ZL1000's kick ZL900's Ass !!

Unless your bike is lowered 21lbs of air is too much! You are not getting the front tire to float that way and the zl likes to have that tire just floating.

you new slower speed and et proves that.

As well did you ever get the carbs figured out if sightly lean you will run slower till she gets up in the high rpms

isnt the benifit of lowering the rear end to reduce/eliminate wheel spin???

wheel spin has not been a problem with the 170 bridgestone s11 tires Im running. Im thinking the additional width has got that under control. I was trying to reduce front wheel lift at launch. seemed to work, but like I said, I wasnt launching as hard as before. also want the rear end to be as firm as possible so that energy is effectively transfered to rear wheel and not absorbed by suspension. dont know if I was thinking correctly but that is what I was thinking with the setup. all input on this is appreciated.

seems like if the best runs are between 11.13 and 11.4 a "good" rider should be able to consistantly hit 11.6 or thereabouts.... this is my mission, and I chose to accept...lol

tire pressure was at about 35 psi. again my thinking is that lowering the tire pressure helps to insure that there is no wheel spin. not a problem. lower rear tire pressure will make it more sticky at launch but increase rolling resistance and possibly reduce top speed, or at least that is my thinking. In fact I was considering raising the tire pressure my next time out to max rated for the tire of 41psi and see how she sticks. if Im sticking good is there a benifit to lower tire pressure???

I am also considering this to help to improve my top end speed. best at this piont is just under 113 mph. should be at 117 mph for an great run.

as far as the carbs I re-adjusted the pilot screws. I have talked to wickedzl about his carb service and I will probably have this done coming up here soon. noticed a little more bluing on the down pipes, not alot, but a little, so im thinking with the zl9 mufflers on her she is a tad lean. this as well would not help shave time

Lowering the front end will also reduce your profile and hence drag!

I would also be looking at reducing weight wherever possible - indicators / mirrors / rear footpegs and anthing else you can do without at the strip!

I pulled off the mirriors and fork bag, but I need the rear foot peg bracket to hold the mufflers in place. not much I can pull without realy tearing stuff down. Also, will a few pounds realy reduce the time by much??? im thinking we may be talking hundreths or less. I am after tenths of a second. When I am trying to beat a 11.5 Ill think about it, but for now I belive that I need to look for tenths and a few pounds off wont do that.

thanks for your input.... maybe there is something else that can go easily...

as far as the shocks go If I realy want her to squat I could just leave the progressives on, they are softer initially and will definately squat !

she may squat while lining up,& you sitting on her, but remember this, she is shaft driven, & shaft driven bikes do not squat under hard acceleration ! the back of the bike actually raises up. CHRIS

if you want her to squat during launch to shift the weight to rear wheel, the only thing i would suggest is pulling shocks off, & putting struts on. this would keep the tail section of bike from raising up, & shifting the weight forward. CHRIS

struts would work... but ... Im after max streetable power, wont be ridin' around with struts on her.. so.. I dunno .. the rear end sticks gooood and is stable, no wheels spin .. good suggestion

Try 8lbs of air in the shocks on #4 setting
drop forks in tripple clamps 1 inch
launch her hard and get the front end to float

hey chris,

when I first installed my progressive shocks I went for a ride with elimax and the first time I got on her hard I **** near tore off my license plate wich is located under tail light assembly. In order for this to happen she would have had to squat down in the rear. Im not following the lift due to shaft drive .... please explain further if possible

BACCHUS,

when you took off at that time, you must have launched very hard, & lifted the front a little. maybe not enough to bring the front wheel up, but enough to extend the front forks, causing the weight to shift to back & compressing the aftermarket shocks. i'm not an expert on this, but everytime i launch, or dad launches, you can actually see the rear shocks extend just a little, & see the space between the top of rear tire, & bottom of rear fender get bigger, instead of squatting down. to test this therory, i launched my cb900c( soon to be lowlife's new toy) also shaft drive, & it raised up too . also tested carl's zn1100 ( shaft drive) & it raised up ! so, that is where i get this from. i could be wrong with your progressive shocks, but i know all of them here raise up upon hard acceleration with stock shocks. it is truely a cool thing to see ! i have never seen a chain driven bike raise up like this. have someone watch you as your under hard acceleration, & see ! CHRIS

Shaft jacking,, my zl900 does this real bad. Stiffen up the rear to help. The zl1000 has a higher cog and won't jack as bad

I thought it was funny. Everyone knows that the zl900 is the original "Eliminator" and the 87 zl1000 wasn't worthy of the shiny chrome decals us zl900 owners all have. Kawasaki Krazy was just stating facts that he knows since he is "Kawasaki Krazy" and a "zl1000" owner.
:stir:

What the hell happened here?
