Fuel filter location

This may sound stupid- Where is the fuel filter located on a 1996 Zl 600?

Also (this is the second stupid part) i had the tank off and was dumping cleaning out the old gas, i noticed a small plastic piece about 1/4" in diameter by about 1" long with a fine mesh on the sides laying in the grass. Is this my filter? It may have come from inside the tank or from the petcock.
Thanks

Hello, Not sure on the fuel filter location, but the thing that you found in the grass is the filter that goes on the petcock and fits up inside the tank. This filter and a fuel filter I think would be considered 2 different things. A fuel filter usually goes outside the tank between the petcock and the carbs. Follow the fuel line from the petcock to the carbs. If you don't find anything other than rubber fuel line then you don't have a fuel filter installed. Later.

Would that little filter effect my bikes performance at all? should i put it back in? the bike is idling pretty bad

You should definitely put the filter back in. Will it affect your bikes performance? Yes and no. Without any kind of filter, you are allowing dirt/debris/water - whatever down into your carbs which can make it run like crap. It doesn't take much - I mean a very tiny piece of dirt or water will make it sound and run like it's on fewer cylinders than what it should be. Putting the filter back in won't solve your problems though - it will just keep you from making things worse in the long run. I would start with cleaning the carb bowls out - drain each one of them after you put in the filter, if it still idles bad or runs rough, you may have to pull the carbs apart and give them a thorough cleaning that way. Nobody else has chimed in here so hopefully I'm not leading you astray. Hope this helps some. You might try posting on the other site - there's more knowledgeable people/traffic there than me - hahaha. This is the site www.zl-oa.com
Later.

Hi ZREED258,
I agree with Jarney, the thing you described is the fuel filter that sits on top of the petrol tap and screens debris out of you tank before it gets to your carbs. If your bike is idling badly, it is likely some crap has already got through !
Clean as advised and fit an in-line filter as well as re-fitting the original.
zl-oa is a good and active site. :D
There is still a great deal of information on this site and a lot of very experienced and knowledgeable members, so it may be a good idea to keep an eye on both sites :D

I took this from the "Website related" section as I thought it needed a section of it's own.

Stormy

We have some good news for you all.

In collabaration with snakedoctor, we've come up with some additional choices in the patches and we have had the first of the zl-oa.com patches made by snakedoctors friend in thailand. Below is the thai version, which in my opinion is heaps clearer and I think probably better quality.

The other news is we may be able to give you a choice of bikes in the patch, the ZL900 or the ZL1000.

Here's the ZL1000 version.

Here's the ZL900 version.

Thanks for posting the pic of the patch Stormy and I'll be picking up samples on Monday of both the 900 and 1000. I am going to cover the costs of these being made.

My friend has to make 2 different blocks to make these different patches and I have to order a minimum of 25 of each to make it happen. I'm getting the bike done in a shiny thread so that it will show brighter. I'll keep everyone up to date on everything.

The cost will be less and I will work with anyone that wants to make multiple orders. So that there are NO problems, I will try to get the patches to you FIRST and then you pay. I don't have a lot of money and can't give these away but I am trying to make this as easy and affordable for everyone as I possibly can and that no one is left standing without the patch.

I haven't yet got a PayPal account setup in Thailand but I am working on that also. More to come after Monday the 3rd of Sept.

Please let me have some idea as to whether or not you like the look of the patch so far or if you have any suggestions.

Thank you,

SD.

i like it ! count me in for 2 (zl900) CHRIS

That new patch looks good, just checking with other ZL owners I know to see if they want one.

Oh yeah, how much are they going to be?

The price will be about $5 US with shipping included. I have to check with my friend again because I still haven't seen the sample yet in person. I will get samples of both on Monday and will go from there. This is as fast as I can go with it, sorry.

Don't forget the other members that had ordered in the other thread SD,(I'm assuming that you guys want the new snakedoctor version rather than my other version).
