ZL1000's kick ZL900's Ass !!

The zl1000 is sooooo much more comfortable to ride. The seat is sooo nice and cushy and holds you firmly in place. The handlebars have a nice rise to take some weight off your wrists. I could easily ride this bike like I do my Venture, it's a nice, nice bike to ride. Part throttle cruising and low end grunt are impressive and more plentiful than on the zl900.

:yeahthat:

The verdict:
The zl1000 has more streetable power, but the zl900 won't have a problem showing it who's boss.

Thanks, Mark.....

I do NOT have a stock ZL900, but I have ridden a stocker back-to-back with mine, and I have to say, I will line up against even a V-Max with NO worries, much the less a ZL1000, then when I read Mark's post, I see that all of us 900 riders may very well be vindicated, I agree that these are great bikes, and no matter what your taste, be it the brash in your face style of the ORIGINAL ZL the 900, or the much more refined, layed-back style of the FOLLOW UP 1000, just know that you are sitting on a piece of history, ride on, my brothers, ride on...

moab...

ps, I had a co-worker ask me today if I would trade my 900 for a Harley, and I replied....

"I would be willing to trade my bike for a bucket of hog piss long before I would trade it for a Hog"

marks post wont vindicate the zl900's

vindication will require an 11.7 or better... post up them time slips boys !

I like how bacchus waited until he knew our dragstrips were closed then started all the smack talk! He needed the winter season to help keep him on the throne as long as possible :stir:

I am the snow king ! ...lol

youv'e uncovered by secret stratigy... drat that zlmark !!! .............lol

I am looking forward to the spring, and all the zl's that will be taking the challange!!

I think that all my poking at you guys will make for an interesting season of zl drag racing !!!!!!!!!

who will the new king be???
post up if you think you've got what it takes to de-throne king Bacchus!!

I hope, for your sake, that someone takes my place this season. Otherwise I will have to torment you all for another winter.....

MWAAA HAA HAA HAA HAA ! (evil laugh)

I have to see if I even have a drag strip close to me, and if there is, when I can go and run this thing down said strip....Then we shall see.....
moab...

Listen guys, I don't own one yet(2 days and counting) but I just read alot this week about them and from what I read the ZL1000 is the MASTER of the roll on acceleration, but according to what I read, the 900 is quicker, 1/4 mile wise. I used to ride with a guy that had both and the 900 was worked to hilt, ie smooth bores, D&D, cams and he could hang with my Gixer 1100 from a dead stop (if I could keep my front wheel down). When it's all said and done, does it really matter, we own a piece of motorcycle history that will NEVER be duplicated! I can't wait to start riding again (after 12 years without a bike) and hopefully meeting ALOT of you!

That would be ZLMark....Our exalted cult leader. The Jim Jones of Ohio.

Faster or not, the original is a more aggresive & better looking bike my humble opinion.
i agree, but after riding with wuputt, & seeing furchin's 1k, & mark's 1k, i have a new found respect for the 1k. i may look into finding one someday, but for now, i'm going to keep my eye out for more zl900's. CHRIS

I was first fascinated by the ZL1000, had to have one! Then I had to have a ZL900! I know they can both kick a Hardly butt that cost as much as a motor home!

My brother has an 02 softail deuce. It's a beautiful bike. Last year he put in a 6 speed tranny for $3000. Last summer (when he thought his Harley was fast) we were lined up at a stop light and he wanted to race. I totally left him in my dust. This winter he sunk another $4000 in engine mod's to get some performance out of it. heh-heh-heh. I can't wait till spring! I don't care what you ride, just shut up and ride!

looks like I will be getting to go to the track on saturday night.... got a time to beat.. wish me luck !!

Ill try to get some pictures or video to post.

Bacchus, you got a Vmax and the two eliminators, how do you compare them? I had friends with both in the past and both had work done, but they never raced eachother. Just wondering if I should bother when I get mine dialed in.

THanks,

my vmax is my current project bike. It is now on the bike stand all torn down. I am having some parts chromed, some painted and others replaced and or modified.

As far as racing them I havnt yet put the vmax on the track so I do not have my own numbers to compare. I have seen numbers from the net and it definately appears as though the vmax can perform as well as mid tens but that is net knowledge and not necessarily to be trusted. I expect the max to outperform the zl, but what is not certain is by how much. when I first got the max in stock form my initial impression was that the power factor was very similar to my ZL but, I did not have any real good opportunities to open her up. Personally these are two bikes of the same breed if you ask me.......
stop light destroyers...launch rockets.....muscle bike...power crusers.... monsters

as far as the question about wether or not you should bother to race one, I would say definately yes. dont bet your pink slip though. the bottom line is that the vmax has an advantage in horse power, but not so much so that it will make up for serious driver error. If your opponent does not run a good clean run, and you do... the race will probably go to your zl. Driver error does and will occur. all that you need to win is mr. max getting a little too much wheel spin off the line and there will be no catching you. Belive me mr. max will be cursing himself when you smoke 'em. ...lol

the additional hp the max has just means that the rider will need to handle the launch that much more carefully. the zl's on the other hand launch great !! not too much wheel spin, not too much wheelie, just a nice KA POW off the line. launch at 2500 rpm and your off the line like a pro every time. This is the primary reason the zl's smash these newer crothch rockets off the line consistantly. the other rider is got alot on his mind trying to keep the front end down and the rear end sticky. while they are trying to manage getting off the line ....

I'M Gone ! ZL say Bye Bye !!!...lol ... catch me if you can !!

just got back from speedworld. only 4 runs tonight. sorry to say my best tonight was a 12.0 @110 . still fun as hell !!!

we aren't open yet,, ground still to soft for parking....bummer. My plan is to try and run the zl900, probably blow a shift fork out the side of the case when it pops out of 4th

dont blow that up... you may need it for r&d purposes......

anybody out there have any thoughts on shift points??? how bout launch rpms???

Im still trying to best my maiden voyage down the 1/4 mile. It must be done !! Ive now run 18 runs and the first was the fastest. that is frustrating because my first run I was more concerned with not wrecking than really pushing for max velocity.

I also need to get my brain around on site tuning any suggestions from the group would be great. I think that some fine tuning may have been neccessary because I was running a little slower consistantly, therefore probably not driver error.

Ive got an 11.865 , now its time for maybe an 11.6 would be nice !! Im not greedy, I dont expect to hit an 11.13 but a nice flat 11.6 would make me happy at this point. 12's are out, no more of those are neccessary!!

I got to run with a gsxr 600 one race.... smoked him off the line and all the way home. one gxr blowed the f*** up !

I also raced a heavily modified zx12r ninja with an extended swingarm. this guy was running in the nines. first run.... blew him the f*** up...lol.... he got some rear wheel spin and my zl was gooooooooonnne! raced him twice after that as well. rider told me he dyno'd at 175hp, thats all Ill say about that.

I aired up my rear shocks to 21 psi seemed to help keep the front end down but hard to tell because my launch and launch times were slower than last time out. maybe driver error was a factor. I dont think I was releasing the clutch agressively enough.

anyways, a sh**load of fun.... who is next?????
