New ZL1000 Owner..... Overheating Prob.

I now own my first ZL1000.... Its a real sweet bike I couldn't pass on... 12,500 miles super clean for $800.00.... but there is one prob. The fan won't run with the bike running or key on position... Thus overheating at idle when left running... The fan kicks on fine with the key off.. i know there are two sensors and two relays for the fan but I dont know wich two relays to look at.... Are they under the tank? under the seat?.... Any help is better than no help at all.... Thanks Nicash :?

There are 2 sensors that control the fan. When the key is 'off' the one set at the lower temperature kicks in because the bike is then stationary and no more cooling air is able to flow over the radiator, therefore the engine could overheat and cause damage whilst it is stood still. This is normal.

The sensor that is in circuit when the key is switched 'on' is at a higher temperature and (in my experiece) NEVER comes on. This results in coolant being ejected from the overflow bottle almost every time you are held up in traffic. I have long thought that Kawasaki made a mistake with the temperature settings.

What I have done is to wire the lower temperature sensor in to the 'running' circuit, so that when the bike is stood still with the engine running, the fan kicks in and keeps everything cool.

Up underneath the tank on the right hand side (as you sit on the bike) there is a relay. Going to that relay are a Yellow wire and a white/green wire (some others as well but ignore those) cut these 2 wires (bit radical I know). Now connect ALL 4 loose ends together) job done. What this does is to put the 97deg sensor in the cicuit when its running but also keeps it in the circuit when it is off, But also keeps the 110deg sensor in the cicuit as a back up in case the 97 deg sensor fails. Phew, did you get all that?

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info krazy... I think what i'll do is use "scotch locks" instead if cutting the wires... then I can just use a jumper wire from one to the other... Thanks Again.... Nicash :D

:D Finaly had a chance to get the tank off... Just used a scotch lock to connect the wires that way I can remove it anytime ... The Operation was a Success ... Worked like a charm... Thanks again.........

Kawa krazy that is an amazing trick. I'm going to have to do that on mine. I can't not believe its that simple. Oh would that be the same for the 900? I haven't had anytime to ride and I'm so ticked. It usually stalls at some point. Someday, someday I say!@!

overheating

Hello nicash,
I also had an overheating problem - turned out to be a bad radiator cap. You might replace yours just to be safe - they are cheap. Later.

Hey like CYCLEFUSION asked: Is the wiring trick the same on the 900?

well many of you all would like to have a bigger tank, I took the liberty to photo shop a vulcan 5+gal tank on the eli. aoh the pipes/exhause were swiped from a zx10.... here is a pretty good idea of what that tank would look like on an 85/86 I left the Vulcan dash on it also

wanna see any other tanks on one?

Thats very attractive. It would take alot for that to happen thats one big ass tank.

Well mark if those Knuckleheads @ occ can build the crap they do I would think that anyone with a decent tig/mig could make it happen couple tabs, some shock rubbers, its a done deal..... and if I recall the drifer tank is only around 4 gal, a bit narrower the eli frame has gobs of room to work with the tank was made to only to make the engine appear alot bigger adds to the "big guy stance" with the plethora of gas tanks to choose from I am confidant that a 3+gal tank could be found that wont comprimize the "Look"

the best tank mod i have seen for the eli is one that was widened. retained the stock lines and looked nice. I'll have to remember where i seen it.

I think I know what you are talking about and it seems to me it was on a Euro Eli site, possibly Denmark. They took the Eli tank and added about 1.5" to either side of the filler neck. A lot of work but it looked clean.

The range on the Zl's is my biggest complaint. Rick, I like the pic. Little extra time on your hand from all the snow? Too bad it couldn't be 3D where you could rotate it and get a top and front view.

Hello all,
I have about 8 of the expanded tank pics. Not sure how to get them on here though as my dial up connection is horrible. Don't remember where they came from. 3 of the pics are of a finished tank on a bike - painted and all done. The others are of how the guy did it. Let me know if there is an easy way to get the pics on here or if anyone wants to see them. I can down size them but I don't know if that will give a good enough view. I've been building a pole barn here at the house so I'm on and off of here at random. Later.

Well for now we have to post on a website such as photobucket and link to them in the forum using the img bbcode. If you click on the bbcode link down below to the left when your typing your post it will tell you all about it. You can always email me the pics, if your dialup will allow it and i'll get them uploaded here and send you the links or i can post them. Those are the pics i seen but cant find them anywhere. Pretty slick job.

I hit reserve @ 45 to 50 mi. on the 12,less if I hammer on it.

The one you're probably remembering is the red 900 that UKPete had on the EliminatorGB site. Unfortunately he's sold it now and I don't know who's got it. That was really nicely finished off and unless you knew your Eliminators, you couldn't tell it had been done. I'm sure I've got a picture somewhere on my 'puter but I'm b*ggered if I can find at the mo.

Ok

Ok Mark, sounds like the easiest way would be to just email them one at a time to you. They range from 34 kb to around 800kb I think. Once you've got them you can do whatever you want with them to get them posted. I'll title the emails Big Tank pic #1 etc. in case you have a spam filter running or something. Later.
