ZL600 ZX600 Hybrid Streetfighter

Hey Guys,

Just completed my winter project, I put a ZX600 ninja front end on my ZL600, clip ons, antidive and dual disk setup. Check out the pics in the gallery and let me know what you think. Do not fear Spring is near....

Looks good. I dont suppose that you could humor me with some more pics of the controls and upper handlebar area could you?

Thanks Joker,
I will pull it out of the garage tomorrow and get some pics of the Triple tree and controls as well as the headlight.

You put the gauges back on it yet, or are you gonna use Ninja gauges?

I like the clean look without the gauges, as for speedo I am looking onto electronic or maybe even an ultra small gps like a garmin e-trex that I could remove when parked. I have had the bike for eleven years and wanted to do something different with it. I have kept all the original stuff to return it to normal if so desired.

Well that's a good plan, once you squirt the fender it should look better, but the Ninja front wheel really clashes with the look of the bike. Maybe if you have the fork legs polished & shape the fender a bit, it might help the look if it.

Fender painting is in the works, as far as the wheel, I dont mind it. It has a similar three spoke pattern, although it actually has six. And the dual disks fill in alot of the wheel, and when I am moving no one will know. I am anxious to ride it and see how the bike handles, brakes etc. etc.

What year was the ninja and how much of it was actually a "Bolt On"?

I got the entire front end off of an 85 ZX600 on e-bay. The steering stem was a perfect match, I just pulled out the original unit and slid in the ZX front end using the ZX hardware. I had to fabricate the headlight mounts and reroute the control cables to better work with the lower bars. The fork tubes are the same diameter so I will be able to swap the old upper tripple clamp and handle bar setup If I feel like it. It was fairly cheap and really easy to do.

Lookin good, lookin good...... That's the spirit, I feel everyone starting to come out of hibernation slowly but surely.

When I swapped over my front end, I had to fab my own upper triple tree, incorporating part of my old one, drilling it for my yoke-mounted GPR stabilizer & eventually for whatever risers I end up using. This allowed me to retain my headlight, turnsignal & gauge mounts. I had to use the original 2001 GSXR 1000 top yoke nut & fab out a brake combination valve mount. I also had to use a 1995 GSXR 1100 17" front wheel so I could use the speedo drive & used 2003 ZX-12 front rotors to clear the speedo drive & 6-piston calipers. I also had to machine the 1995 axle to work on the newer fork bottoms & machine brake caliper spacers to center the rotors plane of rotation in the calipers.

Wow, I guess that pretty much rules out the dealer for replacement parts. When all is said and done your front end will be worth more than the rest of the bike:) Sounds pretty sweet USD forks and monster brakes, have you had it on the road? Any big difference in handling with the smaller front wheel?

Not yet, getting anxious tho.

Was 55 Above zero, haha here in Wiscosin this weekend and I was able to take the scoot on a test run. It was great, the handling was quicker yet stable with the 16" front wheel and the dual disk brakes were a big improvment over the single stock item. The clip ons were not bad either, actually more comfortable than the superbike bend I had on prior. I can't wait for more warm weather.

I think it would be great to have online meetings for all of us ZL enthusiasts, check out the Poll, and see what works for everyone!
Post up times (example 5-7 pm) and I will try to help co-ordinate online meetings, if it's ok with our fine Administrators & Moderators, that is...
Thanks alot ZL fans!!!
