Mower opinions?

Jarney, looks like a little too late but. Over here we have a chemical called 'Moddus'. Farmers use it to spray their sugar cane with it to ripen it. What it does is stunt the growth without actually killing the cane. Because sugar cane is a grass it will work on lawn as well. We usually take some home during the wet season and spray the lawn with it. Only have to mow once a month instead of once a week.

NOW THATS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!!

How about another idea here? Why not keep what you got and make the ground smoother. That is just a one time deal, you said the PO used to plow it. From many years of riding around on a hay wagon I can tell you that preperation is the cat's meow. You said a couple of times that if it was smooth you could be done in half the time.

Pay a farmer $1000.00 or so to work it up and smooth it down. Reseed with a nice Brillion seeder and good to go. Spend the rest on a toy!

Just an idea.

Hey it's never too late oldmate. Thanks for the info. With gas prices like they are, it might still be worth checking into. Later.

That may still be something I do in the future Wstar. I think I'll be ok for now though. Thanks. Later.

Any where near Warsaw? I grew up in Milford, guess that would be North East Central? My Uncle has a HUGE farm near New Paris. They have a bunch of old John Deere's that they have restored. I think they are trying to get one of every letter model. Think they have like 15 or so in various stages of rehab.

I have a 530 John Deere, 2 cylinder, hand clutch, all the modern amenities of 1959. Just put the battery back in from the winter, hit the starter and fired up after about 15 seconds. Amazing, never do a thing to it.

Looks like this only not nearly as nice, maybe some day. Don't know if this link will work

I guess I didn't read closely enuf, see you already bought something.

Yeah, thanks for the input though Wstar. I'm south of New Castle. Later.

Ok, mowed twice so far with the new mower - it's been raining every other day since I got it. First time, couldn't do the whole yard - too many flood areas with water still standing but I was mowing 5-6 inch grass down to 2 3/4 inch. With my old set up it would have been about a 4 hour job over probably 2 days using about 5-6 gallons of gas, with the new mower, it was 1 hour 45 minutes and about 4.5 gallons of gas. Second time mowing I was able to do the whole yard but had to stop 3 different times for sticks, and people stopping by (which is odd since I rarely get any company stopping by - must have been the mower - hahaha), anyway......mowed 4-5 inch grass down to 2 3/4 inch, old set up would have taken 2-2 1/2 hours and about 4-5 gallons of gas, new set up took 1 hour 35 minutes and 3 1/2 gallons of gas. Cool thing is, I can also wait longer in between mowings. Used to during a rainy spring I would have to mow every 4 or 5 days to keep up with it, now I can go almost 2 weeks between mowings if I need to and I don't have to worry about being hard on the mower or mowing every day for a week to get caught up. It'll take all summer to get everything set up on the mower (adjustments everywhere - 3 way sticks, 4 way seat, 4 position shocks, etc.) and get the trees trimmed up high enough so I can go under them easier. Very happy with it so far though - it flies and the motor never stutters no matter how fast I go or how tall the grass seems to be. Should save me a lot of time and gas in the long run.

Thanks again to everyone for their input, advice, opinions, etc. Later.

Neither, it's a side discharge. Mulching options and bagger options are available but I didn't have a use for them at this time. Later.

jmac, that would be nice but I'm not married unfortunately. Oh, wait, I'm always told that I'm lucky I'm NOT married.......?????? Hahahaha. Later.

It probably wouldn't make any differance. The first new mower I ever got,the wife want'd to try it out.I thought great. Then she ripped off the grass shoot pulling out of the garage.this was a 9x9 door, and a 50" deck on the mower. Then she proceded to bang the deck off of a few trees,I could not stand it and blew up.That was 8yrs and 2mowers ago.She has not even offered to mow the yard since. When I think about it now it is kind of funny, but at the time I was a little upset. She does use my old mower(the one she ripped the grass shoot off of) to pull around a wagon when she is working in the flower beds, but I took the deck off that one.So you would not gain much in the lawn care side from being married.

Jmac, ugh, I don't blame you for blowing up. Like with anything new, you try to be careful with it for at least a little while. Probably why my speeds and times for mowing aren't as fast as they could be so far.

Here ya go Kaw, not a great pic but.........

Just bought MY first z-turn....had to because the wifey had torn the deck just about off of the tactor....she also caught it on the swing-set and flipped it, luck was with us and no injuries.

I don't feel too bad now.I have a grasshopper.Once you get use to the zero turn there is no going back. That one above looks like a nice one.Plus the wife does not know how to drive a zero turn mower.

My wife is the only one allowed to mow with my grasshopper. Works good for me as I hate to mow as i do it at work

Hey guys,
sorry to bring this post back but had a question or two. I'm winterizing the mower this weekend. Seems the first thing to go on most mowers is the deck - rust, etc.

What's the best way to clean the underside of a deck?

I usually just use air to blow the grass off as best I can. I had an idea but it may not be a good one. Tell me what you think. What if I clean the bottom of the deck real good, then spray a light coat of that rattle can truck bedliner stuff (not the heavy , rough, gritty stuff but the smooth spray on stuff) on the bottom of the deck? I'm planning on doing some of that around the bottom outside edge of the deck anyway where it may rub against things and wear the paint. I did the underneath, wheel wells and lower couple of inches of body all the way around on my 07 truck when I first got it to help with salt, rock chips and hide tar - worked good for that purpose - but not sure about the mower.

Would the bedliner stuff help protect the deck and keep it from rusting over time or would it just make the grass stick worse?

Thanks for your ideas/opinions. Later.
