ZL 1000 split into atoms: engine upgrade questions

Vinny: well thats the way of the world, or woman, you choose :-) and yep i am taking alot of pictures, was thinking about making a kind of HOW TO guide afterwards.

Kawboy: i´ve already gotten my hands on a cylinder, but thanks anyway.

recieved the fork brace today, **** its beatiful!!!!!!!!
Funy thing about ordering parts, recieving them is better than christmas eve.

Hey, didn't I tell ya Santa Claus was comin to town!

Cupid's just around the corner, get down to Victoria's Secret and buy some nice lingerie for the woman and dust off that sausage! Maybe she will make an allowance for you to spend that $130/$140 on a Fork Brace.

Double fork brace.... You dirty bastard

recieved the zzr 1100 barrels, and was wondering if you guys had any input on the following mod:

https://zrxoa.org/forums/showthread.php?t=164139&highlight=1109

seems like an easy way to gain some ponies :laughing7:

Another question: i currently have my engine completly split apart, and everything looks great, but i was wondering if there was any need to change things like, crank bearings , and the 4 big gearbox bearings, they appear to be in great condition, and are quite pricy ???

Yep im definetly doing the #3 journal oil mod and starter clutch.
But since its my first time splitting a bike engine apart, im not quite sure about the bearings, cause they look and feel almost new, so would be a sad waste of money, if someone with more experience told me, that those parts are often re-used

Hi RS,
I read the link - and thought it wouldn't be worth the hassle for maybe 1 bhp. Then saw that someone reckons you may get 5 bhp - that would seem worthwhile - the main thing would be smoothing the edges to stop any crack propogation.
How many miles has your motor done?
If not many then I would leave the bearings alone.
I dont recall anyone having bearing problems - unless they are related to no3 journal and oil. Even ZLRX and ZL900Mark - who have modded engines haven't done the bearings - as far as I know.
Hope that helps.

Yep 5 hp makes it worthwhile, but on the zl 1000 you also have to cut out the same shape in the crankcase, to make it work, but as far as i have read in the link, there doesnt seem to be any strenght issue, regading cutting into the crankcase, guess ill have to add it to the other 5000 things i have to do before im finished :hello2:

My engine has done 19000 miles, so thats not to bad, and considering that everything looks to be in great shape, i think im gonna leave the bearings alone.

Hi
If the bearing don,t look to bad just leave them.
I only changed the bearing from the 3the connecting rod just in case
If you change bearings from a connecting rod you also have to replace the bolts, because if you re-use them the can break and blow the hole engine (look at the manual):evil5:
For what about the cylinder mod I don,t think it will gain 5Hp :rotf:,I think +/- 1Hp . A pumpinglose of 5 hp on an 1100cc engine is unpossible.
Don,t forget to install the zx11 valvesprings because of the max rpm of a zl is 1000 higher.
I also used a 36mm zrx carb and ofcourse zx11 cams:headbang:

ZLRX

Thanks for the advice, still thinking about the mod.

ZLRX: i think im gonna try with 40mm carbs, since im also have the wiseco big bore kit in mine, so i think they could easily handle them without sacrificing midrange.

Update:

The bike is coming along slowly, but surely, been doing alot off polishing work the last couple off weeks, but finally got time for some engine work today, so i got the crankcase grinded up to accept the zzr 1100 barrels, and made the #3 oil journal mod, from the pictures you can see that although no damage has been done, the hole wasnt quite spot on with the bearing, so i grinded it sideways and a little deeper, plus i rounded the edge a little.

Pictures are a little bad, but to late to redo them.

Very nice job on the polishing!:headbang:

The grinding looks very neat - what did you use - a Dremmel or similar?
Looks like its coming together - dont worry about how long its taking - as long as its done right - it will only need doing once.
Very impressive work.:notworthy:
- may make me jeleaous enough to go out into the garage.?

I used what you can see in the pictures, just remember to start out with something like grain 60 or less to get you started, you can always use something smoother later on to get that "neat" look.

But basically you can use just about anything to do it.

Update: got the engine painted, and made a new starter chain tensioner.

I painted the engine, with some heat resistant matt black paint, from a can spray, right now it doesnt look near that, it looks like kind of a semi-gloos dark brown, its naggin the **** out of me, but i can feel that the paint hasnt dryed completly yet, and it says on the can that the paint doenst completly drye, until its been heated, so im seriusly thinking about putting my engine in the oven, cause im sure as hell, aint gonna be driving around with a brown engine.

Before i painted the engine, i tried the paint on some cardboard, and that turned out matt black like it was suppose to???

It's weird that black paint came out brown like that.
