Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

Time to do my water pump.
I've had the minor drip for a while. But today after a spirited run on the long way home from work I noticed a lot of smoke rising from the left side. Black/brown fluid (oil?) pretty much running out of the pump maybe 2 drips per second and down onto the exhaust..
I just wanted to say thanks for the awsome tech doc and water pump discussions on here guys. I havent even taken so much as a wrench to the pump yet and I know exactly what's ahead of me...!

Do you know which pump you have? If you have the one with the big single bearing (no c-clip), I can't help you as I never got a sample of that for the parts. If you have the other one with the c-clip, I can get all the parts for that to do a rebuild.

The bearings are all the same. It is the inner spring seal that comes in two dif sizes. The oil seal goes out usually due to a ban inner bearing. If you are lucky, you can re-use the inner spring seal. I did that on mine and I believe we did on Marks too. So far, mine is good to go, that was two years ago!

If the mechanical seal is not expensive or hard to get, I'll probably go ahead and change it anyway. With the 1500+ mile scotland trip in August I think for peace of mind, having the pump in good shape will be one less thing to think about...
I'm glad the pump gave up now (a few miles from home) and not somewhere in Scotland!!
I have a few other jobs to get on with on the ZL anyway so now is as good a time as any to get on with it.

Kawboy and I have yet to find the mechanical seals, everything else can be found pretty easily. The oil seals and bearings are different sizes depending on which pump you have. Unless there is a 3rd or 4th style of pump out there - geez - wouldn't that suck........I've gotten a little sidetracked on this project at the moment with other stuff but plan on going back at it when I get caught up. Later.

If someone could send me a sample of the different seal, I can find it here. I have the pump that uses a c-clip on the shaft and the seals are available here.

Maybe someone can shed some light on this mystery. I find it difficult to imagine how Snake Doctor, in Thailand, can more "readily" put his hands on these water pump parts, and we who reside in the U.S. can not...? This doesn't make a **** bit of sense to me....(??).

don't want to quote you on stuff that you posted but it just means that a LOT of seals and bearings are made HERE in Thailand, can't get away from that. The only thing I need is samples of them. I have to make big sorrys to zlMArk on not getting the pod copies to him, I've had a lot on my plate for the last few years. 555

I didnt realise there would be a problem with the seals for this pump? Do kawa no longer carry the parts?
I have a local seal & bearing company here that I have used to buy mechanical seals for some pretty unusual small industrial pumps over the years. I'll be checking in with them to see about the seals for the ZL pump...

I am sitting with my box of parts and my dial caliper. I have rebuilt several pumps and all those and the three odd balls I have in front of me use the same bearing, universal part number 6001D
All the pumps use a C clip on the end of the impeller shaft under the oil seal which is also the same on all the pumps I have broken down. The oil seal is TCM part #12X28X7TC

I am looking at three pumps and 9 old seals. The old seals that I successfully rebuilt measure from 29.5mm to 30.1mm, these were replaced with the seals that Doc sent me. The other three pumps I have measure 28.3mm to 28.7mm, I tried forcing one of the new seals in but no way will they work!

Wu, I have that seal and I need to get rid of it - thought it would work on my pump, but I need the 30mm seal. I paid $17 incl shipping. These are on ebay, for the Honda CX500/650. Prices range from $22-40.

I guess I'll be looking for a new mech seal then...... lol
The outer bearing failed, the cage and balls lying loose in the housing... You can see in the top of the pic where the impellor fins shaved some metal from the inner wall... The outer bearing must have been fu@ked quite a while causing the uneven wear on the seal face...
The shaft is a little pitted but not so bad that it cant be re used again...
I guess I'll be looking for a new mech seal then...... lol

If Snake doc has sent the 30mm ones to wuputt before then I think we need to have a bunch of these sent over again - I could use about 5 or 6 of them - I'm in no hurry for now but I plan on continuing the search for these things. These pumps are a mess of various parts evidently. All my mech seals and Kawboy's mech seals are the same size. I have one pump that has 1 long bearing in it that is part of the impeller shaft. I'm goin to call up to my local seals & bearing supplier later this week to see if they can provide me witht the parts I need. They have a pretty impressive stock and they havn't let me down yet. If they can't find something that suits, I'll let ya know if I need some Chris, thank you.

Sorry for the delay in coming back to this. I had no problems getting the parts at my local seal/bearing supplier.
The lip seal and bearings are uber common parts, no problems there. He also had the mechanical seal in stock which surprised me! A "Trisun" ceramic mechanical seal 25.0/13.0 with a 30mm spring cup/graphite rotary. €14euro.
The guy is to come back to me with the manufacturers part number. He only had their stock number on his computer.
If any of you guys are havin a hard time trying to get the mechanical seals, let me know, I'd be glad to help.
