Vintage Motorcycle Days (VMD) 2011

If you're getting the kit from bacchus just have him bring it to VMD

I thought he may be coming...but wasn't sure!! I'll send him a PM and ask if it's possible.... Thanks for the thought!!
How long should the plates soak in oil??? I was going to soak them on the way to VMD.

Will also need a tool to hold the clutch basket. I can borrow one from gremlin if Chris or no one else will have one out there.

Mark, if you can borrow it from Gremlin, please do so, as mine has disappeared from my garage.

It wasn't me!!! ;)

Thanks guys!! I just got a PM from Bacchus and he said he would bring the Clutch kit with him to the show. (Thanks Mark, great idea!!)
I ordered the other parts Mark suggested as well!! SO....It looks like we will be putting in a new clutch in the old girl!!!

I won't be able to soak the clutch plates on the drive out though...I'll have to do it once we get there!!!

Thanks guys!! I am getting more excited each day!!!

I happen to have that special pair of vise grips that are made to hold the clutch basket and I will have it with me at VMD! Gotcha' covered Scotty!!
Yea that looks good scotty. Check the tech section for the clutch leaf spring upgrade, I just put it in there

Sweet!! Thanks!! I will make sure I have everything that I may need....(I hope!!) This is the one thing I have been wanting to do to my bike but I just didn't have the balls to tear apart by myself!! I am stoked that you guys are willing to show me how to take care of it.

By the way....What kind of beer should I bring?? I am a whiskey drinker and usually don't drink much beer and if I do,it's Coors light.
Or is that you guys drink whatever is COLD...and free??? ;)

One more tip, if you can swing it, there was some discussion on the aftermarket kits not quite being up to par on the thickness of the steel plates, might be worthwhile to purchase a thicker and thinner steel plate from kawasaki - there are three different thicknesses - the clutch plates are supposed to be a certain thickness when all installed - check the manual for specs. I put in a barnett kit a year or so ago and the steel plates were a hair shy of the factory thickness - I know I put in at least one of the thicker plates, not sure if I swapped out any others. I've still got a clutch problem on my 900 as well, maybe we can get some of you gurus to look at it too - hahaha. Later.

I'll drink anything but keep me away from the Whiskey, don't need kicked out of VMD

The wisky is like pulling the Pin on a hand gernade for me, Its not a matter of if I'm gonna get into trouble but rather How Much trouble!
Havent touched the stuff in years for that very reason!

Well...What are the thoughts on this?? Has anyone used the Barnett kit and had the same issues? Should I stick with the Barnett kit? I can pick up a thicker plate if that's what I have to do..... Like I said, I know NOTHING about the clutch in my bike...YET!!! Let me know if I should look into getting something like Jarney is talking about.....

As much as I love the taste of corn squeezings myself, best for me to stay away from it too. I'm going to watch the clutch being replaced in case I have to do it in the future. Might need brake fluid too, if you have to bleed the clutch.

So, should I be worried at all about the after market clutch kits not being quite right?? It seems that Jarney has had an issue..... Could it be that it was just a bad kit.... Or should I just roll the dice?? I just don't want to end up leaving with some issues that I will not be able to take care of once I get home.

Just trying to cover my bases!!

No biggie, you'll be fine with just a standard kit - it's not going to disable the bike or anything, and once you see how easy this is, you'll be able to go back home, fine tune the clutch later if you want with the bigger or smaller clutch plates. And yeah, I may have gotten a bad batch of steel plates, but somewhere on this site, it was duscussed a little and at least one or two others had the same findings. Most probably don't check the thickness of the plates, just assume that the kits are right. Later.

Thanks Jarney!! I just tend to worry and overthink things in general.... It's my nature I guess. I'm the guy that reads the instructions 3 times before I tear into anything....
I did work on it most of the winter and learned a BUNCH from you guys!! Bacchus is bringing the clutch kit with him from AZ and I picked up the gasket and the other parts Mark told me to buy tonight from the dealer. I should be set as long as we make the trip without issues!!! Can't wait!! I'm getting excited for this and I have never been there yet!!!

You're gonna love it. We're going to be sitting up by the Keyhole turn sitting in the lawn chairs swigging a cold one with a stogie... but that's after I stop down and say hi to the ZL-OA guys along the way. I'm also anticipating meeting up with some Superhawk riders who will be there with vintage Yamaha RDs.

I just love vintage days man!

i see it's going 2 b real hot starting wed-fri. ouch.

Matt, got trailer in driveway, & i'm going to start packing up, & getting everything in order. lots of work to do, & i think it would be good to get a head start, so we can relax & not feel rushed early next week.
if you are free sometime this weekend & want to stop by, give me a call.

Will be making my maiden voyage to VMD solo 645 miles one way.
Hellion is back together and seems to be running fine, although a bit warm but not sure if he is running hot or if its because it's just so damn hot out!
Will check into it more tomorrow after work.
I am planning on pulling out of here Wednesday morning about 9 am, that should put me in St Louis by no later then noon.
Then should hit Indianapolis by 4/ 5pm ish, and will probably hole up around there may be hotelling it if its this d@mn hot all the way there.
Then will leave Indianapolis by 9 am ish Thursday and should be hitting VMD by noon/ 1pm ish.

Lots to do for me this week to get ready. I had planned on taking off work wednesday but that doesn't look likely to happen. I have to change oil on the Honda and on my Tahoe. I need to get my trailer back to the house and put the chocks in it. Both bikes need cleaned up and the 1K I got back together yesterday, but it is running like poo...I have put an additive in the tank and about a gallon of fresh gas. I ran her for about 10 minutes and shut off to let it soak. Will recheck it when I get home today. I have been working 9 hours and sometimes 10 during the week. It is gonna be pretty hot and muggy the next few days so work should be fun. I am bringing my grill, cooler, my 10x10 tent and borrowing a 17x20 canopy from my buddy to bring. I also need to gather up my tools and stuff and get those ready to go too....busy, busy, busy...

Friday night Test n Tune at Dragway42 gates open at 5:30. We should leave Mid-Ohio around 4:15! It should take about 45min to get there, but I know from past years it takes much longer to get our group rolling. I plan on riding the bike to the track. I figure we should have 1 vehicle capable of hauling 1 bike just in case anyone breaks down. You will need riding jacket, full face helmet and gloves to race. $15 to race and $5 to watch. There is a Gas Station in West Salem just down the road from the track, but it won't be open when it's time to go home! We may have to make a slight detour into Lodi to fuel up for the ride back to the campground. Also we will have to make sure the campground is open for us to return late that night.

Is anyone not going to the dragstrip?

trailer is 99% packed & ready to go Thurs. morning. Eleanor, & newest project ZL are strapped in nicely. just need to get last minute supplies.

Eastwood, & 1yr. wonder,

wheel chocks are in, & ready for your ZL's.
