Hey guys in currently have my ZL 1000 torn down to the frame as im doing a complete renovation, with new painting and all, my goal is to get it looking almost like a new bike, but more to the custom side, with lots of chrome and custom paint work, but easy recognisable as a zl 1000.

As im also doing the engine aswell, i thought i might beef it up, so i have my mind set up on putting some zzr 1100 barrels in it, along with a zrx head, and zzr 1100 cams and springs, just like ZLRX has done to his bike.

To make it even more mean, i have also thought about buying a big bore kit for those barrels, which would be a wiseco kit with 2 mm overbore, giving it 1109 cc and a 12:1 compression, but will the rest of the engine stand up to that or am i going over the top ?.

As far as ZRX head, would there be any point in having that ported, or is it good as it is ?.

A lot depends on your wallet?
If you can afford it - it will help, BUT it would be more beneficial - in my opinion - to get some new headers made witha slightly bigger ID - to allow the motor to breathe better. Junking the collector box and putting some Holeshots on would also improve breathing.:headbang:

The number one thing that these motors need (according to Dale Walker of Holeshot Performance) is to be kept cool and to breathe...You (of course) can never go wrong with more diplacement, but, remember, you are talking about alot of cash to do overbore kits and port and polish jobs, but if you can afford it, I say go for it.
Good luck and keep us posted!
moab...

Im definatly gonna get some other cans, and holeshot are the best looking ive found so far, so im pretty settled on them, in regards to cost, im by no means rich, so yeeah id like to keep the cost as low as possible, but if someone told me that the zrx head is badly designed from the start, and that a port job would work wonders, and give 10 extra horses, then there´s some value for my money, so to speak.

My biggest concern so far, are regarding reliability.

Thanks for the link :-)

I´ve just bought zzr 1100 barrels for the project, they were without pistons, so i guess that kind a forces me to buy a big bore kit :-)

Nice idea about the headers, and i could probably pull it off making them myself, but i think im gonna try first, with the original headers, and holeshot mufflers, i could always swap later, with the engine in the frame, right now im kinda pressed for time, since riding season is only a couple off months away.

I may have a falicon crank and NOS con rods around here somewhere.

Sounds interesting MachIV, pm me if you find them, and are willing to part with them.

Neither has been used, the crank was done and never installed.
It's for a Ninja 900 but it's the same.
We installed a complete ZRX 1100 motor when we realized the head was junk.

Hey rs2000,
I hope you realise that the 1100 barrells are not a straight plug in mod?
You will need to open up the diameter of the holes in the crankcases - so that the lower lip of the barrels will drop into the cases.
At the moment you will find that they foul by about 1mm or so.
This means that you will need to take a Dremmel o similar and enlarge the holes - or take the case to someone to bare out for you.
I hope that this doesnt dampen your enthusiasm - or chuck a spanner in the works for you.

I´ve read pretty much everything there is to read on the "project" and yep i know that the crank case holes need to be made bigger, and that the barrels need to have 1,4 machined off, to get the compression raised, due to conrods being a different lenght.

What still bothers me, is the reliability issue, ass far as i can tell, an engine with those specs, would put out atleast 150 hp, proably quite a bit more, and will the trans, clutch, shaft put up with that ???? for the clutch ive ordered some heavy duty springs, and im gonna try with the original disc´s first, but maybe ill have to order some kevlar disc´s, but thats something i can always do later on.

By the way Vinny, has your zzr 1100 barrels project, come to a dead stop ?????

You'll be pushing your luck with the shaft at around 150 HP.
I'd like to get $400 for the Falicon crank and rods.
All are new and unopened.

Hello
The relaibility is not a problem at all
The bearings and all the internals are the same as a zx11 and the make also 150bhp
Not to mention some guys put turbo's on a zrx and they make easely 220 bhp
I have made the mod 2 years ago and also for Markzl900
I already made at least 10000 miles on it and mark 4000 miles, without any problems.
You have to use zx1000 or zl1000 crank because of the stroke,
If you use zx10 (1988) connecting rods you don,t have to shave the cylindertop
It is not do difficult to make it :nike: :nike: :nike:
Change also the starter clutch and use one of a zrx or zx11 they are much stronger
If I can be any help let me know just mail me at [email protected]
:hello: ZLRX

MachIV: would shipment to denmark be a problem, and do you have any additional info on the crank and rods.

ZLRX: thats great news :headbang: were hoping that you saw the topic, and had some info, so thanks for that :-) and nice looking bike by the way.

Thanks for the link, but they are for zl 900 barrels, i need them for zzr 1100 barrels. Plus i have a zl 1000, so it would move me in the wrong direction, so to speak :-)

Shipping is no problem.
All the stuff is at a friends house in Fla.

MachIV: thinking about it, the zl 1000 has a different stroke than the zl 900, 55mm vs 58mm, so i cant really use the falcon crank for anything :-(

Yes rs2000 - I am dead stopped on the 1100 mod - at the moment - nearly finished building a small workshop out of breeze block. Needs a door and roof now.
This is after laying a new driveway at her house!
Every time I look like doing some of my jobs - she comes up with some project or other!
Never mind - it will happen!
Good luck with your mod - take lots of pictures and post them up.:headbang:
