ZL 1000 split into atoms: engine upgrade questions

Hello
The sparkplugboots fit very tide, but they fit:nike::nike::nike:
I changed the place of the coils to behind the carbs against the frame, but you can use stick coils also.
Very nice work :hello2::hello2::hello2::hello2::hello2::hello2::hello2:

Might go with stick coils, not sure yet, whatever i decide the coils need to be moved, maybe i could get the plugs in, but i dont think its possible to get the head cover off.

Who makes stick coils for the zrx 1100 ( or zx 11 ) ?? saw them over at ZRXOA, but would cost me an arm and a leg to get them from the states, due to customs and postage.

Theoriginal zrx bootsfit and you don't have to get the valve cover off
You can also use zx10r coils or other stick coils from a honda or suzuki
Just look at the zrxoa site for the part numbers:hello2::hello2::hello2:

Did anyone find a shorter stick coil that will fit the ZL head?
The ones that work on the ZRX appear to be too long for a ZL?

Hi Vinny, I have searched a bit, but doens´t seem like anything has been made that will fit the zl, and yep the ZRX´s ones are quite a bit longer.

Cheers RS2000 - I will keep a look out to see what turns up - you never know!

Really pleased to see the great work you are having done to your ZL - will be a real smart bike when you get her done.:notworthy:

Got the downtubes for the header made up, so now i need to make the next bend and join the tubes at each side below the engine, if all goes well, i should be finished next weekend.

As you can see from the pictures, the forward controls dont make the job any easier, cause they replace the stock front engine mounts, and make things even more cramped than they already are, but i just love em to much, to let em go, kind of adds to the sleeper image, and might get even more crouch rockets to take the bait :headbang:

Looking godd RS.:headbang:

Did you manage to get a bigger Internal diameter tube than standard?
Those outside bends look awkward - did you make them yourself or can you get them off the shelf?

That will be a big suprise to a lot of Crotch Rockets.
Don't smoke them too badly the first time - and you will get to smoke them again!:headbang:

Thanks, the tube i used is 38,4 mm ID and is 2 mm thick, kind a on the heavy side, but i got it free from work :-)

The stock header is 32,5 mm ID but on cylinder 1 and 4 its only 28 mm to begin with, cause of the bends that clear the frame.

I made everything myself, from cutting up 90 degre bends, in the same size, as the tube im using, pretty time consuming, cause your constantly going like this,

cut
grind
check
grind
check
tack, and repeat a different place :-)

:hello2: got the header finished :headbang: just needs to be welded, and wraped.

Only thing i need to decide regarding the exhaust now, is what cans to use, right now im tempted to try modifying the stock ones, im thinking about opening them up, and changing the inlet angle, and just generally try to get more flow in them.

Things are starting to come together, and 4-6 weeks from now i should be able to hit that sweet sweet start button,

Very nice work mate!:headbang:

It was certainly worth the effort - they should help to release them ponies you will be making with the engine mods!

Look out crotch rockets theres a real nasty sleeper hunting you down.:rotf:

Very cool. So when's the mass production start? Hahaha, just kidding. Later.

Yeah yeah guys, i hear you, and the one who buys me CNC mandrel bender, and ships it to little Denmark, will get a header free of charge :headbang:
But seriously, if you have a grinder, and can borrow a tig welder for a weekend, to tack things up, its not as bad as it looks, main thing is patience, plus i could measure some of the bends, and then you could have some of the tubes bended, and there would be even less guess work, just remember that when youre finished, the tubes need to be welded with gas inside the tube, cause they might crack otherwise, plus its 10 times easier with gas inside the tube, probably be small bucks, if you took it to a shop, and have them do it, cause it doens´t take that long when everything is ready.

:nike:

Finally got finished with the header, even got the original bottom heat shields back on, and made two new upper ones.
I wrapped the header, to help with any potential heat problems, and as a bonus, no need for polishing :hello2:.

Also got my things back from the painter, and got everything put back together, but ran in to a problem with the petcock, simply wasnt any room for it, due to different inlet rubbers from the zrx 1100, so had to make a bracket that moved the petcock forward 15 mm, still tight as hell, but atleast now the hose has about 2 mm of air down to the carb, not alot, but cant think of anything else to do.

Looking Good Peter! You getting it dyno'd?

I wonder if the offset pingel adapter would do the trick for the fuel tap?

Hello
Lookin very good nice jop to be proud of:headbang:
The only thing of concern is the cooling
I have a oilcooler and a (bigger) zzr1100 radiator
I think the original radiator can handle it but in extreme conditions it is to small
A oilcooler is not that difficult just use a bellypan of a gpz1000 (zx1000) and the oilcooler also .It is a easy swap you oly have to make a braket for the oilcooler.
The exhaust wrap is also not a good way to get rite of some heat.:no-no-no:
Hope these tips help you to make the ultimate bike

Thanks :-) definatly getting it dyno´d , cant wait :headbang:

In regards to the pingel adapter, im gonna try the way it is first, and see if there´s enough clearance, so hoping it wont become an issue, but if it does, then the adapter is definatly worth a look, or maybe a different petcock.
