stick coils?

You are over thinking this.

Forget about the diagram and wire the coils like I have shown in the pics. Put the spade connectors on and plug them into the primary wiring color to color. Look closely at my pics because they show 2 red, black, and green as included with the zx14 coil harness. Sit back relax and rejoice knowing that my pics are correct and if followed correctly you will have them properly wired and polarized!

If you can't follow what the pics are showing to do, you're on your own. I don't think I could make it any simpler without doing it for you!

Hi Mark:

Just tell me one thing and I'll put this to rest... In your pic of 1-4, What color is the wire coming out bank 4 and what color is the wire coming out bank 1. Looks to me that Bank 4 is black and Bank 1 is red. My oem female connectors on the coils are bank 1-black, bank 4 red. This is opposite of what you have pictured, or are you telling me to put bank one (red) to my bank one (black)? DC current can go either way, Are you telling me that it doesn't matter which way current flows?

Your OEM connectors for cylinders 1-4 are red/black. My pic shows that the stick coils WIRED IN SERIES are using the red from the zx14 harness on one coil and the black from the other coil. Doesn't matter which coil they come from as long as they are red to red and black to black and on the 2-3 cylinders green to green. These coils both fire at the same time. It's called WASTE SPARK. The only difference here is that you have 1 coil for each plug. The OEM configuration still is waste spark because both plugs fire at the same time.

Wire them as shown in the pic doesn't matter if the red comes from the 1 or 4 or if the black comes from the 1 or 4. What does matter is that the red comes from one and the black comes from the other and you hook them to the zl arness color to color. This way you will have the proper polarity across the stick coils.

I hope you don't have these problems changing batteries in your flashlights that have more than one battery :rotf:

In series circuits, the current flows one way. When speaking of polarity, when you wire things backwards, it's call reversed polarity, no matter whether it's the correct polarity or not...it's reversed. The ZRX forum about this talks about "Cycling" your plugs to avoid....degragation of the detonator, while the other bank degragates the other part of the spark plug. *you'll have to read thoroughy through the ZRX post to find this information. So, I'm going to wire my set up to have the correct polarity, bank 1 black, bank 4 red, bank 2 green, bank 3 red.

I would rather ask 1000 questions, no matter what the recourse to get the correct information.

Where did I say that polarity doesn't matter? It doesn't matter which coil has the red feed or black. The connectors and factory color ciding of the zc14 harness sets the correct polarity. You are still over thinking this.

I just wanted to do it right the first time...you just can't go to your local moto store and get these parts.

I don't mind the challenge, as long as I'm moving in the right direction.

Hey guys I got some ZX-14 stick coils & the harness and wanted to know if any of you guys have wired this setup up to a Dyna 2000 ignition?

I contacted Dynatek tech support & they say to wire them in series like you guys said with the usual pitch to buy their coils.

I'm betting the wiring setup is similar minus the igniter and I no longer have to use the coil wires in the harness but may still have to use the harness wire that provides signal feed to the tach. Sound correct?

Do they have a pdf of the instructions for this unit?

Seems like you should be able to hook up the dyna as if you're using stock coils and substitute the stick coils wired in series as shown in my pics. Let me know if you get stuck and I'll see what I can do.

Understandable. I hope you have this all sorted out in your head now.

Good Morning All:

First thank ZLMark for all his patience. Alot of these setups seemed to have the red, black, green, red configuration. I have the black, red, green red configuration. I wanted to make sure that when wiring these in series all currents run in the same direction....even though it doesn't matter per se. In the ZRX forums they delve into this ALOT deeper....ohms, impedence. Spark plug issues....even with correct current flow. I am documenting this completely with step by step instructions.

Yeah I just found the .pdf off their website. It removes the igniter & ignition advancer & wires direct to the coils with one lead going to key-on power and one lead going to the tach.

I just don't understand why the factory harness wouldn't be wired in series unless it uses sequential spark and requires less ohm rating that a std ZL that uses 3ohm coils.

I don't know if the Dyna2000 uses wasted spark in it's config or not. Dyna doesn't seem to interested in helping you unless you're using their coils. I guess it just didn't register with that a$$ clown that there was a reason I was using these stick coils in the 1st place.

This resulted in lots more room after removing the old coil frame mounts and installing a Canadian valve cover that doesn't use reed valves.

Got my ZX14 coils and wiring harness. I measured Ohms and all checked out at 1.5 on the nose. Couple of the tops of the coils looks a lil boogered, but if they measure the ohm's correctly, I should be good to go. Off to radioshack for the all connector goodies. I will post MY wiring harness...I feel like I have to do a good job..want to make YODA...AKA ZLMark pleased.:wav::walk:

I used 16 gauge, factory is 18.Final Harness.jpg

Wasn't that hard, your number one is red and mine is black. That's all you had to say...At least I'm intelligent enough to know that your diagram shows black number one and in your photos, it's red number one.

But are you intelligent enough to understand that it doesn't matter which one has the red and which one has the black?

I think everybody is numba 1 & numba from the neck up...:laughing7:

It does and doesn't matter....I just wanted to keep things as correct as possible, current correct and color coded correctly as, well as positive going to positive and negative going to negative.

You are right in that it doesn't matter.....your going to have to switch things around anyway, for spark plug issues. The insolater around the detonator will corrode one way and opposite way the other way around. (ZRX Forum)

Can anyone else look at their bikes and report back how their coils are colored coded. Coil on the left, 1,4 Coil on the right 2,3. Would help me understand and be of great help.

I learned so much on this project. I want to personally thank ZLMark. Mark you have been so much help with your detailed instructions and your pics and photos. As well as the URL's for ZRX forum. I thank you for taking the time to answer my posts. And you have been so patient with me. Thanks again. larry

Just so you know. You can send power to the 1 or 4 first and have it proper polarity. I have not read zrx thread and don't intend to. Why? Because I wouldn't wire them with reverse polarity.
