Today's Weather

I could not survive in that heat. Dry heat I can handle...
 
Dry heat we have here in Germany; waiting if the all-time-peak will be cracked today: max. temp in 2015 = 40.3 °C (~104°F).
 
After some crazy storms bringing flash floods we are having a great string of days for two wheeled action. Meteorologist said we were going to have some of the best weather in the country and he wasn't kidding. Couldn't have been better burning the tank of gas on some of the less traveled state routes in the area. Low humidity and mid 80's, beautiful wife on the back and burning up the road usually at 20mph over the posted limit. Blew through a tank and passed 30,000 miles on the odometer.
 
Stuck at work looking out the window, full sunshine and 71°. I should be out riding. Tommorow is same but a tad warmer. 3 days in a row of perfect weather...not many days of cloud free sky available in the burgh.

..back to work for me.

Hope everyone is enjoying their fall season. If ya get a chance, get that front end up in the air on a second to first gear shift for us who have to be a slave to the grind on days like this.

Ugh! Hitting the cold spell soon here, hopefully without the white stuff. Wish the Canadians would keep the cold fronts!
 
:hello: Here in Central FL we have cooled off a bit. During the day it's been in the mid 80s and in the upper 60s at night. We had our driest Sept on record. Biketoberfest is a week away. I'm not sure if I'll get to go. First time in 27 years that I won't be going.
 
2" of snow this morning and another salt coating on the roads. Hopefully this is it for the road salt for the season.
 
snowing here in Toledo at the moment. weatherman called for cloudy day ! Ugh ! hopefully it won't amount to much.
 
25 and windy at 8 am. Got an inch of snow yesterday. Geez, will this winter never give up? I can handle the cold, but we've had like 5 or 6 days in the 60s and low 70s in the last couple weeks, so this is hard to take. Then again, it's still March. March doesn't usually offer much in the way of good riding weather.
 
:hello: The only thing that I don't miss about PA is the road salt and all the mess it creates on the side of the roads. Oh!!!, also all the pot holes in the Spring. Then the pot hole and paving. Do they still use that tar and chip crap on the back country roads. That suff was a joke. Went for a ride yesterday in just a T-shirt. 76* here in Deltona FL. It is to be in the mid 80s the next five days. Then the dreadful 90s starts after that until the end of October. When I lived in PA I had a $200 beater rust bucket of a car to drive from November to May. I always paid off the State Inspection guy to pass the inspection on it. I hit a tree with it going backwards at about 30 MPH down a ice covered dirt road and the front seat pulled right out of the floor. Went to strighten the frame at my Brother Pauls Body Shop and pulled the frame right out of what was left. I never owned a new truck or car while living in PA/OH because they always rusted away way before 80K miles.

Tar and chip is still common, as is the tar snakes that are fun with wet roads. I sure am looking forward to a ride now that the ZL is running right plus this year I've got 2 other bikes that run good and my old mustang to choose from when it's nice out.
 
PA doesn't sound much different than IN. That chip stuff though seems to be better these days. At least a little bit. Applied to a horrible road it will actually end up being better, but not until some of the excess washes off. Salt is slowly consuming my beloved Silverado which at this point I guess will just get driven into the ground. The outside doesn't look too bad yet, but underneath, OMG, so crusty. It's insane. I thought about doing some bodywork on her to keep her presentable, but with the frame on the way out, it seems pointless.

For the last 25 years or more though the panels on cars are pretty damned rust resistant so you can get more like 15-20 years out of them before they start to really go to hell. To me the worst thing about living in the N is how every single car I've ever had and some have been so nice, has succumbed to rust eventually and had to be dumped even though for the most part they were still strong runners and everything worked on them. I've fixed the rust and painted a few, but it's a lot of work. Especially if you are going to take care of the undercarriage rust too.
 
:hello: In PA Dealers and Autobody Shops still offer undercoating. It has come a long way since the 70s. My Nephew Paul still does it at his Dads Body Shop for family and close friends.
 
The only problem with undercoating and I'm not sure you can do anything about it is it retains moisture as well as it repels it. So any voids at all will create pockets that promote rust. I've had 2 or 3 cars that were undercoated and they all rusted out prematurely. The one that really cracked me up actually was rusting around the Z-bart plugs in the door jams. Doesn't it stand to reason that for undercoating to be effective, it would have to be done during the assembly process while the floor pan was completely exposed?

Anyhow, I've not heard of anybody offering undercoating or getting it in the last 30 years or so. I've used POR 15 before with good results, but it is a huge job and to do it right you pretty much got to remove all the lines underneath the car. I thought about doing that with my trusty ol Chevy, but I don't think I'm up to it anymore.
 
To this day I know not one person who has been pleased with the results of undercoating, rhino lining, special paints or treatments with the exception of a few who had everything taken apart and coated, sealed then reassembled and treated with more after reassembly.

Myself if time would permit would tear down coat, reassemble, spray then every year or two lift, clean, touch up and spray lightly.
 
:hello: I have a RHINO spray in bed liner in my 2002 Nissan Frontier that is 12 years old. It has one 2"x 3" chunk taken out from a spade shovel and a few small ones on the top of the tailgate.
 
I should have been more clear, what I am talking about is folks looking for rust preventative as in use solely on the undercarriage.
 
Lots of people swear by fluid film. It has to be applied regularly though.
