K&N Filter Question

Is the airflow thru the individual K&N pod filters that much better than the replacement filter for the stock airbox? I am contemplating which way to go and would appreciate any input anyone might have. :?:

Yes, And as a result of the much higher airflow you will need to get a jet kit and use the stage 3 jets which are much larger than stock. Nice HP gain you can really feel as well!

Can I get directions?

What would be really nice is, to find some way to direct the air into the K&N pods more efficiently. Sitting directly behind the engine, like they do, the carbs suck mostly, hot turbulent air. The chrome side covers, kinda of funnel some of the surrounding air into the air chamber of the stock box.
I have fiddled around with trying to maximize air flow using the stock air box. I notice that anyone who is usung the K&N pods have removed the side covers. I'm not sure if that's out of necessity or just for looks. I know Rocky, "TheEliminutter", uses pods, and has also removed the side covers.
Today, every sportbike on the market uses some version of "Ram Air" funneling.
Way back in 1985, the Eliminators nemisis, The "V Max" used ram air side pods, which remain unchanged 20 years later.
That's my nickels worth. :D

The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same

Too bad Kawasaki wouldn't have taken a lesson from Yamaha on this one. I'd like to see a . . .
. . . 2005 ZL9

Let me clarify my question a little. I am talking the K&N pods vs. the K&N relacement filter for the stock airbox.
As far as a new ZL I have e-mailed Kawasaki suggesting that they create an updated version using something like a ZX-12 engine for the powerplant. I told them that just like the original, that they would be guarnteed to sell EVERY one of them that they made!

Backlash

Hey "ZZ"

I'm sure that I'll get lots of backlash from the others but, I truely like the K&N replacement filter, with the air box modified to allow more pressurized airflow. It will allow you to keep the original look with the side covers intact.
Really, this thing rocks to start with. I'm sure that your get that extra, "oomph" your looking for as well as better mpg.

Hey Zoom, With the Airbox K&N you wont have to Rejet[ Also About the Same Price as the Stock Filter, But should last a Million Miles 8O ] The Pod Filters are made for a Stage 3 Setup, Aftermarket Pipes, Bigger Jet Kit, The Increase in Air will make it Run Lean if you dont Bump up the Jets. Reason I went with a Stage 3 was I can have The Carbs off in about 20 Minutes VS 4 Hours. Bob I have the Chrome Covers Mounted on Mine thanks to a Set of SWEET Brackets From Rick in NH, Later Rocky

Hey Nutter,
I'm putting on an aftermarket 4-1 exhaust so I'm guessing that re-jetting is a given.

Hey Zoom, I would Definatly Invest in a Stage 3 with a 4 into 1. K&N and Dynojet both Offer Stage 3 Kits, The Dynojet has a Little More in their Kit, Thats what I have on my 1. I dont think the Stock Airbox even with a K&N Filter would Pass Eneough Air for the Stage 3 and 4 into,As the D&D is even more Freeflowing than the Holeshot Slipons, Later Rocky  PS if you want to keep the Chrome Covers contact Rick in NH.

Getting Real

Geez guys;

That's a heavy investment.
Realisticly Rock, how "Dramatic" of an increase are we talkin' here.
And...
Is the increase most noticably in HP, ET or Top Speed.
What do you notice the most at the bars.

Sorry about the side cover mix up there Rock. I was sure I saw pic.s of your bike without them.
Now that I think about it, it was Brian. "KKD"

Hey Bob, Did a Dyno Run Last Year, RW HP 98.1, I do have Holeshot Slipons, Dynojet Stage 3 with K&N Pods, Dyna Coils and Wires and a Factory 4 Degree Advancer, I Probaly Gained 9 to 10 HP, The Midrange Realy Packs a WALLOP Now and also does a Lot Better on The Top, I have to Admit that I lost a Little of the Low End , But the Power Does Kick in Just above 3000 RPMS
Was It Worth all the Money, I Think So[ About $1400]
Look on the Kids Face on the GSXR 750 When I blew him off the Line, PRICELESS :D 8O , Later Rocky

Don't cha just

Ah Rocky;

I just love that ****.
Oops.
That curse word may have just cost me the championship.

PS. It's Friday afternoon. Don't you ever work? :D :)[

THINKING ABOUT PUTTING A 5 GALLON MUSTANG OR FATBOB TANK ON MY TRIKE JUST TO INCREASE RANGE.HAS ANYONE GOT ANY IDEA HOW DIFFICULT IT WILL BE TO MAKE FIT.I RECKON MY RANGE WILL BE LESS THAN 50 MILES ON THE TRIKE.DOE`S ANYONE HAVE ONE FOR SALE IN THE UK (TOO EXPENSIVE TO SHIP OVER THE POND)IF I GET ONE MY 900 TANKWILL BE AVAILABLE NOT IN THE GREATEST SHAPE BUT USABLE. CHEERS ANDY :drunken:

WONDERFULL YOU STARTED THIS!. I was at a cycle salvage place today. and low and behold I had a camera with me. here are two viable tanks.. the black one is one of my zltanks..... but either of these would be a viable choice. mods would have to be done for mountingbut width and length would work. since we have about 1.5/2 inches the can work with in distance to the seat
first one is a v-star tank.... near 5 gal. 99- present

If they want $400 for the bloody thing, then give it a miss. Fork that, I'll find something else here.

well cost isnt what I was looking at guys, I just wanted to post up some pics of what I would say are viable options. , myself I know we could get any of those tanks mounted and painted for the money they are asking for them as is.
