1. Guest,
We need good tech writers that are willing to help out here at ZL-OA. If you like taking photos of jobs as you perform the steps on your repairs, have historical ads/documents from old magazines, or any else you think belongs in the Technical Library than you might be able to help. Send a private message to Furchin, Mudrunner88, Chris, Jarney, Wuputt, or Markus56 and we can lead you in the right direction to get started.

20190918_192310.jpg 20190918_192241.jpg 20190918_133208.jpg Hi guys, having a few issues with my new addiction, the ZL1000. The starter is clunking and making a racket. It is ok with really short bursts but if held on when cold it makes an aweful noise.
Also, im having trouble locating an original indicator, ( if what it has on it is indeed an original).

:hello: Welcome to ZL-oa. Is the starter tight. Remove it and bench test it using a 12 volt battery using jumper cables. Place the negitive (black) clamp on the outer case with no paint. Then touch the red clamp on the starters threaded post while holding the starter. Do this for 10 seconds at a time. Your starter clutch inside the motor may be going bad.

Thanks R.J. No worries, I will bench test it today before I give the old girl a service. I am worried that it will be the starter clutch. Dont want to rebuild it just yet, having way too much fun riding it now the weather is improving.

:hello: You are welcome. :notworthy:. One other thing make sure that the starters threaded stud doesn't turn. Check ground fault isolation on the starters stud using a multi-meter set on ohms. Place a lead on the stud and the other on the outer case (no paint) of the starter. The meter should read mega ohms. Your turn signals are not OEM.

Ok, thanks. Will check it out this weekend, didnt get a chance today.

No worries, thanks for the input. Now to figure out what the indicators are from, they do look nice all polished up so replacing the 1 would be good.

:hello: Are your turn signals plastic. I seen that style on E-bay but they are plastic.

No, they are old school cast alloy, look great on the bike but i fear it may be impossible to track down a spare to match :-(

Put the new bars on, may be a little small though. They are comfortable and look great but will need to change the brake and clutch lines and the throttle cable to shortened ones to suit. Looks untidy at the moment.
Fresh oil, coolant, brake and clutch fluids this week. Should keep the old girl happy. Just sent the seat in to be reupholstered, will be ready for the weekend.

That seat looks awesome. How about a pic with the bike attached to it.

:hello: Nice. :notworthy:. I like that the lower rear fender is done in silver. Nice touch. The bike looks great silver. If I was to vist another Country it would be the land down under.

Yeah, it's a great yard and pretty nice view :)

Thanks, just spent a few hours after these pics washing all the bikes, (KTM dirt bike was filthy) the ZL1000 and CBR look a lot nicer with all the bugs and road grime cleaned off. Ready for the road ;)

Yeah, the seat sets it off. It's a silver vynil. The fender is a nice touch, I had considered changing it back to black but looks nice and tidy all silver.

Yeah, hope you get the chance to visit this side of the planet one day :) it is a great place to be.

:hello: WAD: Do you have a lot of dirt roads in your area. Which KTM do you have. My oldest Son had a KTM 150. Back in the 80s I had a KTM 504. I had to carry spare head light bulbs. The thing shook so bad it would blow out the head light. :laughing7:. ___________________________________ IMG_1490.jpg
