New Tools

You should be able to find one for <$20 on the used market. The typewriter style has some features that look cool but may not ever be used. I like that it makes for some big text, tape comes in clear, black or white which reminds me to write tape cartridges on the needed office supply list.

Damn I need to do this. I already have a handheld labeler that I grabbed on sale for I think around $20. It was a screaming deal, but there are cheap labelers out there. I keep putting this project off because I keep changing my mind what should go where. RJ: Thanks for posting up what works for you as it may help me figure out how to organize my "stuff." God knows I have a whole LOT of stuff.

:hello: I always get tired of opening sometimes up to 20 drawers to find a tool. It's not as bad as when I first loaded up 4 rollaways. Now I pretty much know where things are. I'm still going to finish labeling all the draws soon so I hope. :laughing7:.

:hello: I bought a new BOSCH Professional laser level ($450) model # GLL3-300 from LOWES. It operates on 4 double A batteries. It has a diameter range of 300 FT. 20220812_090336[1].jpg 20220812_090658[1].jpg 20220812_090523[1].jpg 20220812_092920[1].jpg 20220812_091321[1].jpg

I got one, but don't use it much. It's quicker to drive a small nail or two, stretch out a chalk line with a line level on it. I like gadgets, but the only time this is even slightly useful to me is for hanging kitchen cabinets, but it's still faster using the chalk line and nail method. Sometimes the old way is the best way.

Well, I wouldn't say useless, just not 100% accurate. I have a couple big balls of foundation twine. If you pull it tight it will be accurate enough. Actually for what you're doing you coulda got by with a laser pointer. I'm at the point now that I'm not buying any tools that are only going to be used once in a blue moon. Cost aside, they just start piling up on you. I got my laser tool for free actually. Abandoned on the job. Guess the last guy didn't find it all that valuable either.

:hello: I have laser pointers, laser sights and laser measures. They can not be leveled accurately over long ranges. My BOASH is self leveling and is accurate to +/- 3/32 of an inch. I bought this MAKITA laser measure a few years ago. It measure out to 250 ft. It measure in inches, feet and yards fraction or decimal. It also measures in metric. 20220813_125814[1].jpg 20220813_125935[1].jpg 20220813_125855[1].jpg

24" bar. Needed a bit more for some of these oaks/cherry. My Stihl 180 will be the limber saw now instead of beating on it to make a couple of cords. I have plenty of ash or something that gums the heck out of my chain. My back aches just looking at the saw and pile of wood that should have been split a couple of months ago. We will see how she runs soon, 3 qts of fuel took the warranty to 4yrs and hopefully will not need to work on it for a loooong time. Went Husky because I love my backpack blower and the small Stihl saw just is what it is.

Looks like a nice'n for sure. I got a Craftsman 18" for Xmas last year. It's built by one of the well known manufacturers but the brand escapes me right now. Stihl maybe. Does a nice job, but I've only used it a couple times.

My 16" ms180 just is too small to handle the oaks on the property. It will make a good limber but I think the husky will be the go to from here on out

:hello: I bought a STIHL 250 with an 18 inch bar. I've had it for 10 years or so. My first STIHL lasted me 26 years. The motor locked up because I forgot to add oil to the fuel. My Dad had one from 1972 to 1983.

There are reports of shortcomings (I take the reports with a grain of salt, many issues could be user error) for both the big names with this class saw. You sure can find yourself going down a rabbit hole researching saws. I'll probably go through the book and pull the string on it this evening. There are fanboys just like Ford/Chevy, I purchased from a place with a good service department and the guy said there were no real difference in numbers of a specific brand coming in for repairs.

:hello: I also owned Homelite, McCacculloch and Poulan chainsaws before I bought my STIHL. None of them made it two years. They Was all hard to start from day one. HUSQVANA and STIHL are the top two brands used by pros. I'd say they are both equal.

I have 3 McCullochs's from the 80's & early 90's. One power mach 310 16 inch bar, for trimming, two power macs 610's 18 inch and 20 inch bars, none which have had any major problems. And 1 Jonsered 670 champ from the 90's with 26 inch bar for big jobs. All have been good saws. Rumor has it that Jonsered was in the opposite side of the building that Husky was in for production.

I bought some premix fuel to extend the warranty, he told me never to use trufuel. He said use any brand but this:

He told me he was seeing equipment junked out while using it.

He said I may get addicted to the branded pre-mixed fuel. I will probably just keep using the Stihl oil and Ezero gas but the Ezero is $10/gal now so it's not that much cheaper.

Can only speak for myself, but suspect I've caused the majority of my chain saw woes myself by not promptly draining the tank and running dry after using. Seems like I'm always thinking I have a little more trimming to do so I put it away wet. Then months later I realize the damned thing is still full of gas and of course at that point it's running like poopoo again. I'm strongly considering adding SeaFoam to every can of gas I bring home. Seems like a fairly cheap way to avoid carb troubles.

The branded canned fuel has a 4yr shelf life and 2yr after opening it up. My backpack blower would cost too much for it but for the saws, it may fit the bill.

:hello:Sis years ago I quit using ethanol gas in all my lawn equipment, bikes and ATVs. About 35 years ago I started using AMSOIL Dominator racing oil. I get it at cost from our ACE Hardware $13 a qt. It cost less than the little bottles of STIHL oil. I use about two quarts a year. ____________________20221202_210415[1].jpg
