What's fastest? Lets see how long..

I think the list of bikes for this event is currently, at least in my mind...

1. kawasaki ---zl9\10, kz
2. yamaha ----vmax, 1100 maxim
3 susuki-------madura
4. honda------v4's, magna, sabre

keep in mind if this event includes the kz crowd it will definately add alot of potential participants and vintage bikes however.....the kz has been the foundation of drag bikes forever, and if you want to huge power gains there are many, many, products available to the kz rider in current production, so these guys will be able to bring serious fire power to the event and it is very possible a kz would be the fastest bike.

aslo wondering if there should be a 600 &\or 750 class? this would also serve to include additional bikes and riders....

I'm thinking that some brain storming is necessary to clearly establish the guidlines for the event are in order....

including kz's will also open the event up to pre-1980 bikes...might be a good thing.... more cross-over appeal = more people

there are other really cool first generation crotch rockets, one example would be the fj1200, saw one on the street the other day...including these first gen. crotch rockets would again add crossover appeal and expand the event but it might change the atmosphere or characture of it.

somehow it seems as though the crotch rocket and the cruser crowd dont really hang together very often...maybe the event could begin to change that by way of the 80's (or earlier) vintage theme..

gentlemen..i wanted to ask if there are any other bikes from the 80 s muscle bike era ..that im forgetting about that would do battle with the v65 s and v max s and the zl s...the only other bikes that i can remember from that era are the kawasaki gpz s. and the kz s..as well as the fantastic honda cb 900 and cb 750...anyways with all this quarter mile talk,,i think ill try and run my zl 900 at some point,,carlsbad raceway was the track that i raced my zx9 at...ill have to see if its still open,,there is also pomona raceway which hosts the big guns a couple of times a year ,,you know like the winternationals..they may have a track day for people who want to take their cars and bikes and make some quarter mile runs,,,,do you guys lower your rear tire pressure when you drag race...?,,i remember doing that when i was dragging the zx9,,,if so,,,what pressure would you recomend ??,,,anyways hope all you cats are doing ok,,im still very much enjoying this site,,,brett
There are very few other cruisers out there that could qualify for the 80's power cruiser. Suzuki Madura, and Kawasaki ZN1100 LTD as well as some other KZ's with shaft drive,,spectre etc. Can't really think of honda's shafties...CB900?

I believe we are referring to power cruisers. There are 80's superbikes that will easily beat the ZL's. The Honda cb900F is NOT one of them, although Honda's cb1100 will. The Honda cbx just edges it out but they are a ***** to tune and most of them out there won't. Yes, the 80's suzuki GS1100,1150 and gsxr1100 will, Yamaha FJ1100 & 1200 will, Vmax of course. kawasaki's own 1000R & zx10 will , although I think the gpz1100 is very close. There may be one or 2 more but thats it.

Think its best we see who all is interested in coming and not worry as much about classes or size. Keep it more of an informal meet and we can pick and choose the need for who runs who and why when we get there over a breakfastor coffee.
More of an informal street gathering just at the track instead of the street if you will. :nike:

Texas tornado is right. I also believe nobody can get a stock ZL anything into the 10's. Its a matter of breathing and gearing. The ZL's do not have the cams, carbs, valve size, drive configuration or even the cc's to accomplish this. In the Kawasaki tradition, that still holds true today, they were engineered to act bigger than they were. Great stoplight street performers, they are limited in their big end performance by the same features that make them the ultimate holeshot kings.I also have owned a slew of big liter bikes, and like the 86 1000R ninja (who's base engine is very similar to the ZL1000) who could with the larger cams, carbs and chin drive could muster a 10.6 quarter mile, the bigger Vmax and even the V65 could (and has) visited the 10 second zone more than once with the right rider. BTW, I have always been a fan of Jay Gleason, who btw has always weighed 130 lbs. 100 of those pounds are pure balls, I might add. In my 25 year collection of cycle magazines, he also makes mention of the "cheat techiques" of fork strapping, tire shaving and dyno tuning of the bike manufacturers prior to the shoot-out articles. Its all about selling bikes! I've beaten a gsxr600 more than once on my zl900 and once on a friends VR750. Both that on paper should have been 1/2 a second slower than the gixxer. Go figure. Like Paulfun mentioned, its the track timeslips and REAL stoplight acceleration runs that talk the talk. Th-th-thats all folks!

Prostreet...educate me on the terms "fork strapping" and "tire shaving". I've never heard of those terms before. Thanks for the enlightment; much appreciated.

SO CAL ZL

i believe fork strapping is using tie downs to compress the forks all the way down so there is no travel,,,this way the back tire gets the power down quicker..there is no upward fork travel to delay foward motion,,,my friend does this all the time on his hyabusa...and yes i dont believe either a v65 stock or a stock zl 1ooo or 900 can get in the 10 s...i had a stock zx9 that i did 10.97 at the drags and that bike was stock and dyno ed at 127 hp at the back wheel...the zl 900 is a very quick bike,,,when you consider that back in the 80 s 100 rear wheel horse power was rare...i believe that the zl 900 was rated at 101 hp im not sure if thats rear wheel or at the crank,,,and to tell you the truth ., im ok with whatever my zl does in the quarter mile,,,it just a really ****ing fast bike..its fun to ride and it looks as good as anything thats coming out from the big four in the cruiser arena...i have to tell you guys ..im having a blast riding this beast...so who gives a care about the quarter mile...my hyabusa is so ****ing fast,,,it goes from 70 to 150 before you can recall what your name is..,,,lol...you want to accelerate...by a gsxr 1300 or a zx 1400..

F1nxlife;

You dont understand!! You west coasters can ride now and our season is over! All we have left is our bench racing till spring!

F1nxlife is partially correct. The forks are compressed and held down with nylon straps. This prevents them from pulling up and actually leaves the weight on the front to prevent wheelstands during hard launches and shifting. The bike just goes foward...very fast. And as he said, is still done today for a maximum acceleration Tire shaving is when they "shave " or cut down the surface of the rear tire to almost no tread. This allows it to act like a slick while still being recognized as a "stock" oem tire.

i hear you paul...i feel for you guys in the colder states..but you know were all brothers,,if you ride,,your my brother,,only guys (and girls),,who ride can know the great feeling of freedom and fun,,,we have,,,,and bench racing is part of that..so keep it coming gentlemen,,im learning a lot on this site and i feel im starting to get to know some of you cats,,,hope you all have a great weekend,,brett

I think all you need is 2 class.Stock and modified. It should be more of a track day, than actual races. That should keep everyone happier, and getting along.I think "80's muscle bikes" covers what should be there.(jmo)

ENGLISHTOWN IT IS THEN! AT LEAST FOR US NORTH-EASTERNERS.
SORRY FOR THE BIG PRINT PAUL, ITS JUST EASIER FOR THESE EYES TO SEE.:help:

Walt I wont let the print bother me unless you are selling something on craigs list and use it in the e-mails concerning the sale! :rotf:

When the weather breaks we should do a run down this way as I belive numedia is about the same run for you as englishtown.
The advantage is that its about 23 min from my place a lot less crowded and we have the advantage of bringing some tools for tuning and tweaking not to mention a few beers/ fire pitt /steaks ect on the grill and no worry about having to do the trip back at the end of the day.
If not everyone could make the trip out west I'm sure some people from our side of the country could make it here.
two tracks close to me are http://www.numidiadragway.net/ and http://www.beaversprings.com/

I am not tryin to alter plans for the meet already in discussions just a get together for those of us who would want to do more than one and/or cant make the other.

SOUNDS LIKE A REALISTIC PLAN... WE MAY NEVER BE ABLE TO GET THE MAJORITY OF MEMBERS TOGETHER TO DO A MASS ASSEMBLY/RACE/PARTY, SO IF WE CAN GET A FEW GROUPS TOGETHER THAT CAN SHARE THE RESULTS OF THE RESPECTIVE MEETS, IT WOULD SERVE THE SAME PURPOSE AND BE EASIER. I REALLY DO WANT TO HUMBLE A COUPLE OF AUTHORITIES OUT THERE IN CYBERSPACE, HOWEVER!:pistols::pistols::pistols:

hey fellows....this ZL 900 is a ****ing blast to ride,,,,holy ****,,i had some fantastic launches today...some with the tire burning out at the light and some where the bike really hooked up,,,even against my friends R1,,,i was neck and neck for about 150 ft..i know theres been alot of talk about that v65,,its a great bike,,but i rode one,,,,and you just dont get that sick feeling of acceleration under your ass,,and with the exhaust note from kawis inline four,,its like an addictive rush...when i sold my zx9,,i thought i would never have a bike with such an intake (ram air of course) growl again..just like i thought the last girl was gonna be the best...wrong again hunny,,along comes the zl 900...the fix is in...i think im gonna buy another one....!!!!

Your friend on the r1 must be a good rider if he can launch with you and hold on from a dead stop like that. Most of the guys around here have to play catch up when I swing by the special sunday play stop and play.
The Zl will easily do 1.6's in the 60 ft as long as your whieght isnt too far outa line.
