Petcock settings

This is a pretty stupid question but...

My 87 zl 1000 petcock has 3 settings, Res Pri On

I'm guessing that Res is reserve, meaning I can get a warning when I'm about to run out of gas by using Pri (I'm guessing primary (as apposed to reserve). But then there is On, which I know means off because i've disconnected the gas line before..

My friend says that pri doesn't mean primary, it means prime, which is used during cold starts and I should ride with it set to Res.

I say he's wrong, but I'm still not sure why they call off, on...

Anyone help me out on this?

The fuel tap is vacuum operated. Leave it in the "on" position until you run out of gas then flip it to "reserve". This means while parked! The "prime" is only to be used to fill the fuel bowls if the bike has sat for a while. Never leave it parked on "prime" you might fill your crankcase with fuel and cause a hydraulic lock when you try to start it blowing a hole in your piston/liner/headgasket/etc

Good luck!

Thanks for the explination. I've had it on reserve for the longest time, but i'll stick it to 'ON' now..

Went to look at a ninja 250 for my daughter 2nite 1.5 hours away. Should have know that things smelled funny when he didn't answer my questions very well.

Right b4 i left I specifically asked him, is there anything mechanically wrong that i should know about. he reiterated that just the small oil leak,

When I first got there my first question was " Why are you selling it/". He just threw up his hands and shrugged his shoulders. Upon closer inspection I could find nothing RIGHT with the bike. it was obviously beaten its whole life and frankly had I known i would have brought the Sig Sauer to finish the job and put it out of its misery. The little oil leak was ALL OVER THE BIKE, everywhere!!!

I haven't started it in quite a while the battery may be dead...Hmmm... don't you think that maybe you should have checked that b4 listing it for sale. As it turned out turning it over was no problem even with a dead battery as " THERE WAS NO COMPRESSION" Me thinks some of oil was blow by. But the bigger problem was the very loud thudding noises that the main journals were making when I was able to make it idle. HMMMM.... Lets see oil leak+ low compression+ crank noises= Run with no oil maybe.

I now start looking at the rest of the bike for even a parts bike offer. Lets see bolts missing everywhere...looking next to the bike was a car that would probably have the same sized bolts. Scratches everywhere and a dent in the tank that was the size of a baseball. Nice...Cracks in the bald tires. (OEM) Road rash on every piece. Both sides with the turn signals hanging on one side of the bike. Maybe he just didn't see these problems as problems.

I haven't been this misled in a LONG time. I left without saying a word. I mattered little as his english was broken at best. Oh well live and learn...again :nonono:

Nice one....Some people have no idea what they are doing...Next time, offer him 5 bucks, then tie that bike to the back of your truck and drag it up and down the street, just for the entertainment, and for wasting your valuable time...
moab...

My girlfriend and her dad went to look at a ZL600 for her on Sunday. They had arranged to meet him at his house on Sunday. They drove for a few hours to get there, rang the guy when they were near to find out exactly where his house was and the reply was "Oh, I'm not there, I'm still away for the weekend."

Some people just don't deserve your time.

I was on the other side, selling my son's pocket rocket bike. It's set in my shed for 2.5 years without running, and I was upfront. I said it ran before putting away, but it needed a battery and exhaust. All I wanted was $50 and they are like $400 new. Most the folks that called wanted me to have a new battery in it, the exhaust fixed and running and still only wanted to pay $50. I did sell it to a kid that loved working on them and needed one with lights so he could license it.

He'll eventually find some poor sucker to buy that POS from him. I'd be more concerned to find a power washed bike. Have seen that trick before, All traces of leaks washed off only to piss oil out all over the place later after money has changed hands... I prefer to see dirty engines. No secrets. The SOB should have given you the full story over the phone, before you got in your car. That **** annoys me.

It seems that people are the same all over the world.

When I was looking round for the wife's car I rang this guy to ask if he still had it and he said "yes". Right says I, I'm setting off now to come and have a look. "No problem" he says. I gave him my mobile number and set off. 2 hours driving to look at a particular car and when I get there....."Oh sorry I sold it this morning" "WHAAAT,
speechless-smiley-012.gif
I'VE JUST RUNG YOU AND YOU SAID IT WAS STILL FOR SALE!!!!!"
"Yeah sorry....I forgot"

Gravel forecourt........big wheelspin ........peppered about 4 cars in the garage as I left....Hope it did a lot of damage

Found an ex250 and have her all nicely snuggled away witht the other bikes. Her name is Nina. It was a rescue mission. It was a nice guy that wasn't too bright or mechanical. has a broken blinker from his wife setting it against a garage, she must not have known there was such a thing as a kickstand. He was selling it cuz he went into a corner too fast and almost didn't come out. Well after riding it 30 feet I asked if he had an air compressor, tires had roughly 8 lbs in them. Its an 04 with 2500 miles on it. Other than the turn signal being broke its pretty clean, not perfect but good to excellent. It does need a carb sync and has a Drs appt tuesday. interesting bike to ride. See a pic on the discussion forum Review of progressive shocks
