with this info post I no long need to see if the Z1k coil will fit in the ZL right ?
Good question,, I haven't a clue what the difference is.

K-Ray,
if you can remove a stick coil from the Z1000 and try it in the ZL1000 head- that would tell us if the mod is an easy physical fit or will need some customising or not! :D

If you want to go ahead and trial the full mod - go for it! :cool10:

Well I have some bad news. I just went to the local cycle shop, Manuel Motorcycles to research these stick coils. The gentleman there had a few different sizes to choose from and compare to. They allowed me to borrow a gsx-r 600 stick coil (129700-4400 Denso) which measures exactly the same length and resistance as the zx14/zx10r stick and was the shortest they had. As you can see in the following pic they are way too long.

I made sure they snapped down over the threads on the spark plug tip!

{Edit} I have since installed these keep on reading further into the thread!

Any chance that there is a shorter plug to make up the difference?

Thats a bit of a shocker!
I wouldn't have thought that there would be about an inch difference betwqeen the cylinder head on the ZL and ZRX?
These same stick coils fit quite snugly - not flush but quite low to the head on thr REX :detective:
Don;t think it will be the spark plug, so will look out for a shorter stick!
Finding the correct diameter and resistance and one 4 inches long :detective:

Well we can always add resistance since we have to make a custom harness anyways. So just need to find shorter ones of correct diameter

Mark, just found this on another site -

The spark plug ends on the 900 and 1000r are different than the zx10/11, but I would be surprised if the spark coils didn't fit the earlier heads. I don't have a head here to test fit the 10r coils to. Worst case is that they are smaller than the spark plug well, so you might need to cut some rubber discs/covers that fit around the coils to keep the garbage out.

That may ressurrect this mod? :detective:

not sure what you are saying,, have a link?

After seeing the stick coils wth the gromments on them I decided to give this another go. The stick coils just barely fit in the #2-#3 cylinders, takes patience to get them in there but they will go in.....barely. The end of the stick will go past the tip of the spark plug and get sort of stuck between the plug tip and plug well wall. the trick is to center it up by wiggling it around and making the rubber tip pop over the plug tip.
I have to trim the stock ZL plug cap grommets to fit the coils and make up the harness. I'm using '06 ZX14 coils which measure out to 1.2ohms each with a '03 ZX6RR coil harness. I bought a 4 prong square male and female GM weather pack connectors to make up the splice into the ZL harness. You could do it many different ways but this is how I want it to be.
Will post pics when I get progress!

I like em!

Trim the bottom side of the inner grommet from the factory zl plug caps. Slide the Stick Coil grommet down to the taper at the bottom of the plastic where it meets the rubber tip.

Wire them as shown in series in the diagram, I used a square 4 pin GM Weatherpack Connector to hook up to the zl harness. The hardest part of the job is the #2 plug is a *****, once you get it centered over the plug tip you're home free!

so where do the 4 wires hook up and what impedence do we have to have for the 900? Got it on the length at 4 inches and the right size for the plug hole to close out water and trash.

If you use regular male spade connectors you won't
have to cut the factory harness for the coils, they'll plug right in.

The red, green, and black primary coil wiring is what controls the stick coils. Wire them as shown in the diagram. Those are the 4 wires!

My '06 ZX14 sticks are 1.2ohms so that puts them at 2.4ohms when wired in series. The ZL factory coil specs are 1.8-2.8ohms. As long as your total resistance is between 1.8-2.8ohms then you can use those coils. Most GSXR, Honda, and Kawasaki coils will work, but it's best to use the ZX/ZG14 and ZX10 coils because of the grommets. Just make sure they are no longer than 5" and the individual stick coil resistance is between .9-1.4ohms.
