ZL 1000 split into atoms: engine upgrade questions

Thats a very neat looking chain tensioner. :headbang::headbang:

Hope you measured everything so that you can post it up as a documented mod.:notworthy:

I see what you mean about the colour of the engine!
Have you got a piece of aluminium - an old / spare cover that you could spray and heat up until it cures?
You may not have to put it in the oven - it may be possible to heat it up with a heat source - like a hot air blower or gas torch with a diffuser on it?
What does it say on the can ? Does it need heat curing - if so, then how hot and how long?
Hope you can sort it without too much hassle.
Well done so far - it will be worth the effort when its all done.:notworthy:

The can just says, that if high resistance to chemicals is needed, then heat it up to 200 degress celcius, for half an hour, but it also says that this will normaly happen upon first usage.
Anyways im gonna try heating it up tomorrow, like you suggested, and see what happens, and if i have to paint it again, that wont be to much of a bother anyways.

Regarding the starter tensioner, i have taken alot of pics, so when its proved its worthiness, then ill write something up, no probs.

Altough baking the engine in the oven would be the ultimite dish :-)

Finally got my hands on a zrx 1100 head, but its missing the valve cover, so what can i use?, zzr 1100 cover ?? my zl 1000 cover, i havent recieved the head yet, so hard to know what fits.

Also got the engine painted again, looks great now, BLACK instead of turt brown:no-no-no:

Hello
You only can use a zrx valve cover, that's the only one that fits.
Nice jop ,keep on posting:hello2::hello2::hello2:

Just a little update.

Got the engine repainted, so now its finally matt black like it was meant to.

Sent a lot of parts to germany to be chromed, and was told it would take about 6 weeks :-( so proably a couple of months before im riding anywhere.

Had a friend of the family by, to have a look a the zrx 1100 head, and he said there were some pretty easy improvements to be made, so he´s gonna help me port the head, the guy has a dodge challenger with over 900 hp + gas, that he uses for drag racing, so he knows what he´s talking about, he also said that the headers were a real performance thief, so gonna be making a new stainless header when the engine is in the frame.

Nice to see the engine looking BLACK!
Nice job Rs - I think you are correct about the headers - they strabgle the motor rather than letting it breathe!
Let us know how you get on.:notworthy:

One head torn apart and ported, i had a friend help me , plus i had some pictures of the ZRXOA forum from a proffesional portjob for guidance.

The exhaust side was the most restrictive one, and has been opend quite "heavily" especially on the top side, where the exhaust gasses spend most of theyre time, cause they get pumped out, thats my understanding anyways, but im by no means an expert, was very happy to find the pictures from ZRXOA, the pictures here are from my head only, but they look very similar to the ones i found on ZRXOA, if not spot on :headbang:

Check out the cool brake and clucth covers i just recieved from Germany :laughing7:

Hello
The most restrictive are the very small exhaust tubes:no-no-no::no-no-no:
This is no use if you don,t change the complete exhaust
Mark and myself have custom made header .:hello2:
ZLRX:thumbsup:

Hello ZLRX, and thanks for the help you´ve been giving me via e-mail :headbang:

Im gonna be making a header myself, Have a look at post 48# , im just waiting for the pistons, so that i can reassemble the engine, and get it in the frame, and mock up the header.

What kind of tubing did you use for the header, 1mm?
Any other neat tricks worth mentioning?

Weeeee, finally recieved the pistons, so now i can get the block bored, and mill 1,4 mm off the top, cause the conrods are shorter on a ZL.

The head recieved the 3 P´s porting, polish and paint :hello2: just need some zx 11 cams and valvesprings, which i should recieve next week.

Got hold of some carbs from a ZRX 1200 cheap, with ivan´s needles and jetted for pods, so should be close enough to get it started atleast, still gonna need a dyno run though.

Also cleaned the inside off the glass on the tach, couldnt stand having a bike looking brand new, besides a dirty tach glass :nono: Followed the guide in the technical library, and its duable, but a pain in the ***

Kaboom, block milled and drilled.

Was a ***** to install the piston, glad i had a extra couple of hands on standby, i was even stupid enough to drop a pin clip in the crank case :violent1:, but luckily i got it out with a magnet:icon_dancefool:

Mmmmm, shiny. Where did you get the oil filler plug/temp guage? Cool. Later.

Hello
Nice engine ,you are doing a good job.:hello2::hello2::hello2:
I have a set of new wiseco pisons here but i don't know if i should install them or use them for building a turbo set up.
Without turbo in your setup with good exhaust you have about 140 wheel HP,that is +/- 160 crank hp.
With turbo is that about 230 hp :devil:in the setup I will make, but that is something to do in the winter.
Some small tipps make the exhaust long voor the best top end power and use the right jetting ,If you have a Dynojet kit 132 main and 3de clip from above and mixture screw 2,5 turns out
If you have Factory pro use 142 mains.
Thats very close to the best set up but always make a dynojet run.

Later ZLRX

Hey Jarney i bought mine from ebay.de but maybe you can find something simular in the states?

http://cgi.ebay.de/RR-Oltemperatur-...14&_trkparms=72:1229|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

Hey ZLRX, a turbo setup does sound wicked, would that be with carbs or injection? 230 hp, you better hold on :headbang:.
Have you ever made a 1/4 mile run with your current setup? cause when watchinng your video on youtube, one can help but think that it will be a pretty good time :pistols:

Finally recieved a zzr 1100 head ( zx 1100 ) so i could grab the cams and dual valvesprings from it.
So got that sorted out, and finally got the engine in the frame. :headbang:

As you can see from one the pictures, im gonna have to move the coils, simply aint enough room to get the spark boots in.
