Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

So I've got an '86 900 with oil out my weep hole. It's a .1 pump. How do I get the parts to rebuild it? Is someone still selling "kits" ? Any help is greatly appreciated. The leak is getting bad and summer is almost over here. I need more saddle time before the snow flies here !!!!!!!!

Ian, I'll start another thread to see if there is enough interest to get more kits. I will have to know what size mechanical seal you need, the rest of the parts are the same size.

Yeah, need to know what size. Depending on that, I have some spares just for this reason. Later.

I just rebuilt my pump, the oil seals we shot, suprisingly the bearings were good but I replaced them anyway. The shaft pressed out easy with an arbor press , the impeller shaft didn't show any wear. I like and arbor press better than a hydralic press when I can use one , I like the feed back the arbor press gives. I don't understand why use extra sealer when the o-rings get replaced and all the bolts are torqued properly. Also I used o-ring lube on all the rubber seals to facilitate re-assembly . All the pics and suggestions were so helpful , you guys rock.

I like to use the extra sealer on these parts because because it gives me a little extra security when you have small imperfections and/or corrosion pits on the mating surfaces. Especially the pipe that gets bolted to the pump. I even use it inside the hose

. . . and the oil seal will wiggle out of place sometimes.

I hope the oil seal doesn't wriggle out , I had to press it in. My coolant pipe does have pits, I put rust converter on it and am going to try and fill the pits.

:hello: I'd like some. At the moment I have 6 water pumps to rebuild. I have all the parts except for the mechanical ceramic seal.

Hi all, new to the forum and ZL workld. I just love the bike! I've been struggling with my leaking 86 ZL900 water pump. Wanted to rebuild it, so I found the bearings and seals locally for cheap, however i have not had much luck finding the mechanical seal.

Has anyone had ANY luck getting a good PN for the 2-piece mechanical seal?

I purchased:
2 ea bearings-Nachi Quest --PN-6001-2NSE9 (can even be ordered on Amazon)
1 ea oil seal-TCM Dichtomatic--PN-12X28X7TC-BX (can even be ordered on Amazon)

:hello: PM sent. Someone posted a link to a ZRX forum a while back. They sell both the 32 mm & 35 mm OD for around $30. Also one from a 1981 Honda CR/TRX 250 R trike will work for the 32 mm OD water pumps. It costs around $32.50. Post # 213 has a link to a European site but I think the other post that I seen is based in the USA. I tried to order 1 of each from the European site but my order would not go through. See post & 4 of my water pump rebuild thread for the 32 mm Honda ceramic seal. It is in the Members Services section. http://www.zl-oa.com/community/threads/Water-pump-rebuilding-service.21392

We never found a local source for the mechanical seals. The kits we were getting came from Snakedoctor who lives in Thailand - so if you know anyone over there, they may be able to source them or get the kits put together again. Snakedoctor had health issues and has not been able to get the kits for us for some time now. And remember, there are different sizes of internal parts on these water pumps so you really need to tear them apart first, before ordereing the parts to get the right sizes. Later.

Thanks for the reply RJ and Jarney! My pump is apart and I measured the seal sections. The seal cup is 28.5mm, not even close to 32 or 35mm that was mentioned. I saw a lot of posts earlier that talked about 28.5mm and 30mm seals. Are the 32 and 35mm dimensions a measurement of somewhere on the pump, or is it of the actual mechanical seal cup? Dimensions of my seals are posted here:

I'll continue to work to get a good PN for something that is available out there. I've replaced dozens of pump seals on cycles, pool pumps etc so I know there is has to be a source out there for them here, it's just a matter of leg work.

:hello: The water pumps casted portion that the ceramic seals cup seats/presses into is tapered so it's kind of hard to get a proper measurement. Take your measurement at the very tip of the lip. An old/used cup measures smaller in diameter than a new one. This is due to after pressing in a new one the water pumps body makes the over all diameter about 1/2 mm to 1 mm smaller. So when installing a used seal make sure you put a bead of a high quality type of sealant around the rim of the cup. I use the gray RTV. Also remember to wipe off any sealant the remains on the pumps body.
