Hold on to your hats gentlemen we have a new development in the world of the ZL.

Ok here's the story, I called up Jon Cornell from UFO performnace this morning to order the new 4-1 slash cut exhaust for my vmax project

The converstation quickly turned from the vmax, and my new exhaust, to the ZL series bikes and the fact that very little is available for the ZL's in the way of exhaust systems. Jon is very, very stoked up about the zl's and would like very much to produce a high performance exhaust system for our ZL's ... Wooooooo Hoooo...

So heres the deal boys, we got us a vendor that is willing to develop a product that many of us would very much like to have !! Maybe a bad Ass high performance pipe that actually looks like it belongs, and sounds nice n' beefy on the ZL.... anybody interested? I thought so...lol

As I would like very much to see this fly, I am asking for input and Ideas from you guys so that a system can be developed that will have maximum appeal. This is a rare opportunity for us ZL guys to get somethnig built to our specifications.

at this point all ideas are viable. Please submit your must haves, your wants, your "Pipe" dreams so that these things can be considered for incorporation into this brand spaniking new hot rod ZL exhaust pipe.

please let me know if you have an interest in this product for your ZL and I will get your name on the list so that when available you will be informed.

Here is a link to the UFO website so that you guys can take a look at the kind of products Jon is producing currently for the 'max. Check it out !!.

The pro-street slash cut would be my cup of tea.

My requirements for a zl aftermarket exhaust:
  • Accessibilty for oil changes
  • Ground Clearance
  • Close to stock appearance (Must fill the void between the muffler and foot peg bracket like the stock exhaust)
  • Not too noisy ie: D&D Street pack vs Race pack
  • 4 into 1 or 4 into 2 (I prefer 4 into 2 but if there is substantial gains then 4 into 1 is OK)
  • Removable Core

I also need to add, the price he's getting for the UFO DragStar is more than I would pay for an exhaust for the zl. We have 2 options for aftermarket exhausts now both less than $535.00

I could see more for an exhaust that meets the criteria in my above post, but not $460 more.

I agree.I think most of us are giving up a little performance, for looks. If someone made something that looked close to stock I think it would sell.$500 or so would be in the ball park.anything much moere than that.people would keep doing what they are.Saying how good the stock system looks . :detective:

Good point mark,

I guess as part of the wish list members should submit what price point would be realistic.

thanks for your input !

500.00- All comments above and to me its need to be damn near a ringer for the stock system. 4 into 2 period. I'll give up performance over a 4 into 1.

Hi Fellas would have to be 4 into 2 for me stock looking with a nice growl rather than the dissapointing stock sound. in addition would it be available for 750????

Can't give up the looks. 4 into 2 only. I really love the sound these bikes make so I would prefer something as close to stock sounding as possible. Otherwise, what Mark said. Later.

4 into 2 slash cuts - must do away with the Power Chamber - and even balance tubes.
As Mark said - easy oil / filter change, ground clearance and a loss in weight. :D

Nice growl would be even better - not essential - but increase in power would be nice. :D

must have list:
1. 4-2
2. slash cut
3. close to stock in appearance
4. improved exhaust tone / growl
5. street / track exhaust pack option
6. mount in stock location
7. oil filter access
8. looks / sounds badassssss!!
9. $500 price point ----probably will cost more IMHO..

what about gains in hp ??
personally I want 110....hey factory said it was a 110hp machiene and I want 'em !

what say you?

the 4-1 does open up the back tire area nicely... I think there is no question that the 4-1 set up has additioinaly power gains over the 4-2 ... if it had one nice big fat stock looking pipe with a nice big exhaust port, I might change my opinion on the 4-2 must have item. maybe we shold re-consider the 4-1 guys...

the blacked out headers / exhuast aint bad either !

thanks for the pic's wold

I hate looking at the left side of a zl with a4 into 1 it looks so naked like that!

Gotta say I like dual pipes better and the muffler area has to be filled out properly like the factory muffler does.

A few hurdles in making a attractive exhaust for the zl

  1. Frame down tubes are right where they shouldn't be DOH! They fixed this on the ZRX.
  2. Rear frame cross member power chamber support brackets. No way these can stay.
  3. Our lovely contoured foot peg holders. If the exhaust doesn't follow/fill this contour nicely then it isn't going to look good.

I don't see the head pipes being all that much different. Better flowing bigger. Some nice bigger polished tubing for connectors. And a work of art to get up around the rear frame into the slash-cuts. Chatting with paulfun and lowlife an x-pipe would help the flow and help get around the obstacles.

Let's stay on topic here please!

Its gotta gotta gotta look good !!!

this is the primary compaint and the reason I have not upgraded my exhaust allready. I dont like having to choose between performance and great curb appeal..... I want it all damnit !!!

wish list:
1. 4-2
2. slash cut
3. close to stock in appearance / big fat final pipe
4. improved exhaust tone / growl
5. street / track exhaust pack option or removable baffle
6. mount in stock location
7. oil filter access
8. looks / sounds badassssss!!
9. $500 price point ----probably will cost more IMHO..
10. adequate ground clarance

Still wondering about hp gains, is this an important element for you guys??? post up !

Slept on the 4*1 vs 4*2 thing ... you guys are right its gotta be 4 into 2. majority rules !

mark what is wrong with the frame down tubes? how did they fix on zrx??

why do the pc brackets need to be removed? would that require cutting them off the frame??

I was looking at the "loose" exhaust system that I have in the garage and I was thinking that stock wasnt that far off in terms of shaping of the pipes up to the power chamber, from there it sux, as they say in ohio...lol

maybe the group shold consider slip on option in order to meet the price point.. post up on this guys. full system or slip on at a better price..???

As far as the mounting of the mufflers in the stock location...yeah gotta have that ! I think that it is possible to do without the flow killing 90 degree angles. there are four 90's in the stock system. three of which are associated with the power chamber. one in the mufflers

if the mufflers were not tucked in quite as tightly as the stock mufflers are I think there might be enough room to make a slight bend behind the drivers foot peg outside the frame and connect up with a muffler located in the stock position. Im thinking that the muffler position would need to be an inch or a little more possible wider or untucked. I belive that this would maintain the appearance of stock.

Don't have a problem with slip-ons - Dale does some that allow the beast to breathe better and sound throatier. :D
What they don't have - is the slash cut sexiness of the OEM mufflers. :pale:

Getting rid of the junk under the oil pan could allow a deeper (GPZ900/1000RX) pan to be used, and open the way for a centre stand? :stir: :detective:

Also - finally, like Mark said - larger dia down pipes would help gas flow. :D
