What's fastest? Lets see how long..

Problem is that 50 comes too quick. Did you know that a modern zx10 can hit 95 mph in first gear?? Amazing. The zl is a great combo of long wheelbase, driveshaft and enough engine power to make a near perfect launch. I honestly believe if it had modern 150 + HP it would NOT be as good a stoplight bike as it is now. I know that sounds crazy, but a 5000 rpm launch with that much power would fry the tire and fry the clutch eventually. When I had my 1988 ZX10, that bike would constantly beat the newer 90 zx11 just because the bigger ZX was extremely harder to launch. I know , because i owned a few zx11's as well. But I can tell you that i agree with the modern bikes catching you pretty quick. Like you said, right after hitting the 65-70 mph mark, they fly by you. But its funny to watch how many times they try to match your launch! First smoking the rear tire, wheelie or bogging off the line . It drives them crazy. When i take out my Busa i don't even try to out-holeshot a driveshaft big bike. I let them go and do a fly-by with usually the front still off the ground. Thats all I can do!

For sure! On Youtube there is a clip of a ZL900 vs a ZRX1100. Now I dont know anything about the skills of the riders, but i believe that ease of launch advantage is pretty typical of my experiences...left to race you can see the ZRX catch up...but on the street another set of traffic lights would probably stop that happening..;)

My experience at the track this summer with my stock zl1000 and my fat ass, I was able to out launch everyone...yes everyone, except one guy, ZRXOA Bob who has a zrx1109cc, and is a very capable and experienced racer and goes about 170-180lbs. He got his all time best of 10.77 against me with a 1.78 60'. My all-time best 60' is a 1.76. If I could drop 40-50 lbs and get down to a lean 200 lbs I'm sure I could turn those into 1.6x 60'

mark,

my best launch is 1.8x !

1.7x is a **** fine launch!!! in fact I think if you check it out, you are the launch king. not even paul gets off the line like you....

I think that it is safe to say that the advantage at the line definately goes to the eliminators! the best thing about that is it puts the eliminator in the "catch me if you can" position, and the bottom line is if they catch you at the end of the track thats ok...cause the people and the stands are usually right at the line and people remember when you blow out the competition at the line. bottom line is the line is where the excitement is and eliminators deliver magnificently off the line.

burning the competition off the line really gets the competitions' feather ruffled too....lol even if they catch up at the end of the track chasing tailights most of the way saying to yourself ...oh sh*t this eliminator might smoke me...is a humbleing experience.

Bone stock zl1000, 240# rider, and here's the time slip(12.09 ET). You aren't gonna see a faster timeslip for a stock zl1000 in this thread and the vmaxes and v65's aren't gonna come through with them either, why? dunno,, all bench talk? :laughing7: (Learned this from all the smack talk from bacchus)

I by far am no expert drag racer, but for my first season, and my weight I feel i'm launching the bike close to it's full potential as the timeslip will show. Even the new V-max is launching in the 1.7x 60' times with professional riders.

At the track I have yet to see a V-Max and only 1 V65. The V65 was running mid 12's with a lighter rider. He left before I could stage up beside him.:dontknow:

As a zl900 owner I feel it would run probably close to the zl1000 in the 1/4 mi but won't know until I do a tranny swap. It would be worth it to me to convert it back to stock, fix the tranny, and test both bikes the same day at the same track.

Well hello guys, I heard about the ruckus over here from Texass so I thought I would see how fast the ZL's are. After reading through 13 pages I see only one time slip. (?) It looks like ZLMark's 1000 would be a very close race with a V65. I assume the 900 would be a tick slower. I only get to play on an 1/8th mile track but any drag race is won or lost in the first 60 ft (mostly). We can all shift them but it takes a little skill to launch 'em. I do enjoy surprising the newer litre bikes because they are harder to launch but they usually catch up by the 1/8th. I doubt if I can make it to Ohio but if there are and New England ZL's around, I plan to go to the 1/4 mile track in Epping NH next summer. Here is one of my 7.5 time slips. I'm positive I had a 7.48 around here but I don't see it now. If I wheelie too much and have to let off I still click off 7.8's. Peace. :headbang:

my best recorded 60' is 1.88, 1\8 is 7.51, and 1\4 is 11.8

best members time is 1\4 in 11.4x

it allways depends on the rider !!

I would like to see texas-ss-tornado bring his 3 bikes to the track and run each one seperately that day. Regardless of his skills, which I think they should be more than adequent. He is familiar with each of his bikes and his weight and skill will be equal on ech run. Same day, same weather, same rider. I know he would push each bike to its ability and the timeslips should tell the story, even if they aren't on par with the magazines. That would be awesome to film. John, if you read this, please think about doing this.

Welcome Evel fan!

Good looking timeslip there. So can ya tell us about the bike(stock, mods) and yourself(skill level, weight)?

Would be an awesome event to attend wouldn't it!

Amen brother The marketing of the ZL claimed the fastest 0-50 - it never claimed the best 1/4 mile so im not sure how people even began debating that a ZL is somehow faster at 1/4 mile drags...its not. If it was at the time there would have been a massive promotional campaign to let you know on no uncertain terms. But give me 1/8 mile and it might be another story... :)

This is exactly what I've been saying all along. I'm glad somebody else has stated the obvious. The big ZL wins the launch, and the more powerful bikes catch up and pass. That's real world in my street "racing" experience too. Now how will that will translate at the drag strip? Maybe the better rider will win? I'm not sure, but it's going to be a great time finding out!!!

Actually Paul still has me by .002 on the 60' :notworthy:

Once your competitor sees you smoke him at the line then the pressure is on and the mistakes are made

Seems you have the same problem getting a time slip posted that others can actually see when you post them.

Welcome to zl-oa!

Guess I'm gonna have to visit some of these other boards to see what kind of trouble we have stirred up so far with our little debate !

I am in PA and if you get anywhare close to me during rideing season give a holler and maybe we could do an in between meet and do some rideing or even meet at a half way track.

I have every intention of doing this, may bring all 4. I have a good friend with a V65 Magna, and it's stock like mine, and just as fast, he may bring his, and then I'll bring the VMAX, ZL9 and ZL1........We've got a trailer big enough for 4 bikes, so that would be the ideal situation. He just has to make sure he can get the time off, I can pretty much pick any 8 weeks a year I want to take vacation, so whenever it's announced, I'll get the time off lined up. He also has a wife that's battling cancer, so that might throw a monkey wrench into the plan also, but he wants to go. She's doing pretty well right now so it may be a go, if he can't, I have a few other friends I can probably convince to go, or my soon to be 18 year old son who just got that CX500 turbo as his first bike! Regardless, I will bring all of them that I can and run them all hard!!!!!! My son may even want to run the turbo for grins!!!!

My old Magna is an '83 bone stock original with 24000 miles. Carbs have never been touched to my knowledge and definitely not in the last 15 years. My skill level is watching Evel since the 60's, riding since '72, and raced motocross 4-5 years in the 70's. I have just started going to the drag strip a couple times a year 3 years ago, and a few more this summer. I weigh about 190 with gear. It would definitely be a good time. I hope to see some video if I don't make it.

I don't want to stir up to much crap around here since I'm not a ZL owner but I am a cocky bastard when it comes to bike racing lol. I always try to get people to put some money where their mouth is and try to make some easy money but pigeons are hard to come by. I do love it when the young guys come and look at my bike after a run and say "what is that thing anyway?" I tell them "It's a V4. They were so fast they had to quit making them." Ya see I'm a real ball buster lol.

Maybe the Magna, but the V4's are still alive and well!! Welcome Old Time Evel Fan! I always liked Evel and Robbie. Nobody has bigger balls in my book!

Balls of steel; poor Evel didn't have much suspension to work with. I was just a small kid when I first saw Evel and I assumed that's just how you rode a bike. I wheelie and jumped all my pedal bikes then mini bikes and then dirt bikes and now the Magna. No jumping with the Magna just wheelies. Thanks for the welcome guys sounds like a cool bunch and the ZL's are surprisingly fast too. I'll have to keep them on my radar in the classifieds.

Yeah I'm still a noob when it comes to posting pics. I think if you click on it, it will take you to photobucket then in the upper left you can zoom it in. Here is another practice try:
