ZL 1000 split into atoms: engine upgrade questions

Hello
Lookin very good nice jop to be proud of:headbang:
The only thing of concern is the cooling
I have a oilcooler and a (bigger) zzr1100 radiator
I think the original radiator can handle it but in extreme conditions it is to small
A oilcooler is not that difficult just use a bellypan of a gpz1000 (zx1000) and the oilcooler also .It is a easy swap you oly have to make a braket for the oilcooler.
The exhaust wrap is also not a good way to get rite of some heat.:no-no-no:
Hope these tips help you to make the ultimate bike
ZLRX:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks, yep im gonna be keeping a close eye on water and oil temperature:winkcool: .

Just curious, why is exhaust wrap not good? i thought its sole purpose was to keep the heat in the pipes, instead of radiating to its surroundings?

And thanks for all the tips so far mate :notworthy:

Thanks :-) definatly getting it dyno´d , cant wait :headbang:

In regards to the pingel adapter, im gonna try the way it is first, and see if there´s enough clearance, so hoping it wont become an issue, but if it does, then the adapter is definatly worth a look, or maybe a different petcock.

You might find the factory petcock won't keep up anyway

I think the wrap is an bad idea because of 2 things

A: The exhaust gasses stayes hotter and so as you know hot gasses are bigger in volume then cold gasses :winkcool:
If you have cooler headers the exhaust gasses will shrink as soon they are in the header and flow faster through the pipes:nike: wich means more power

B:The wrap shall insolate the heat so the engine and header will stay warmer.:winkcool:
All the heat that stay in the engine has to be cooled through the radiator (wich is not to big)

I have a lot of cooling and eventhough the fan goes on several times on a warm day :angryfire::angryfire:

I know a lot to think about but I hope It helps

Not sure about the wrap increasing engine heat, most off the post ive read regarding exhaust wrap, seemed to be positive, but im pretty sure, that the hotter you can keep your exhaust gasses, the faster they will try to escape = faster gas flow, vice versa, the more they cool and loose density= pressure , the slower the flow will get, but im gonna be keeping my eyes on everything for sure:winkcool:.

Anyways ever since i put pods on my bike, i had been missing those lovely chrome airbox covers, so i made a braket for them and the coils, which i decided to move, since there was freaky little room left where they were originally.

Nice work! Is that something you can reproduce for us easily?

Sorry mate, but simply to time consuming, on top off that the one i made wouldn´t fit a stock zl 1k , since its altered to fit the zrx head and carbs.

If anyone wants to try it out, here´s some tips.

Use your airbox as a guide, and notice that the 3 holes for the cover, have a different depth to them, not saying you have to make an exact copy, but if i remember correctly, the hole above the mounting hole, needs to come in towards the center of the frame, so that the painted cover will fit.

Use the rubber grommets from your airbox, the holes for these need to be 13mm.

Make the bracket first, and the holes afterwards, start by drilling a small hole, and then check with your chrome cover.

the benifit in exhaust wrap is keeping the exhaust gasses from cooling and therefore loosing velocity. the more velocity the exhaust gas has while escaping, increases the velocity of the intake charge, the air fuel mix drawn into the cylinder. the idea is to really ram that air fuel into the cylinder and achieve some amount of compression of the gasses into the cylinder when the valves close up.

as far as heating of the motor, my experinence is just the opposite. the exhaust wrap on my vmax exhaust helped the bike run substantially cooler. why??? take a look at where your exhaust runs... probably along both sides of your oil pan. this creates the effect of turning your oil pan into an oil cooker. oil cannot be effectively cooled with those red hot pipes surrounding it. oil is a lubricant and a coolant. removing the heat generated from exhaust into the oil pan made a huge difference on my bike. wraping the exhaust dramaitically reduces heat transference back into the motor.

Has superbikes wraps ......:no-no-no: no
Has moto gp wraps .....:no-no-no:no

I think it is not really that difference if you have wraps or not,but to get rite of some heat I should not use them
You also take of your coat if you have it warm. The more cooling surface the better I should think:winkcool:
Don't get me wrong i don't want to be the the guy wich always want to have it right but non of the reasons has convinsed me .:mblah05::mblah05:
At dragracing they use wraps to warm up the engine as fast as they can because of the short period between starting and 100% prefomence .
So that was the last word I spend about it,even though you have a nice engine and let us al know if it runs and and how much hp it generates.

No worries mate :headbang: IMO its just one off those things, where the more you try to read up on it, the more confused you get :rotf:.

And now on to some great news, ITS ALIVE :headbang:, got i fired up last night, took about 30 seconds to fill the carbs, and then fired it up like it was meant to be, no funny noises, just pure evil  , i dont have any mufflers on right now, so its kind a loud, but still amazing.

One thing i noticed, is that the throttle has seemed to turn in to a light switch, there is no hessitation, just the engine screaming feed ME feed ME:headbang:

:headbang: Finally recieved the parts that were out for chroming, so spent the day rebuilding the forks, and calipers, and boy do they look great :-).

Should be recieving the rest of the parts i need during this week, and if all goes well :notworthy: i may get her rolling next weekend :laughing7:

Get your sun glases ready - wow - thats shiney!

You would have been better getting some stealth fighter paint with the engine mods you have done. :rotf:

Will look stunning when altogether - well done!:headbang::notworthy:

Looks awesome, I'm doing my front end next winter for sure. Later.

Hard to tell a price for the calipers, i paid app 600 bucks for everything in the picture, and that was with me polishing everything except the calipers, on top of that i come from Denmark across the pond, where prices are very different from you guys, just like our wages, but have a lok on the web, i found several plating companies, listing app prices on theyre web pages.

Finally recieved some long waited parts, such as rims, shaft box, side rails, triple trees, and a whole bunch of other stuff, from a company in germany that do something they call PTV chrome, and from what i understand it involves a vacuum chamber with aerolished aluminum i think, and afterwards they recieve a transparent protective layer of some sort, anyways IMO it loks great, not exactly 100% like chrome, but more like highly polished silver or chrome, if that makes any sense.

Very nice. I like what you did with the rear bar. My 1000 is also gray - I think that looks great. Later.
