stick coils?

http://forum.concours.org/index.php?topic=66852.msg321427;topicseen#msg321427

Some of the same stuff as here... they are using C-14 stick coils... I'm not saying Mark is wrong, I just thought I'd throw it in there...:notworthy: I know JackS@#T when it comes to electrical:laughing7: It is worth a look.

One guy's selling the whole she-bang for $110 IIRC - coils, harness, ready to plug in and ride. Not bad, but I'll probably do it myself when the time comes. Right now my Dyna's are working fine.

Runs great. I would like to say there's a difference but there isn't

That's what I figured. If you have good coils and wires to begin with, there won't be a noticeable difference.

Some of the Concours guys are claiming "quicker" starting, less vibration :icon_scratch: , etc, etc. Of course, spending money ALWAYS yields positive results, right? :laughing7:

I used the ZX14 stick coils which are the same as the ZG14 and ZX10's. I'll be checking into a different one hopefully this week. I'll let you know if they will work after I buy them for another member.

well after checking out marks stick coil set up at mo-vmd I orderd up a set off ebay...very trick set up!

bacchus....What was the cost of the stuff to do the mod?

Do you have a link to the one you got off ebay?

Willy

ZX14, ZG14, and ZX10 Look it up on kaw they are x-ref'd. make sure you get the coil harness too!

Here's the pics of the sticks I wired up for bacchus. Just tie them up as shown and solder the connections. I used the red from one coil and the black from the other to make the connections to the existing zl harness. the remaining 2 wires get soldered together. Then give it a good wrap with some rubber tape. These ZX coils are already color coded so if you are careful and think ahead the primary wires will go color to color.

I just fired my ZL1K up today with the sticks, easy upgrade and seemed like she started easier and better throttle response!

I've read about this on the Concours site. Although any noticeable performance gain for this mod is arguable; the beauty upgrade value on the Eliminator is undeniable! I got to do this to clean up the under tank area!
I do wish there was a coil option that was even lower protrusion from the top of the head.

Updated post number 2 in this thread with all the details. Also copied that post to the tech library

Hey Mark:

I have one question...I have been working for an hour to get this straight. In your diagram, you have the black lead coming out bank one. In your pic, you have red coming out of bank 1. I went outside and looked at my setup and it's 1423...black, red, green, red. Should these wires be switched around. I have done alot of research with regards to series wirings and wiring backwards doesn't change anything, except degradation of the coils. Any help would be graciously accepted. I have a diagram from the zrx forum and it looks like your pic and NOT your diagram,.now I'm confused. heheheh...not hard to do.

http://www.zrxoa.org/forums/showthread.php?250746-Stick-Coil-Wiring-Diagram

Parts needed:

ZX14, ZG1400, ZX10 Stick coils and coil harness. Others will fit but I have yet to use them
(4) 1/4" male spade crimp on connectors.
Good tape. Scotch #33 or similiar
Soldering iron and solder

This is basically how it's done. Wire them in series like you would for 2 12v batteries in a diesel truck.

The stock zx14 harness has almost all the colors there so try to use them that way. When prepping the zx connectors, cut them leaving the longest tails possible on the coil connectors!!! It's easier to see in the first pic below the #2-#3 coil plug conns(the 2 that are wired closer together)You have a red lead and a BLK/GRN striped colored lead loose. Then the negative(black or green) from the first connector gets soldered to the positive on the second connector. I use a black magic marker to color in the #1-#4 negative lead solid, some harnesses will leave you with a WHT/BLU wire for that. I usually only have to solder 2 or 3 connections. 3 if the one red lead isn't long enough. There will be plenty of red wire leftover to add to the short one.

Her's for the #1-#4 coils

This shows the stock ZX grommet down in the hole just a tad. These will seal this way just fine I believe.

With the stock zl grommet trimmed and put over the zx grommet. I'll bet someone could find a better solution.

My pic is wired exactly as diagram. Dunno what you are talking about. Wire it as shown.

Hi Mark:

I'm stupid.....In your pic of 1-4, It looks like bank 1 is red, bank 4 is black. My box is BLACK 1::: RED 4::::GREEN 2:::RED 3...It's a 1997 ZL600. I having a hard time thinking that the red lead goes into the black OEM harness.
