Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

Chris - got my kits today, thanks a bunch!

Now - does anyone know what to use to bond the metal half into the pump bore? When I was looking at seals online, some had a red adhesive already applied. I think it bonds when heated up?

How about the ceramic half. It has a rubber seal, but is adhesive needed?
 
Also unsure of what order to install the bearings - press both into the pump body, and then press in the impeller shaft?
 
I would use something to adhere/seal those parts in place, it would help with assy too. Maybe a ultra thin coat of copper(ultra) rtv. Put bearings into housing then press impeller in.

I'm glad to see everything arrived and if I can help with anything else, please let me know. I am interested to know how the box arrived as I sent the boxes with just string tied around the outside as Thailand requires it that way when it's shipped "registered mail" so they can inspect the contents. Were they still just tied or were they taped up and was there any issues with US customs?

Chris - mine was tied w/string, slightly mashed but no damage. Just had to show ID @ post office.

Thanks for doing this. Wish I'd gotten a couple more sets, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
 
Wow, that's a trip on the string, would have thought they would have taped it in Thailand. 555 Crazy place Thailand. Whenever you need something KB, just let me know.

Correct! You may need to use a deepwell socket if the impeller shaft pushed the inner bearing out. I use blue RTV on the ceramic seal and the tin cup just to be safe. Some of the cups have been a lil loose and hate taking chances!
 
Same here, box was in good condition, string was tied around it, no tape. Had to show ID at post office and do some signing. Parts inside were taped together but I just assumed that Doc did that part. Other than that, no damage and everything is there. Thanks. Later.

I think it's more of pull the pump and find out. I've seen 2 different setups for the 900 and I think I have a pump from a 1000. Some parts are the same, some are not. Later.
 
Looks like the water pump on my son's project needs rebuilt but don't have a press. Was thinking about pulling the one off the parts bike and trying that, or should I just have it rebuilt?
 
Rammy, unless it's in really bad, corroded shape, you may not need a press. I only needed a press on one of the ones I took apart and it was the oddball version where the inner race of the bearings IS the impeller shaft and it's just one long bearing. If you try to take it apart without a press, just go slow and easy - patience. Is it leaking oil or water or both? Later.
 
Is the water pump on the 1986 ZL600 the same as the ZL900 or the ZL1000??

Different part numbers on the zl600 for the water pump:

86 zl 600: 49044-1054

85 zl900: 49044-1058

Yeah, could be that just the inlet and outlet pipes are different? Maybe just the housing is different? I would be curious to see the difference too. Later.
 
It looks like it is leaking both oil and water, so going to take the one off the parts bike and look at it and if it looks good, replace the o-rings and go from there. Got side track with replacing the front wheel this weekend, since I knew the front forks, calipers, rotors etc weren't stock, but according to my son, who got the new tire and pads, that the front is off a Yamaha. Had a heck of a time with the brake pads on one side and still a little tight but looks like it is going to work. Much beefier than the stock Eliminator front end.
