Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

A good tech article there mark,

I'll have to do mine one day, in need of some cash to buy the seals from a local bearing suppliers. Mines just a little oil weep, it drops a single drop of oil on the deck after a good ride, so I can live with that for the moment, if it gets any worse though, I'll have to pull my finger out and do it, but it seems like I've got to buy a press though. It shouldn't be too hard to make one, by looking at wuputt's press though.

Mick.

I thought of a benchtop style press, but it seemed to take quite a bit to press it all apart

ok, i disconect water hose from reservtank and put it in water, start engine, at first time bubbles go (were in hose) and when engine warm up there gone antifreeze, i give a gas more - no bubbles, think gasket and head okey,
(yesterday when i try start engine from hose gone water, today it looks right, i dont shure about cap)
i remove pomp

i see it oil around, but how water go in crankecase??

Wold, I've been very busy lately but I can get the seals and and o-rings, I just can't do it quickly. I will check back into it when I get some other things sorted. If you have problems getting them, let me know.

as you know i bought another one ZL900
this one stay without work so long
i change antifreeze to water for wash the system
it was look like brown water with corrosion
okey
i wash it 3 times with fresh water and last drive from waterpump flow water with pressure
like fontane
master that repaired my last pump sad that long time staying very bad
and now i know it :!:
and fresh antifreeze are better than old :D

Does anyone know how much pressure is needed to press the bearings in and out?
Are we talking 2 tons / 6 tons more / less?
I have a small vertical pillar drill that I could try but am not sure it will be strong enough?
Whay about applying a little heat to ease the process?

i dont know how many tonns, i saw all proces, i think old man use press without indication
it was without any heat
just when he glued water seal cup to propeller he put it to lamp - but it was full rebuild

I found the seal. It is a bit pricey (about $6.50) compared to other seals but I bought a few anyway. I'll be doing mine today. If you notice in the picture, there is another seal on the left that wasn't included in the box but I bought a few anyway of that size. I bought enough to do 2 extra pumps plus an extra 2 of the hard to find seal.

Just rebuilt my water pump yesterday and it turns out the seal on the left side in the picture is not needed and has been removed from the list above. Also the price on one seal was wrong at $7.50 and has been changed to $6.50 which is the correct price.

It wasn't hard to do the rebuild. The hardest parts of the whole thing was getting out the old parts and then when putting the oil seal back in that joins the 2 halves of the pump itself to stay in place. Send me a pm if you want these parts.

Where did you get your seals from? I think I need to do the same thing.

i just sent the waterpump from dad's (marty) zl to wuputt for rebuild. thanks for offer SD ! CHRIS

No idea who manufactures these seals as there was no company name on the package. I'm just glad I got my pump done for my bike and if you guys don't want them, then I'll just hold onto them. I'll get past it, not a worry.

Just went into Bangkok again yesterday as I had to replace the small seal that goes behind the impeller as the one they supplied with the spring seal was the wrong one. Got everything sorted now and will be sending 4 complete sets of rebuild parts to Lowlife and some of the parts to Wuputt.

I can't cover the money to pick up multiple sets of these or even the patches or stickers you guys might want. I have to order in bulk to get the prices I get but I can't afford to sit on extras of these things until they sell. I am working on my own PayPal setup and should have it all together soon.

Thank you,

Doc

I just replaced my pump...QUESTION....

I am assuming that the gas tank has to be pulled off the bike in order to fill the cooling system? Is this correct?...What is the easiest way to do it and check it and assure it is full if the tank has to come off? Keep pulling the tank and checking?

Willy
