ZL600 forks

Need new bike... gotta ride this year

Well guys I am hunting for something to ride this year. Not riding all last year absolutely killed me! Unfortunately my 9 won't be ready any time soon. I want to rebuild this thing right and not just half-ass it just to get it on the road. Plus Mach has got me wanting to put a 1200 in there... damn you Mach!

If anyone know of a decent ride for max $1500 (the cheaper the better) let me know. Exterior doesn't have to be good looking but has to be functional and need little to actually ride. Preferrable something with some element of style and engine size I'm not real picky but I don't want a complete basket case either.

I would also like to find a second bike to ride back and forth to work so I'm not putting wear and tear on my 900. Something fast enough for the interstate but doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Since my current transportation is my Dodge truck that get 13 mpg it wouldn't take long for a bike that got 40-50 mpg to pay for itself.
 
Cheapest bike I have in stock is a`00 ZRX 1100 w/8kmi.
for $2,200,just needs a front fender.
 
Sounds like a pretty decent deal Mach however if I spent that much on a new bike I wouldn't have any $$$ left over to work on my eliminator with :) I did find a 80 something fazer700 on ebay tho...

Don`t buy a 700 anything,they`re last minute throw-togethers
to get in under the 750cc tariffs that came about in the 80s.

Gary, thanks for pointing that out, for some reason the site drops avatars occasionally and I haven't figured out why :?:

Mach, are the 700s really that bad??? I can understand the reasoning about a throw together however this is something temporary to ride until the Eli is back on the road. I've also heard that a 1000 transplant is rather easy in the fazer... and that sounds fun for the future.

Plus I'm kind of drawn to the way it looks, sort of makes me think a Triumph Speed Triple hooked up late one night with a Vmax....

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the front suspension between the A1 (85) and B1 (95) ZL600? I've got a '95, the diameter is 37mm and I have found out the fork tube length is 594mm. Anyone got the '85-6 version they can check for me?

Blimey, just had a brainwave, the fork seals are the same so the diameter must be the same :detective:

Just the fork lengths and I guess spindle size.

I have the 400 (which are the same anyway) but I won't be able to get to it till the weekend.

i believe the A1/B1 brake discs are on opposite sides so the caliper mount would also be on the opposite leg.
 
Yeah, the big give away is the brake disc. I brought the ones I found on ebay anyway. Not the best set in the world but for £40 they don't leak so will get me through the MOT. I need to save up for some new tubes.

Anyone had there forks ground and rechromed? Any good?

I guess the other option is to find a frontend off another bike that will fit.
 
:hello2: jesus nice1 didnt even know there was a place for the ol zl, an heres me thinkin of sellin it cos it keeps needin fixin- bit of history Got my zl600 1986 for 630euro's, it had 15,500miles on .. cracked exhausts, dondgy wireing on indicators and run wires, no brake light switch, broken wheel bearing, leaking forks, un balanced carbs with bits missing, no rev counter, and the handle bars moved forward!!! meh :/
so i have gas welded the fractured exhausts, rebuilt carbs, replaced cam tensioner, polished like mad, fixed wireing switches indicators kill switch etc,..... all i need to do now is fix forks(pitted) never done b4, and fit wheel bearing.. im only 25 so let me off for being a newbie to mechanicing a bit ... gr8 bike tho thrashed it around till i noticed.. well till it bothered me the wheel bearing, jus wondering what forks n front wheel fit a 600 86 on mags ... :)
