One more attempt to get this running correctly

Sorry, I haven't been on here in awhile, will have to learn more about the new "owner's of the site". But my 2 cents on your issues. I had a similar problem after getting my bike back from a "shop" and it ran lost power at highway speeds. Found out they pinched one of the vacuum diaphragms not allowing the needle to fully open. But before purchasing individual parts to fix, I figured out that the carbs on a zg1000 Concours are the same other than the throttle and choke bracket. I found a set on eBay and swapped out the brackets and eliminated (pun intended) that issue. I sent the original to old school to have him rebuild. I recently replaced the clutch switch, which didn't cost too much, since I didn't like the feeling of pushing the start button and nothing happens. I only ride the bike a few times a year, since I spend more time on the California 1400, but tell myself to get on it more because you just can't explain how much fun it is to ride.

Can hardly blame you for jumping on that beautiful Cali. The rubber all looks good, I will have another attempt with some fresh gas soon. Nice seeing you again Rammy.

For clarity, he is working on a ZL1000. It uses 34mm carbs as opposed to the ZL900 and ZG1000 which use 32mm’s

She warms up then starts dying. Much like an out of gas situation but it's running on prime and there is fuel. Sounds great till she don't. Battery is 12.5 before starting and 14.6 when over idol. Pick-up coil? One of my COP dropping out? So consistent on when it gives up the ghost.

I don't think COP, it would run on 3, just not well.

I think test the COP 12V feed and work my way back. Where is the motor ground, is it the starter wire?

Kickstand switch is operating, it was a loose plug at the kickstand. Im leaning towards the pickup coil and will test it room temp then heated with a hair dryer. Wow, Genuine is $225 but i won't ever have full trust in a cheap repop.

Of all the parts that I have, can’t believe I don’t have one of those to lend you to see if it makes a difference.

I appreciate that. It should be a simple resistance test. It is so consistent when it cuts out, happens before the fan even kicks on. Set up the meter, get out the hair dryer and watch the gauge. If that is the issue, it started failing gradually because it acted up at a constant cruise speed now it runs till it warms up then sputters like an out of gas situation and dies with no good restart until it cools back off.

Thanks, I will let you know what my testing yields. I will try to get some time to spend on it this weekend. The grass is on steroids right now and I am going to pull the stang out of the corner and give her a bath this evening.

The meter told the tale. Front pickup bouncing from 6 to 0 to 5 drops to 0, looks just like the bike was sounding. Good video from a Connie rider. RJ, PM or text when you get a chance if you can part with yout spare otherwise I will be picking up a new OEM unit. Its getting time to wear some whiskers off these tires.20260515_182444.jpg20260515_182435.jpg20260515_182433.jpg20260515_181703.jpg

:hello: I found the used ZL pick up coils. I found them in the last ZL parts boxes. LOL!!! I have 25 white 7"x 5"x 3" small shipping boxes that I keep small OEM ZL parts in. I have a new set of pick up coils that I bought from partzilla 12 years ago for $100. They now go for around $226. 59026-1061. __________________________ 20260518_092552~3[1].jpg

Thanks RJ, I bench tested the pickup coils and they were good, I will get your check in the mail tomorrow. Bought a brand new battery and fired up fine...then dies. Fed up. What could be progressively dying, first it was @ cruise speed rpm cutout, then runs till it's warm then dies wouldn't restart but would fire on jumper box. Now good battery fires right up good throttle response but dies before fully warmed. I think it is pissed about the road king and is destined to sleep in the back of the shed and forgotten about

Wasn’t there something about the 1000s junction box that the soldering needed to be redone? And did it ever run right in COP?
