Rocket's Pics, Finally

OK guys, so I couldn't wait. Here are a couple of premature photos of my pleasure machine:

http://www.eliminator-us.org/modules.php?name=coppermine&cat=10088

Please give me some feedback on your opinion of the project thus far (colour, driving lights, sissy bar, polished fuel cap surround etc). The left side is not included because I haven't fitted the badges to the side covers yet (you may notice the right one is just sitting there, proud).

When my brother painted the bike I got him to do the driving light back shells (they were all rusted so I sand blasted them). He also painted the air box side covers as they were damaged and the chrome was stripped off for the repairs. They were too expensive to re-chrome so I figured if I need a pair of chrome covers, I’d wait for spares on eBay (well KERA came first, many thanks to Crusty). The chrome side covers you see in the pics are the two off Crusty’s bike so now I have the option of all Candy Lime Green air box covers (matching rear covers and driving lights) or chrome air box covers with another pair of chrome driving lights. I can’t wait ‘til I get hold of a plastic front guard and get it done in green as well, that’ll complete my colour option set. I recon it's a toss-up as to which will look better, what say you all? I guess I could keep the chrome and painted items as alternates on the off days when I want to ride something different.

Does anyone know of a plastic front guard that will fit on the ZL without any mods (or minimal mods) and still looks the part?

I’ll upload the pics with the two options fitted once I get the chance to refit them and take photos (hopefully the bike will be finished and registered).

Hey Rocket, NICE JOB MATE. In my opinion its whatever you LIKE that COUNTS :D :D , Probaly why I've been "Hacking" on mine for 5 Years 8OLater Rocky

Hi Guys,
has anyone put ZZR1100 barrels onto a ZL Thousand ?
I believe the 1100 was a bigger version of the same engine, and in search of more ponies,
(without giving the game away :nonono: ) thought that fitting barrels and pistons may be very sneaky. :D
Any info would be appreciated.
Vin :whax:

Hi Vinney,
a friend of mine just fitted zzr 1100 barrels to his zl900.
Zrx head with zzr 1100 cams. had to have the head shaved to get the compression up. Take it from me it goes.
By the way the zzr barrels do not fit a a zl head.
Cheers

Markzl

zzr1100 barrels

Cheers Mark.
Just to make sure, ZZR1100 barrels and cams, with ZRX1100 cylider head ?
Do you know how much your mate had skimmed / or the clearance that he left?
Any dyno figures or compression figures would be nice !
Will keep my eyes open for donors on Ebay.
LOL,
Vin :whax:

zzr barrels

Thanks for the quick reply Mark. :D

I have two ZL 1K's. one I intend to keep pretty much stock. the other I would like to make into a bit of a "sleeper" - to play 1/4 mile and traffic light games with :rotf:

So I am not in a mad rush if you can't get the details straight away. :salute:

LOL,
Vin :blackknight:

zzr1100 barrels

Hello
I am the friend Mark talked about
It is not easy
You have to make the 4 holes 1mm bigger so the barrels fit into the crankcase.
Then you have to shave the cylinderblock 1.4 mm
Then you have to use a ZRX head (a zl head does not fit)
I also used the zzr1100 cams and valvesprings
Also have stage3,supertrapps with custom made headers (39mm inside)
b.t.w I have a ZL1000 lower end with oilbypass
It is not recommended to do that with a zl900 lowerend because the connection rods are smaller and the stroke shorter
Trust me there is no bike faster from 0 to 60miles .
(talking about r1,gsxr etc not turbo bikes or other upgrated bikes)

SWEET zlrx! Sounds pretty awesome to me, have you thought of settin er on a dyno?

BTW, welcome to this great site, hope you get to be a regular.

zzr barrels

Thanks for the info ZLRX. :D

Your motor sounds awesome. :headbang:

Did you stick with ZL carbs or ZZR ones ?
What did you do with timing chain - anything ? Does the standard ZL fit ? :detective:
Hope you become a regular on this site - there are a lot of sound dudes here ! :dancingfool:

Say thanks to Mark for putting you in touch.
I am sure I will think of other questions that i hope you don't mind helping with.
LOL,
Vin :whax:

zzr barrels

Hello
The timing chain is from a zzr1100 or zrx1100 (the are the same)
The cylinderhead from a zrx is simular to zzr head exept for the inletports
A zzr has them under an angel of I believe 20 degrees
A zrx has them straitht on the cylinderhead
Thats why a zzr head doesn't fit you can't mount the carbs
I used a gpz1000 carbs (36mm)
In the future i will mount 40mm carbs and then also dyno it

Later ZLRX

Thanks for the info ZLRX,
I have bought a set of ZZR11 barrels and pistons :D

Now searching for ZRX!! head :detective:

May try a set of crankcases off a ZG/GTR 1000 - get them machined and then swap them over ?

Did you do a squish band test on your set up to make sure the valves won't get clobbered, or the piston hit the head ?

Was the oil by-pass already done on your oilpan?
I was going to get WESTECH to do one, but they don't do it anymore.

Hope you don't mind me asking so many questions, but I really like the sound of what you have done and want to give it a go !
Would love to see the dyno numbers. :study:

zzr barrels

When you mount and adjust the cams the same as an zzr or zrx you don't have a problem because de configurations are the same
For wat about the crankcase you also can use an zzr top crankcase
But when you will not open the crankcase then turn around the engine
(the connectionrods facing the floor so the aluminiumdust will not fal in the engine) and than take a grinder(dremel)
and make the holes 1mm bigger
Prevent any dust comes into the engine with towels etc

For what about the oilbypass it is easy to make it yourself
Just take a tee fitting and mount that on the place of the oilpressureswitch
In one side you mount then the oilpressureswitch
on the other side you make a pipe to a fitting you make
in your crankcase beneth the rubber plug right down in the engine (the place where bij a gpz the adjustment is for a balance axel)
Then from the other side of the fitting you make a pipe right into the block for the 3de rod.
Drill a hole trough the block so the oil will go to the crank
It is not easy to write everything down because of my englisch and a lot of technical words
Hope I expand everything right

ZZR Barrels

Thanks Ewoud,
Don't worry about your English - I have read and understood what you have written OK. :D
Can you read what I have written about OIL STARVATION ?
I would value your opinion on this, as there seems to be a lot of rumour and speculation on this topic. :detective:
:)
Could you use a ZRX's camshafts instead of ZZR cams?
If so, I could source a complete ZRX top end, rather than mix the ZRX head with ZZR cams. :detective:
Good luck with the 40mm carbs :D
LOL,
Vin :blackknight:

zzr barrels

Hello
at first
I haven't read your article good
The only thing i know is that every gpz/zl/zrx/zzr/gtr
Has this problem because they have the same bottom
I have seen engines with 140000 km and still running but also the engine i just bought
It is a zrx1100 engine with 27000 km with a broken 3th rod

http://cgi.ebay.de/Schlachtmotor-fu...ryZ88481QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I shall read your article and reply tommorrow

second:
Of course you can use the zrx cams but zzr cams will give you at least 10 hp more
you must see it like this the engine I have is exact the same as a zrx1100
Bore and stroke are the same, only the connecting rods of a zl1000 are 1.4 mm shorter ,thats why i have shaved the top of the barrels so i will have the same close ratio
( Stoke stays the same You also can say the pstons of a zzr/zrx are 1.4 mm lower than pistons of a zl1000)
In the ZRX wolrd its very common to use zzr cams just search the forum at
www.zrxoc.com and type zzr cams
you will find very much topics
The thing you must do is use the zzr valvesprings because you engine runs max 11500 rpm until your igniton says enough
A zrx runs at a max of 10500 rpm
The zzr has double springs you don't have to worry they fit ,because the head and the valves of a zrx /zzr are the same but its a must otherwise your valves don't close at high rpm
I will post this week a few pictures also from the oilbypass

ZLRX

Thanks for the reply Ewoud,
I thought these Kawasakis were water cooled !
Thats some ventilation hole in the ZRX. :crybaby:

I like the sound of 10 bhp more, but don't want to lose any torque low down the rev range. :nonono:

Acceleration is the Eliminators game, so top end horsepower is a bonus if you don't lose it at the traffic lights. :headbang:

I now get why you skimmed 1.4 mm from the cylinder head - the pistons sit lower.

I will visit http://www.zrxoc.com/ and see what people are doing there. :)

LOL,
Vin :blackknight:
