With bike not running sitting still, just sitting on it, should you be able to find all the gears? the only one I can get it to go into is 1st. Hopefully this isn't to stupid of a question.

No. The rear wheel has to be rolling to get into second. This makes it easier to find neutral when at a stop. Not sure how fast the wheel must be moving, probably doesn't take much.

Thanks I was just making sure, because I know on some bikes you are able to go through the whole gear pattern, just sitting still without the engine on.

Well on my 5000mi ZL1000 all gears. On my 30000mi ZL900 it made it to 5 gear then stopped. I shifted it back to first, now it won't hit second. The 900 has had trans problems for a while now. It shifted notably harder and louder when it made it up to 5th

The reason I ask is I can only get to 1st gear without bike running or moving. It will go in 1st and neutral only it won't go to 2nd or any others, shift pattern is 1 down 4 or 5 up?

machIV was telling me that some kaw's have a lockout, so it will not shift into second without motor running, but not sure if it apply's to our zl's ! CHRIS

I have found this issue on many bikes, not sure why but when not running you may not get through all the gears. Might have to do with the synchros or something....A tranny man I am not!

With an Avitar like that, I have to wonder!!:rotf::rotf::rotf:

Actually that was funny..........

Kawis have a positive neutral finder making it difficult to go into second without actually riding it. If you put it into first then start rolling it you can find second if you hit it just right. I did it after putting new gears in the tranny to make sure it worked, but was a pain. Hope this helps.

Tim, You have done the trans already? What were the symptoms and what did you replace?

My middle shift fork broke in half. Caused the gears to mesh half way. The rear tire locked up and came to a halt. Trans gears were trashed. I always had the problem with fifth gear popping out. The sad thing but good thing is it broke going easy into second. Earlier that day I was riding about 120 on a straight away. So if you have shifting issues I would go ahead and tear it down and replace shift forks and, check gears. The guy I bought the zl from bought a set of trans gears on e-bay just beacause they are rare, so he gave them to me with the bike.
