I thought others might be interested in seeing the rods.

Yeah, this sucks but hopefully it will make me a better mechanic - hahaha. This is what you get into with a motor that you don't know the history of. Here's what's crazy - I bought the bike which had sat for a couple of years or so - dry - no fluids - it had just been "assembled" to be sold (poorly assmbled mind you - bolts were loose/missing/not torqued, etc). Didn't run when I got it and I didn't know of the low compression/damage to the engine. I ended up getting it running and actually put about 500 miles on it - actually seemed to run pretty good, but that compression never came back on #2 and 3 - now I know why........so I tore it apart just thinking it would be rings or valves or something like that due to sitting dry for so long and here we are - 2 bent rods.........Here are some better pics of the rods. First 2 pics are #1 and 4 respectively - appear fairly straight but will be replaced anyway, last 2 pics are #2 and 3 respectively - #3 is bent worse than #2. Later.

yikes, number 3 is curved. But I like the way that you are approaching it, I am sure that it will make you a better mechanic and I bet that you will appreciate riding it even more when its back on the road.

So it's been raining cats and dogs around here for the past couple of weeks, I'm way behind on yard work, but managed to get out to the shop today and started tearing the 1000 back apart - again. Just need to remove the swingarm and it should be ready to pull the motor out. Ugh.....I'm dreading this.........Stay tuned - same zl time - same zl channel...........hahaha. Later.

Ok, motor is out, now to find time to tear it apart - hahaha. Later.

I bought mine a long time ago. Markus56 bought one more recently from the same place only his is black - I'm jealous........He can probably give the info you need - the place we got them from is here in Indiana - Indianapolis IIRC. I'll see if I can find my old info. Later.

Ok, here you go. I purchased mine in Oct. of '07 for $842.70. From a place called Greg Smith Equipment. Below is the link to their site and the model I purchased - prices have gone up. They have changed it a little too - mine is air or hydraulic operated, but this is the same model - HT1005. Later.

Ok, I now have a giant jigsaw puzzle - hahaha. Case is split.

Couple of questions:

1. Who's the a-hole that didn't label one of the bolts that has to come out in the gpz manual. Yeah, I know, I saw the bolt and thought it was strange but was trying to go by the manual and left it in. After repeated attempts with the cases not budging, I pulled that bolt out and the cases popped right apart - ugh........

2. What do I do now? Hahaha.

Later.

Hahaha, I knew that was coming........hahaha.

How hard would it be to swap out 6th gear in this for a little better gas mileage on the highway, while it's apart?

Later.

Talked to my mechanic today and he recommended either replacing all 4 con rods with new and having the crank checked by a machine shop or, since I have 2 busted up motors, pulling the con rods and crank out of one of those, having everything checked and swapping it all over as a set. So for now, and as time permits, I'm going to tear those 2 busted up motors all the way apart and have everything checked eventually and go from there. Later.

Ok, so after years of sitting, due to a variety of reasons, I finally am getting back to working on this bike a little. I got the motor back together finally and it actually runs - woohoo!!!! It will be a long slow process, but at least it's a start. I have some video to play with of putting it back together and I took pics every time I bolted something together - hahaha. It may take a while, but we'll see how this one turns out. Here's a few second video clip. Later.

Congratulations. More inspiration is exactly what I need. I am WAAAYY behind you as I just bought a soda blaster from harbor freight today. Started checking the wiring harness tonight...... How do you eat an elephant ?

The 1000's are cheaper since no one really wants them - hahahaha.

Eat an Elephant? Not sure I follow? Later.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah. I'm preserving the good bike - the 900 - that's why I'm always on the lesser 1000 - hahaha. Tell your painter to figure out that wineberry and I may eventually have some more work for him. I like the gray on this bike, but I think it may need some paint one day. Later.
