps/wobbles a bit up around 100 - 120kmh. its fine at speeds under and over that, but in that narrow speed band, i got a wobble... I wonder would it be a similar problem to the tacho needle wobble ye're talking about here....

bounching tacho

Hello
I also have that problem BUT i don't have the the original meter ANYMORE
The original meter also bounched round the 5000 rpm .after a year i mounted a mini tacho from louis in Germany
www.louis.de
The minitacho also bounches around the 5000 .I have the bike 5 years and it always did that
I think that the CDI unit is the problem and not the tacho itself
So before you all open your tacho I hope you are sure that it is your meter and not somthing else
I am very intrested in the solution

Actually I can grab the tach with my hand and it will settle down. It used to be worse when I first got the bike. After adjusting the valves, sync'ing the carbs, new tach housing gaskets, it's a little better but gets pretty shaky after about 8K RPM's.

Speaking of Tachs, mine is loose in the housing. The screws on the back of the housing are tights but I can pull the bezel out of the housing about an 1/8 of an inch. Its never been worked on or replace, maybe try shorter screws or add some small washers?

I had the same problem rammy, I ground down some tiny washers and cured the problem.
