i tried clearing my vent tube also, but still rattles ! i've grown used to it, & with my exaust being so loud, i don't hear it all the time, & i'm thinking on investing in a good set of ear plugs. CHRIS

My "new" ZL900 buzzes like crazy! The higher I rev the worse it is.
It's almost loud enough to hear over the iPod!
If I put my hand on it and apply even a slight bit of pressure it stops, so I'm positive it's the cap assembly.
What's the deal with the vent tube? You guys blow compressed air INTO the tank?

I had it from the gas cap and the dash lights inside the headlight put some soft rubber under the gas cap and weather stripping around the housing for the bulbs inside the head light . then the license plate rattled so I put some weather stripping on that ... seems like it work for now ...

When you do blow out the vent, just remember that some trash might get into the gas.

See, I was wondering about that & it did worry me some.
Would it be better to use some carb cleaner in hope of, at least, dissolving some of the crap? I cleaned the screen on the petcock when I got the tank... what kind of gunk should I expect?

Ok I hope this pic helps you out and when I cleaned the vent on my tank I used a pipe cleaner ( wire ) and carb cleaner and air and got all kinds of **** out of that tube.
My gascap rattled, till I shoved a peice of carpet underlay between the cap and the tank. I trimmed it as best as I could but it still was't the prettiest. When I get her running again I want to look at redoing the rubber lining of the tank cap. I had been wondering if it wasn't just the fact that the rubber was really old and had shrunk and hardened on me.Definately came from the gas cap cuase when I put a hand on it it stopped right away

I have the dreaded gas cap rattle...My temporary solution is that I fold up a piece of paper towel at the gas station to give me a nice tight fit between the cover and the tank...Works for now, but looks like a$$.....So here is what I am gonna try...
Since the cover (at least mine...it is chrome) is just a tin housing, it is very flimsy and light...I am going to use one of two things...Either buy some weather stripping or some kind of adhesive foam rubber stuff and I am going to line the whole underside of the cover with it....What you want to do is add mass to the cover and use something that is gonna disperse the vibration frequency...If you have a buddy into car stereo stuff, he/she may have some "dynamat" laying around for you to use too...In cars, you get vibration from bass frequencies that make rattles...They use "dynamat" material to cover panels. That adds mass to the panel and gets it to stop vibrating or it slows it down to make it inaudible....If you can build it up with foam underneath, even to the point of the foam pressing gently against the tank when you close it up, you will stop the vibration......At least this is what I am gonna try....

the rubber I used is like dynamat, I had it left over from one of the cars I did I get it at a hardware store it's for roofing . worked real good on the license plate's also , it has an adhesive on one side of it .
I had 3,000 watts in my car pushing fifteen speakers, so it was a little but of work getting all the rattles out.

That's cool....I bought some stuff from a Lowes store...it is the water/ice roofing stuff....Putting in the back of my truck...It is a work in progress..

I might have missed it but my noise is not gas cap. zlMark said somthing about the fan. Does anyone else get the noise from this and how is it fixed.
Some of my rattle comes from the headlight bezzle - I'll have to look into that this winter. I can reach up and put my hand on it and it quiets down. Later.

One thing you could try would be to eliminate all the external noise possibilities by placing a hand all over the standard noise makers on bikes and see if anywhere it stops. Brackets (headlight, turn signals etc.), bolt-down sections, seat, gauges, gas tank flap etc.
