Tech doc discussion: Water Pump Seal/Bearing Replacement

Re: Time to do my water pump.

So let me guess?, You can't find/buy a new water pump anymore? Just asking- I'm not completley enlightened to the ways of the zl yet.

Re: Time to do my water pump.

Hi!

It will be fine to hear the part-number. I think it is an "TS FBW" or an "TS FBS"?

It's funny, in the current time here in germany demaged water-pump going to trash. Only the oil-seal will be changed. No one nows about the mechanicle seals to change.

Re: Time to do my water pump.

Sorry for the delay in coming back to this. I had no problems getting the parts at my local seal/bearing supplier.

The lip seal and bearings are uber common parts, no problems there. He also had the mechanical seal in stock which surprised me! A "Trisun" ceramic mechanical seal 25.0/13.0 with a 30mm spring cup/graphite rotary. €14euro.

The guy is to come back to me with the manufacturers part number. He only had their stock number on his computer.

If any of you guys are havin a hard time trying to get the mechanical seals, let me know, I'd be glad to help.

If you're paying 14 euro for just those 2 parts or even just the mech seal, you're paying too much, I can get all of the parts for a rebuild for $15 US. That's the 2 bearings, o-rings, mech seal, c-clip and the other seal you showed in the pic. I just don't have the other pump to get samples for.

You can buy a new pump Justin. I contacted my local Kawa sonofabitch stealers and cheapest quote was €160euro+tax ($220usd+tax) for a new pump with a 3-4 week lead time! I couldn't justify that.
So far I've paid out <€25 on parts and I'll have about 2 hours invested by the time its reassembled and back in the bike. I want to be rolling by Friday for a local run I'm going on, so time was a major factor for me.
By the sounds of it, Chris (SD) can get the parts cheaper by far.
(I'd have taken you up on the offer otherwise Chris! thank you.)

When can you get the parts for 30mm pumps?

tHANKS KEV, YES MAYBE SEE IF ANY OTHERS WANT A KIT TO MAKE LIFE EASIER FOR SNAKEDOCTOR

I need two sets - with the 30mm mech seal - thanks

Chris, before I assembled my water pump, I measured up the mechanical seal. If you need more, let me know.

MECHANICALSEALWATERPUMPZL-1.jpg

Lip seal (oil side) is 28mm OD X 12mm ID X 7mm

Bearings (qty 2) are 28mm OD X 12mm ID X 7.8mm

External Circlip - 10mm ID (nominal)

Sorry, I didnt measure the O rings, maybe someone else can chime in here if you dont already have them...?

I'll get on it next Monday. Is there 3 different types of these pumps or just 2? I seem to remember one posted on here that looked like it had only 1 big bearing and did not use a c-clip, need a sample of that to get it. The Mech seals and the other parts are easy to find. Let me know how many want to order the kits.

I'll take ten kits SnakeDoc that way I'll have spares for the guys here in the states - or I'll just send what I have left over to Wuputt since he will eventually be doing some rebuilds himself. That's great Blag - at least we know there is another source for this stuff - even if it is higher priced than what snake doc can get this stuff for. I'm going to continue looking here in the sates when I get caught up on some stuff.

Just so you know Snake doc, I have the pump with one bearing - problem is, it's not rebuildable - at least not by someone without some fancy machinery - the impeller shaft IS the inner race for that bearing, so once it comes apart, you can't put it back together unless you have some fancy machine - press maybe? - to do it with. My plan on those pumps is to modify it to use one or two individual, complete bearings in place of the one big bearing. But that's another project for another time.

Thanks again SnakeDoc. Later.

Snake - I need 2 sets of the 30mm kits.

thanks

Jarney - I saw that bearing set-up on one of the bearing web sites, sorry can't remember which one, but it was under "water pump bearings". Apparently, when the bearings wear out, you buy the complete shaft with the bearings already installed and press your impeller onto it. Prolly not cheap.

I guess Wuputt needs some of the mech seals that are 28.3 - 28.7, how many do you want? Are the bearings and the "ceramic face seals" the same size as the ones used on the 30mm mech seals?

All of those that want the complete kit, please send me a pm with what size you want. If you want just the mech seals, then send a pm of what size you want.

I'll clear my storage of PMs so there is no confusion from previous posts.

Thanks and glad I can help. Looks as if I'll have to get any money sent to Chris as I don't have an PayPal account yet. (long story) I'll have to check with Chris first though.

I'll take 5 sets Chris, I hold them here for any european guys that may need them in the future.

5 Mechanical seals,
10 bearings,
5 Lip seals.

I have plenty of the other stuff (O rings and circlips)

Let me know how we can get advance payment to you as soon as we can.

PM sent.

Thanks,

Kev
