Questions for Dale Walker

Re: dents in exhaust

Moab and I talked the other night. We hope to see Dale Walker around here some more.

Question for Dale.

Maybe Dale can settle a on going battle: Which is faster in the 1/4 mi the zl900 or the zl1000?

I knew that question was going to arise! I would like to put this to an end as well,Dale. Whats your opinion?

tmdoth, this dent from lower part of shock absorber, i swear, i had them on ZL900 with supertrapp
i think they become when drive fast and swing arm made big moves on road irregularity
and when bike fall to side :laughing7:

Unfortunately I can guarantee the dent is from the bike falling...I was on it :(

am I right in understanding that the man is back??? this thread is alive once again???

If so, I would like to thank DW for the advice and input he has provided to up prior. Particularly the rotella oil recomendation. I have switched since then and have been 100% happy with this change.

we all have an eliminator, some have more than one, but none of us have ever had 11 or more operating at the strip at one time. that kind of "fleet" experience with this bike is extreemly valuable to us!

Thanks Dale!!!

I will be calling Dale after the Holidays on a personal matter (new mufflers) and am gonna beg him to return to our site for some more Q&A....Post 'em up while you can!

dale,

assuming stock bikes, and a "perfect" run, what would you predict as the 1/4 times for both the zl900 and the zl1000 ???

assuming "perfect" tuning what would you expect these two bikes to dyno out at in terms of absolute peak HP??

in earlier posts you've recomended the use of rotella-t, I belive 5w-40, I have used this and found it to be an excellent choice.. thanks!!
I was wondering what you belive the benifits of this oil over the competition is technically speaking.

Is there any chance that it would be possible for your exhaust systems to be produced in a way that more closely resembles the factory cans???

I have a friend who is a member here, his bike turns over fine with one spark plug removed, but will not when all are in place. He has removed, torn down and re-assembled this motor more than once and is not finding the problem, I know this is limited info, but could you make some suggestions on what may be the cause of this problem??

also wondering about main jet suggestions for zl9 with k&n, stock pipes. and additionally same bike with pods and performance exhaust.

thanks !!

THE MAN IS BACK!!!!
Post 'em up now and see how well we can pick this man's brain!
Thanks again for all you do for us Dale!

Hey Dale, thanks for helping us out here!
I recently mounted a pair of Trapps on my ZL1k, have K&N stock filter and ZX1000R cams in it. It runs out very well! My question is about the discs on the Trapps, I have only 5 per side. How many more should I buy and how many do you suggest starting with?
Thanks much!

Hi Dale,

I have a ZL1000 with the old Holeshot/SuperTrapp cans, K&N stock replacement filter, stock jetting with 2(?) shims.

If I install ZX900 cams, would the jetting or anything else need to be adjusted?

How would the cams affect low and mid-range response?

Thanks for your time

PS - I also have your ign advancer but have not installed it yet.

Hi Dale,

I am looking to pick up a set of Holeshot pipes soon (the satin black ones) and was wondering if you also sold individual sides as well as I dropped my bike on one side and only need to replace the left can (the aluminum ones). Do you carry any sorts of replacment parts like that? Cheers!

Dale, I'm looking to get a little more power, not asking for alot. I want to keep it stock appearing (exhaust etc) and my carbs run very crisp and i can get over 40 MPG when I drive it right and I kinda like that. I guess I AM asking alot. Don't wanna mess with the carbs or exhaust but yet I want more power, I WANT IT ALL!!! God I sound like my wife. Thanks for your patience Dale :-D

You wont get any power without messing with it sorry, its true there is no cake and eat it to Im afraid lowlife

Sorry Its hard for me to get back here guys, im super busy then i was called for Jury Duty last week. Two gang bangers shot a guy in a poker game dead in the driveway. I pretty much convicted them after they both staired down the jury pool and the judge let me off the case. 10 to 12 weeks would have closed me down also and I let him know it.

DW: I ran a 11.20 on a ZL 900 bone stock, i never ran the 1000, but they are very close really, though the 1000 makes more mid range. This really does not help the ET.

assuming "perfect" tuning what would you expect these two bikes to dyno out at in terms of absolute peak HP??

DW: Take a look at my dyno charts on the ZL-1000 with my slip-ons, then you can figure this out pretty easy.

Its cheaper .... Ha , the oil issue will go on until the end of time and i really dont want to go there. This is very good oil and a good value. I also use The X1-R product, again please take a look at my web site.

Is there any chance that it would be possible for your exhaust systems to be produced in a way that more closely resembles the factory cans???

DW:
No, the bikes are way to old and it cost way to much to produce a new design, I have wanted to discontinue these a few times, but i have yet to in fact. But if sales drop off more this summer they may be gone after that.

DW:

If the motor is free and the cam timing is set properly as well as valve lash, and it has good compression, it may be flooded with fuel causing cylinder lock, or if it does not turn over with the carbs removed it has to be electrical.

This means low battery, bad connection or solenoid or week starter

Be careful if it gets flooded with fuel it can bend a connecting rod trying to turn over it if back fires.

also wondering about main jet suggestions for zl9 with k&n, stock pipes. and additionally same bike with pods and performance exhaust.

Stock main jets with my jet kit and included timing advancer, i dont like to give out my settings or i dont have a kit.

thanks !!

Your welcome....... shorter next time ok

8 to 10 to let it breath with the cams

No , but i can re-skin a muffler and re build them say if you scrape or dent one badly at a good cost.

If its destroyed i can sell you a new muffler cheaper. My mid pipes are only sold with the set.

Thanks Dale :nike:

Quick one for you Dale.

I'm looking at getting pods and dynojetting my carbs, as I've had to get a new exhaust system.

Is it necessary to put an advancer in the bike as well, like the one you sell for it? Or is the advancer another optional add-on?

They like more timing so call and buy my timing advancer also

I also make a my stage two kit that includes it all

Cheers DW :nike:

HEY DALE,

is it possible to buy just the timing advancer ? if so, how much, & what are the advantages of having one on a stock zl 900 ? thanks, CHRIS

Yes I sell my advancer as a stand alone part, but you should do the rest of my kit less installing the main jets.

They are pretty lean stock and its good to do a minor tune up with the advancer installed.

A couple of questions for Dale - if he doesn't mind. :D

1) How much time does the electric shifter save on a run at the strip?

and

2) I have read - elsewhere, that having a bit of polishing done in the cylinder head can help tp reduse heat there. Is that true? :detective:

Thanks in advance Dale. :D

1 Depends on how well you can shift, but it can be a tenth or a half a second.

2 Wise tale , these motors dont have enough CR for that to really be effective. If you want it to run a little cooler, jet it properly, replace the coolant with Engine Ice and run 89 or 91 octane fuel.

The higher octane wont to a thing for power but it will run a touch cooler

Re: dents in exhaust

Hi there Dale, had a quick question for you. Took off the exhaust in the process of getting to the top end of the engine and was wondering while I have them off, can I get the dent on the left exhaust pipe pulled somehow? or is there a better suggestion? I would really like to keep them as they sounded great. It might be hard to see the dent, but is right up against the shock tower as that is what caused the dent in the first place.

I would appreciate any input you might have, and I can and will be posting more pics once I get back to my shop on the weekend. Thanks a lot.
p.s. really love the sounds these bad boys make, that and the fact that they maintain the symmetry of the bike with 4 into 2

I will need to re- skin and re build the muffler, I can do this for $125.00, including all the parts. This is close to my cost. I think i may still have some of those old logo plates ? Im not sure, thats a real old system.

You either have the clamp mounted wrong or the rotaion of the mid pipe wrong for it to contact the shock, you will need to re check all this

Thanks Dale :nike:
