speedometer error

can any eliminator rider give info on speedometer error. I am running about 8 mph slower than what my speedometer reads. This is on my ZL1000. I just sold a ZL900 that had the same problem, about 8 mph slow. I also own a ZL600 and the readout on it is perfect, right on the corrrect mph. As far as I know cables are the same on all bikes, tires are the same size also, etc. Only difference is the speedometer itself . 160 to 150 mph. Any suggestions appreciated.
 
I'm not the most mechaniclly inclined person on this board but since no one has replied i'll take a stab..

I'm thinking is that since the spedo cable is all mechanical and not electric i'd replace that first. Last summer on my ZL 1000 my spedo was waving. I'd be at the constant speed but my speedometer would wave between 40 - 60mph. I replaced the cable(simple screw on) and everything has been fine since..

So if you haven't done that i'd replace the cable first, even it you think it's probably good, unless you have replaced it already since this problem started. The next thing after that would be to calibrate the unit itself.

Someone else will have to tell you how to do that part if it comes to it..

Are you still running the stock size tires? This effects cars as well as bikes so if the tires are larger than stock this is the problem. One size larger in passenger car tires Will + about 8 MPH at 60MPH.

All speedos have an error,even the digitals.
And M/Cs are the worst,uaually 5 to 10 mph over.
Try lubing it and see if it gets any better.

Size Does Matter

A couple of weeks ago a changed my front tire.
I was riding on the original twenty year old Dunlop
100/90-18.
It was cracked and hard and in need of replacement (about 15 years ago), so I put on a new Bridgestone Battleaxe 110/80-18. It is 1 centimeter wider and a wee bit taller. That sort of thing happens from brand to brand.
Any way, my speedo was reading 60mph at 4000rpm. It now reads 55mph at 4000 rpm. Every one I've asked says that 60 @ 4000 was accurate originally. So I have to remember that with this new tire, I'm actually going 5 mph faster than is indicated.
I guess twenty years of slight changes in technology will mean a bit of compensation on our part now and again.
 
Trouble is: how do you know your tach is accurate? 60 mph = 4,384 rpm if both guages are correct with stock tires. Based on my most recent ticket, my speedo is about 10% fast (with a ZRX front end and ZL speedo) and my tach is right on (with an IRL 150/90-15).

I'd say the cop buddy technique is the way to go....
 
Your tach reads off your engine, where your speedo reads off say a wheel sensor(for the new stuff).
 
I wanna hear from you guys and gals if you could park any 5 PRODUCTION bikes (no choppers please) in your garage, what would they be, ZL's are excluded.....Let's see how creative we can get!!!

Anything that'll do 0-227mph in 15 seconds, with over 300 hp and 425 ft/lbs of torque is good by me. :cool10:
