Starter motor clutch...

For some time now, while cranking the engine over during start-ups, I have begun hearing what sounds to me like the starter motor developing a lot of slop, or play. Please enlighten me, is this sound typical, or is there another cause for this sound, above and beyond my paranoia? Could it be a worst-case scenario that definitely involves removing the engine and splitting the crankcase? Should the latter turn out to be the case, do you think I could make it through to the off-season, (i.e., winter), before repairs? What are the odds of this just being the starter motor bearings? I am hoping that there is not much of a notorious service history, with regards to starter motor clutch problems, typically speaking. Anyone care to give me his, or her two cents worth, while simultaneously getting me mechanically up to speed in this area? Anyone else ever need to address this area?

rattling sounds...

Let me see…”sometimes”, the starter motor, or the starter clutch, seems to be getting noisier, accompanied with a lot of rattling sounds, making me suspect that something is loose, or excessively worn. That’s my best description of the sound during cranking…

Hey Brian;
I've heard of this on a couple of 80's KZ 1000s before.
But, I can't recall it on my ZL9.

Honestly, she starts at the touch of the button. No cranking required.

I see that the individual parts are available for the starter.
Like ly the bushing that the gear drive runs on is worn.

How many Miles are on you bike anyway?

The speedo reads 11,000 miles, however, according to the previous owner, this bike is made from at least two Eli’s, and some parts definitely seem to have more miles on them, especially some of the bolt on parts. The engine itself appears to have low mileage, as was noted by the clean valves when I had the carbs off. Thanks for the input, and I am hoping the starter motor is the culprit, rather then the starter clutch. Realistically, it is hard to say what starter motor may have been used here, as many starters do fit this engine, yes? Maybe a used starter motor could end up being less costly then repairing the old one, yes?

Hey Brian, Could be the Chain and Tensioner on the Starter Clutch, Remove the Clutch Cover[You will need a New Gasket] and see if the Chain is Rubing the Clutch Basket. Probaly where I'd Start as a Culprit for a Grinding when Cranking, Later Rocky

As Rocky said, the chain and or the tensioner are most likely the problem. When one or both of these are worn, you will generally get a little "sloppy chain" noise (what ever that is!) in the low RPM range upon take off as well.

starter clutch

Hey Brian, I had the same problem with my zl 1000.Took it to the shop and they had to pull motor out to get to starter clutch. They discovered starter clutch chain was stiff and wore teeth off of sprocket.I had a hard time starting bike and when bike was running it sounded almost like a chain roll on right side. Whatever you do don't take it to trans am they suck. I took mine to paperio's in Roherstown he is excellent and only 38 bucks an hour. Later, fellow Dutchman Yo-Yo

Hi Brian

Take Rocky's advice and take off the clutch cover,my bike had the same symptoms and on removal of the clutch cover the tensioner was in 2 pieces

I had to drop the sump off to get the missing piece out;I dread to think what would have happened if that piece made it's way somewhere in the engine

Probaly should have been More Percise with My Reply[ Had a 2 Page Fact Finding Essay Wrote and got an "INVALID SESSION]If its the Tensioner and Chain Prob You can get to it from the Clutch Cover[ This is the Most Likley Culprit As the Clutch Area Was BEEFED up on Theese Bikes, PITY they Didnt Adress the Tensioners on theese Bikes??????I would Get it done Right Away or End up like Al with a Broken Tensioner, Later Rocky

Thanks for all the great info guys. This really helps me a lot, especially the cross-referencing of part numbers. I like the idea that in some cases, better, or more heavy-duty parts may sometimes actually fit these engines, as the factory may have, in some cases, made significant improvements to the less affective, or notoriously failing parts. So there are no improved tensioners for the starter chain on the Eli’s?

yes folks it happened again, last time was 1982 loosening a hydraulic line on an F111C and that took three months to completely recover. Anyway, I was layed up in bed with a slipped disc at L5/S1 (or so the CAT scan showed). Worst thing was at the time was I couldn't remember a good reason for it, (well not a reason that would put a smile on my face to make it worth while). I went to bed fine, couldn't get up in the morning. I did buy a small 51cm CRT TV (<20kg) on Sunday arvo and carried it upstairs at about 1700hrs, went to sleep at 2300hrs without any symptoms, go figure. I took a week off work, most of it stuck in bed. Of course the first concern I had was "this had better not have an adverse impact on my riding prospects".

Anyway that was 04Feb07 and now all is good, back on the velocipede and I'm going with a workmate (he has a 2006 Ducati S2R Monster, 1000cc) to the National Motorcycle Museum this Sunday, about 600km round trip. It has a purpose built complex that houses over 700 motorcycles, should be a great ride day.
