airbox rubbers

I found a way to soften them pesky airbox rubbers! MEK will soften em up almost permantly, just don't put em in liquid MEK or it will melt em! I used a quart jar with a block in the bottom to keep the intake boot out of the liquid MEK the fume's from the MEK will do the job over night or sooner just keep an eye on em. This worked on 27 year old KZ1000 boots very well made em soft an almost like new!!

...hey that's a neat trick. Must remember to make a note in my service manual.

Just a point on safety though, before anyone uses MEK they should read its MSDS ((Material Safety Data Sheet: http://www.americhemsales.com/MSDS HTMLS/3058fgvs.htm). This stuff is not good and must be treated with respect. The Australian government was so concerned about it that last year they paid me AUD40,000 lump-sum ex-gratia payment (tax free) over concerns about my professional exposure to this (and other chemicals) during the late '80s.

Hey everyone- Just picked up a 1996 zl 600-this thing is sweet!
I'l glad to find this site here too!

I do have aquestion about idle- I cleaned my carbs the best i know how. Changed the fluids, plugs and gas/oil filters and vacume lines, check for holes in my boots- The bike fires up only when the choke is on- then will **** out fast after its turned off or you let you hand off the throttle. Does this sound like a jet problem- maybe the pilot jets?
If so where are the located if your looking at the bottom of the carbs?

Everything else seems to be working great on the bike- it only has 3700 miles :dancingfool: - i dont think there could be anything more serious wrong.
Thanks!

that sounds similiar to the problom i had with my ninja ! pull the carbs off again, & make sure the jets are super clean. sounds to me like your idle jets are still pluged a little. they are the smaller jets located next to your main. CHRIS

Maybe the idle adjust knob on the left side of the carb bank needs to be tweaked a bit. Clock wise increases the revs a bit (I think) and counter clock lowers them.

As Chris said, you can never be too meticulous when cleaning your carbs. Clean them, then clean them again. Doesnt take much to clog an idle jet. When I cleaned my carbs first I just laid the parts on an old newspaper in my workshop and my workspace wasn't really as clean as it should have been. Second time around (after i had put them back in and the bike ran like ****) I took a pane of glass about 2ft X 3ft, cleaned the surface with acetone, and as I stripped and cleaned the carbs, I laid the bits back on the sheet of clean glass. No fear of dirt there. Put the carbs back together and she fired up and ran sweet. Gonna use this method again, if only for peace of mind...

Have you changed your inline filter between the fuel tank and carbs? If there wasnt one fitted, it's a really good idea to fit one.

3700 miles....! that zl is almost a virgin, nice find!

Oh, and by the way, welcome to zl-oa!

OOH CRAP ! dont know where my mind is today ! i forgot to welcome you to zl-oa ! WELCOME BRO !!!!!!!!!! CHRIS

I had the same problem after cleaning my carbs. Turned out I had created a couple of vacuum leaks around the carbs during the re-installation (a misaligned boot, a cracked vacuum hose). Replaced the hose and sealed up the carbs/airbox tight and she ran great. Good luck.

Hey Welcome to the site!
Not sure about the ZL6 but my 1k is a scold blooded as they come. I have to warm it up for a good 5 min b4 she wants to run right.
All the above ideas are solid. Vacuume leaks are often the culprit!
Also, it wont hurt to cut off a bit of both ends of the plug wires to ensure a good connection.
Good luck!

WELCOME zreed.....I bet the carbs are still dirty as well, but giving EVERYTHING a solid once-over to make sure all is right...
And again....WELCOME!
moab...

Hi and welcome to the site.

Just for thouroughness (is that a word?) does it run with the gas cap open? Others on here have had problems after the tank breather became blocked and gave symptoms similar to the ones you describe.

Other than that..,.....what all the others have said

Welcome zreed258

bassically ditto on what everyone else has said. You have 4 carbs and to me that means the chances of something going wrong are at least 4x :D

Being the lazy individual that I am I used to take off the air cleaner, rev the motr and put my hand over the opening of the carb when I closed the throttle (creates HIGH vacuum signal in the carb), sometimes this may dislodge and junk in there, It may not however and will not work with varnish just small debris.
