Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

Yes, the tank must be pulled off. I just filled my up, cranked the bike with the gas still left in the carbs, run just a minute or two, shake the bike back and forth to try and get out any air, then keep filling until it's full, put tank back on and you're done.

I filled mine up and I did it slowly as to not trap a bunch of air...then when it was full to the top, I squeezed the upper hose several times to make sure air was out of that hose...I let it sit and settle and then added a little more...Then I started the bike up and let it run for a little bit with just the gas in the carbs...Then I set the tank in place and connected gas line and let the bike sit and idle for about 10 minutes..then rechecked for leaks and made sure my overflow tank was full and buttoned it back up....Went and gassed up and then rode it home...all seems to be well....

Hello guys, phill uk here just joined as i have just bought a ZL900 1985 and the previous owner had the oil leaking from the small hole underneath so he made up a small plate to carry the oil drips away from the exhaust so it didnt smell, BUT the plate caused the iol to be inline with the rear tyre path !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway i am after one of the full kits asap, so who the best chap to get me a set, i have paypal,

i love the bike its awesome and pulls well for an old bike, just have to sort this oil leak out , then get the carbs cleaned and set up, then shall work on the suspension as she handles like a lump of jelly around the corners i dont think they should be as bad as mine,
anyway hope to contribute to sight in the future,
any other zl owners in the UK

Regards Phill

Welcome phill uk,

Wuputt (US) would be the man to talk to about fixing the leak, phill uk, he rebuilds them and has a couple rebuilt spares sitting just waiting to swap with members I think, you send him yours for him to fix and he sends you an already rebuilt one. Not much down time.

There are a quite a few members from the UK here, acp (bristol), monkeyhanger, Blagada'n (ireland) to name only a few, there are so many UK members that are active posters here it's hard to keep up, so have a look around in the latest threads in each section, you're bound to come across most of them eventually.

BTW, fill out your location details in your "usercp" and the others will probably contact you...

Welcome Phill,
you can use the tech doc on water pumps to get you the seal sizes and bearing sizes - so that you can refurb your watewrpump. Once you pull the pump, you will probably be able to move the impellor from side to side - this means the bearings are shot!
Waterpumps and carbs are the most common sources of trouble on ZL's.
Enjoy the forum - and ask if you are unsure about anything - you wont get FLAMED here - best forum on the net! :)

Well yesterday I noticed that my waterpump (I believe) is leaking oil...I just put one on that I got used for $30.00....I did check out the impeller for play when I got it..it was tight and it all looked good...Replaced my pump with this one a little over a week ago and it was good with no leaks...Now I am leaving a puddle again and it is smoking off the exhaust...

I wouldnt say that, but nothing like sitting at a light and have a guy on a harley pull up and look over and say "hey did you know your bike is smokin" and I have to say.."yeah, I know...it is an oil leak" and he says "I thought you import guys always laugh about harley's leakin oil" then he looks down at his bike and shrugs his shoulders because he aint drippin oil and smokin....

Ofcourse I get the last laugh as I smoke him down the road...

he he he he

I know....I put my foot in my mouth...I was frustrated at that point....I will never live it down...but....oh well...

Ok, here we go again......Looks like I've got the dreaded oil drip from the water pump. So here go the questions ....hahaha.

How hard is this to do ?

Any update on the parts? Where to get them, anything else you would have done different/added/ etc.

I plan on going ahead and doing everything as long as it's apart and it's still cold out. Wuputt is not yet set up to do the pumps so I guess I'll have to tackle this on my own - ahahaha.

Water Pump o-rings
Edelbrock Gasgacinch (mark's fav)
Copper RTV
Oil Seal 12x28x7 TC
2 Bearings brand we used INA Part# 6001-2RS 12x28x8 Double Sealed
Coolant (engine ice as rec by Dale Walker)
1/2+/- qt oil

easy as pie!

You don't have coolant leaking which is a good sign that you can re-use the mechanical seal like I did.

I have yet to get a concrete source for the mechanical seal.

Anybody that has done this know how strong the press needs to be? I don't have my pump off yet so not sure where everything goes as far as what seal/ o-ring goes where. So which one is the mechanical seal? Thanks.

So depending on whether you have coolant or oil leaking out the weep hole determines which seals need to be replaced?

I see the following part numbers:
92055A and B and 671 - all are considered o-rings that I'll need?

I bought an o-ring kit off of eBay,, but that was a long time ago. I'll see if I can find any data.

The mechanical seal goes on the back of the impeller.

Call wuputt on the press. I don't think you need much!

Hello mate,
yes i would be very interested in a supplier for the O ring as mine has the odd oil drip,
good luck regards Phill uk

Check with Wuputt or Lowlife as I'm pretty sure I came up with everything needed to do a rebuild on the water pump. I can get more if anyone is interested.

What is the part number for the mechanical seal SD?. I'll bet I can source those in Akron
