oil by-pass mod. completed

I don't mean to be dense but by standoff do you mean the small support on the original that seems to be keeping the tube slightly lifted off the screen screws? Or am I to do something else.

Thanks for the welcome! I joined this site the day before it blew up, 10 months and deep depression later I got my act together and it's game on now.

yep, thats what i mean by standoff. Helps to have a spare motor with the cltch out to know how much of a stand off you need. That is what holds the end of the tube up in the main bearing cap. Also it has a rubber block to cushion it on the bottom of the oil pan. If you would like a phone call send me a pm.

Mudrunner: What do you mean by oil pick-ups, and do you have a part number so i can try to get a look at it so I know where it goes?
"I used the ZG one I had because they are shaped like a funnel.....I thought this one would be better to use because it can pickup more oil instead of the restricting one from the ZL's"

It's the tube with screen that picks up the oil from inside the pan and delivers it to the oil pump itself. Let me go see if I can find a photo...

OK...I borrowed some photos from ebay for you. Sorry I don't have part numbers...But I can tell you this:

ZL900 and ZL1000 used metal pickup tubes with a flat shaped pickup.
1995 ZG1000 Still had this metal type being used.

2001-2006 ZG1000 (concours) has the newer plastic funnel shaped pickup I was referring to...so you should be able to buy one on ebay or go to kawasaki.com to get the part #'s you need.

ZL900 (see how the metal part going into the plastic seems to be flat.

Ohhhhh that thing! Rad! ok, Well i checked it out, it's the same part number, 49065, it's been used in multiple bike models so it oughta be really easy to come across. Thanks for the help guys!

"KX450 - neighborhood tormentor" :laughing7:

Good one - I need another big single.

Time to post up the oil mods done by Gremlin and I to my ZL9 Swap bike. All we are doing is increasing volume and pressure here.

  • Enlarged and contoured oil passage in oil pump plate where it flows from the filter bolt
  • Shortened filter bolt 1/8" and drilled out almost to ball seat to 1/2". Also opened side top holes to 1/2" and replaced filter bypasss spring with a bigger/stiffer spring.
  • Drillled ends of I-Tubes to remove extra pipe material
  • Re-made J-tube out of 3/8" steel
  • Centered up hole in the #4 main bearing cap
  • Replaced pressure relief valve with a newer ZX11 part# 16130-1058
  • Replaced the 2 drain plugs with Bacchus' heavy duty drain plugs
Gremlin did the same mods to his as well. He reports that the oil pressure is up over 60psi @ 4000rpm. Stock specs are 38-47psi @ 4000rpm

Nevermind....got it all sorted out. Definately going to at least drill the I out. Don't have the access to CNC to go further. With the SS

Is the I tube part number 32033? When you drop the oil pan, can you get to this? Also, how is it secured? When you re-install, do you fit it into the oil pan, or does it connect to crankcase.

What I am asking at this point is, if you use the SS filter, can you disgard the cap which covers up some of the filter? Should I drill holes in the cap to make it flow a lil better? With the toughness of the SS filter, I would think that you can just disgard the cap/cup. Any thought? Thanks as always.

The I tube is held in by 4 o-rings, 2 in the crankcase and 2 in the oil pan. Pretty sure you have to put the I tube in crank case first.

Bacchus would be the one to ask about the SS filters. I haven't read up on them at all. Have not heard of anyone leaving the fence out or modifying it with holes with either filter. I would search out the zrxoa, bigbikeworld, and other sites that share similiar motors and see what you can find for oil mods there too. I got mine from the BBW, if I'm not mistaken they were from Andrew Bennett, the dude that sells the starter chain tensioner mod on eBay. I'd like to hear his feedback on the SS filters and removal or modification of the filter fence.

Big Beautiful Woman??? :rotf:

Well, after reading for almost an hour, have come across some very interesting information concerning this SS filter. I don't want to comment on what I found...boy would that open up a can of worms.

Emailed Andrew and will anticipate a response within the next week or so concerning using/disgarding/modifying the oil cap.

Anyone got a pic of this on the pan? Also.....I'm trying to make heads/tails outta the yeller part. Do you unscrew the metal screen and plop this is. Also, what Y do you block off when you do the external bypass. Also, does the oil pan need to be tapped to make the external bypass work? thanks

I dont have any pics of that installed. It just snaps in place in the I-tube. The metal screen isn't removable on either.

I dont like the external bypass. If you are creative enough you can remake the J-tube out of 3/8 tubing, this and the drilling of the main bearing cap, contouring of the pump plate, shortening of the bolt and the higher pressure relief valve will bring the pressure up nicely.

I think i'm going to install the zg1000 oil pan and cooler. Oil pressure drops enough for concern when the oil temps get high.

If i'm not mistaken the external mod uses the secondary side of the oil pump that feeds from the sump. This sump oil is unfiltered when delivered to the main bearing cap.
